Limit analysis of a beam in bending immersed in an elastoplastic medium

1968

The behavior of the beam-soil system is examined within the scope of the bilateral schematization of ideal elastoplastic bodies, in the following work stages; the expression for the limit load is supplied for each stage: Two peculiar features of the problem are highlighted:1) the “plastic hinge migration” phenomenon, due to the elastic unloading of the material, and2) the successive propagation of plastification in the soil which, being related to the displacement of the hinges in the beam, leads to the identification of the collapse mechanism of the systme.

The interphase model applied to the analysis of masonry structures

2014

Abstract Masonry material presents a mechanical response strongly dependent on the static and kinematic phenomena occurring in the constituents and at their joints. At the mesoscopic level the interaction between the units is simulated by means of specific mechanical devices such as the zero thickness interface model where the contact tractions and the displacement discontinuities are the primary static and kinematic variables respectively. In many cases the joint response depends also on internal stresses and strains within the interface layer adjacent to the joint interfaces. The introduction of internal stresses and strains leads to the formulation of the interphase model, a sort of enha…

On the measurement of local gas hold-up, interfacial area and bubble size distribution in gas–liquid contactors via light sheet and image analysis: I…

2013

Abstract In this work a novel experimental technique for measuring local gas hold-up, interfacial area and bubble size distribution, in gas–liquid systems is proposed. The technique is based on advanced Image Processing coupled with experimental set-ups typically available for Particle Image Velocimetry. A fluorescent dye dissolved in the liquid phase allows to identify in-plane bubbles among all visible bubbles in the images. To this end, a suitable algorithm is proposed. The raw data so obtained are processed by previously developed statistical methods that result in a reliable reconstruction of actual dispersion properties. The technique is applied to the case of a gas-dispersed mechanic…

Kinetics of block-copolymer aggregation in super critical CO2

2002

Small angle X-ray and neutron scattering (SAXS and SANS) are used to obtain structural information on the aggregation behavior of block-copolymers dissolved in supercritical CO2. The SANS technique is used to provide a detailed structural model for the micellar aggregates, which form below the critical micellization density (CMD), that we defined in our previous work. The SAXS technique (with a synchrotron source) is used to provide the first experimental information concerning the kinetic features of both formation and decomposition of such aggregates as soon as pressure jumps are applied to the solutions across the CMD. 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. Two relaxation times and thermal nonlinear waves along wires with lateral heat exchange

2021

Abstract We propose a model for studying several nonlinear waves for heat transport along a cylindrical system with lateral non-linear heat transfer to the environment. We consider relaxational equations, each with its own relaxation time, for longitudinal heat transfer and for lateral heat transfer across the wall. We consider two kinds of nonlinear lateral heat transport: radiative heat transport, and flux-limited heat transport. This work generalizes our previous studies in which the relaxation time for the lateral heat transfer was considered equal to that of the longitudinal heat flux. We explore the influence of both relaxation times on the propagation speed of linear and nonlinear wa…

Wall collision and drug-carrier detachment in dry powder inhalers: Using DEM to devise a sub-scale model for CFD calculations

2018

Abstract In this work, the Discrete Element Method (DEM) is used to simulate the dispersion process of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (API) after a wall collision in dry powders inhaler used for lung delivery. Any fluid dynamic effects are neglected in this analysis at the moment. A three-dimensional model is implemented with one carrier particle (diameter 100 μm) and 882 drug particles (diameter 5 μm). The effect of the impact velocity (varied between 1 and 20 m s−1), angle of impact (between 5° and 90°) and the carrier rotation (±100,000 rad s−1) are investigated for both elastic and sticky walls. The dispersion process shows a preferential area of drug detachment located in the southe…

Experiments and predictions of the transition of the flow pattern with impeller clearance in stirred tanks

2001

In the present work, the double- to single-loop flow pattern transition in a stirred vessel equipped with a Rushton turbine is investigated by Laser Doppler anemometry (LDA). In particular, the clearance at which such transition occurs is assessed by comparing axial velocity profiles underneath the impeller. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations of the same system are carried out, by employing the 'inner-outer' fully predictive computation strategy. The comparison of predicted results with the experimental data collected shows that the transition is well reproduced by simulations. A good agreement on the mean velocities is also observed but for the impeller discharge stream angle t…

Determination of limiting current density and current efficiency in electrodialysis units

2018

Abstract A crucial parameter for the design and operation of electrodialysis (ED) units is the limiting current density (LCD). This is often identified with the diffusion-limited current density, which corresponds to the complete solute depletion in the layer adjacent to the membrane. Current-voltage curves obtained from measurements with electrodes in contact with the solution (i.e. without membranes) are consistent with this interpretation and exhibit a horizontal plateau identifying LCD. However, real ED systems show more complex behaviours, with a reduced-slope tract instead of a plateau and a third region in which the current increases more markedly (overlimiting current). The phenomen…

On the bubbling dynamics of binary mixtures of powders in 2D gas-solid fluidized beds

2012

Abstract The bubbling behavior of fluidized beds has been thoroughly investigated in the last decades by means of several techniques (e.g. X-ray, Inductance, Resistance and Impedance based techniques). In recent years, Digital Image Analysis Techniques have shown their potential for accurate and cost effective measurements. Most of the works related to the experimental analysis of bubble behavior in the field of gas-solid fluidization actually deal with monodispersed particles although almost all industrial equipments operate with mixtures of particles. Among the works available in literature dealing with mixtures of particles having different diameters and/or densities, most of them aim at…
