Condensation of classical optical waves

2010

We demonstrate the nonlinear condensation of classical optical waves. The condensation is observed directly, as a function of nonlinearity and wave kinetic energy, in a self-defocusing photorefractive crystal.

Evolution of an isolated monopole in a spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate

2016

We simulate the decay dynamics of an isolated monopole defect in the nematic vector of a spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate during the polar-to-ferromagnetic phase transition of the system. Importantly, the decay of the monopole occurs in the absence of external magnetic fields and is driven principally by the dynamical instability due to the ferromagnetic spin-exchange interactions. An initial isolated monopole is observed to relax into a polar-core spin vortex, thus demonstrating the spontaneous transformation of a point defect of the polar order parameter manifold to a line defect of the ferromagnetic manifold. We also investigate the dynamics of an isolated monopole pierced by a quantum vo…

Refrigeration bound of heat-producing cylinders by superfluid helium

2019

In this paper we go ahead in our studies on refrigeration of nanosystems by superfluid helium, as an appealing subject for future applications to computers or astronautical precision nanodevices. We first recall the effective thermal conductivity in laminar counterflow superfluid helium through arrays of mutually parallel cylinders and we discuss the conditions for the appearance of quantum turbulence around the heat-producing cylinders. We then consider the cooling of an array of heat-producing cylindrical nanosystems by means of superfluid-helium counterflow. We discuss the upper bound on heat removal set by avoidance of quantum turbulence and avoidance of phase transition to normal He I,…

Pairing in a three-component Fermi gas

2006

We consider pairing in a three-component gas of degenerate fermions. In particular, we solve the finite temperature mean-field theory of an interacting gas for a system where both interaction strengths and fermion masses can be unequal. At zero temperature we find a a possibility of a quantum phase transition between states associated with pairing between different pairs of fermions. On the other hand, finite temperature behavior of the three-component system reveals some qualitative differences from the two-component gas: for a range of parameters it is possible to have two different critical temperatures. The lower one corresponds to a transition between different pairing channels, while …

Beyond the dilute Bose gas

2006

Abstract We discuss problems of three dimensional Bose gases in interaction but non-dilute. We then use the theory of a “weakly interacting” Bose gas recently analyzed as an attempt to obtain further insights into non-dilute systems. In particular, we develop the theory with additional remarks, discussions and a slight modification. The article concludes with a much more detailed analysis of the Bose condensate depletion, as well as a study of the two-fluid model of Tisza and Landau: the coexistence of normal and superfluid liquids at sufficiently low temperatures. In fact, even if it is based on one debatable hypothesis, this non-dilute gas qualitatively leads, up to Landau's “ T 4 law”, t…

Supersolid Behavior of Light

2008

We will show how light can form stationary structures on dielectric periodic media such that their dynamics present simultaneous features of spatial long range order and superfluidity. This phenomenon is normally referred to as supersolidity.

Spatial dependence of the pairing field calculated with bare and induced interactions

2009

The interaction induced by the exchange of low-lying surface vibrations between pairs of orbitals close to the Fermi surface provides an important contribution to pairing correlations in superfluid nuclei. We study the spatial dependence of the pairing field obtained adding the bare and induced interaction in 120Sn.

Colloid-polymer mixtures between asymmetric walls: Evidence for an interface localization transition

2007

We demonstrate via computer simulation that mixtures of colloids and polymers confined to thin films have the ability to undergo an interface localization transition. While one wall of the film is assumed to be hard for both particles, at the other wall, an additional repulsive potential acts, but on the colloids only. By varying the strength of this repulsion, a crossover from capillary condensation to interface localization is found. The latter occurs under conditions where in the bulk almost complete phase separation has occurred.

Roton-roton crossover in strongly correlated dipolar Bose-nonstnon condensates

2011

We study the pair correlations and excitations of a dipolar Bose gas layer. The anisotropy of the dipole-dipole interaction allows us to tune the strength of pair correlations from strong to weak perpendicular and weak to strong parallel to the layer by increasing the perpendicular trap frequency. This change is accompanied by a roton-roton crossover in the spectrum of collective excitations, from a roton caused by the head-to-tail attraction of dipoles to a roton caused by the side-by-side repulsion, while there is no roton excitation for intermediate trap frequencies. We discuss the nature of these two kinds of rotons and the relation to instabilities of dipolar Bose gases. In both regime…
