Numerical prediction of ventilated planing flat plates for the design of Air Cavity Ships
2017
In recent years, a great world issue is the respect for the environment. Each researcher, in his competence field, proposes new technologies and new approaches in order to reduce the environmental impact of a product or of an industrial process. In the naval field, the main way in order to reduce the environmental impact of the ship during the navigation is the reduction of the drag resistance and so the reduction of requested power. There are many ways in order to obtain a reduction of drag. This paper investigates, with a preliminary numerical study by means of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), the Air Cavity Ships technology (ACS). A first part of the paper concerns the study of the ri…
Design and manufacturing feasibility of ITER TBM Frame and Dummy TBMs
2016
Abstract The operation and test of mock-ups of tritium breeding blankets relevant for a future commercial reactor is one of the goals of the ITER machine. To accomplish this goal, mock-ups of breeding blankets, called Test Blanket Modules (TBMs), are installed in three ITER equatorial ports. Each TBM and the associated shield form a TBM-set that is mechanically attached to a steel frame called TBM Frame. A Frame and two TBM-Sets form a TBM Port Plug (TBM PP). The ITER Organization is responsible for the design and manufacture of the TBM Frames and of the Dummy TBMs that could replace the TBM-sets in case they were not available. This paper describes the recent results of the design supporti…
Electrochromic polyoxometalate material as a sensor of bacterial activity
2015
L. fermentum, a bacterium of human microbiota, acts as an electron donor to the electrochromic [P2MoVI18O62]6. Since, the reductive capacity of L. fermentum correlates with its metabolic activity, the reaction with [P2MoVI18O62]6- affords a means of evaluating its activity. Following this logic, we have concluded that vancomycin severely affects the activity of L. fermentum whereas omeprazole does not.
Norovirus in captive lion cub (Panthera leo)
2007
African lions (Panthera leo) are susceptible to viral diseases of domestic carnivores, including feline calici-virus infection. We report the identification of a novel enteric calicivirus, genetically related to human noroviruses of genogroup IV, in a lion cub that died of severe hemorrhagic enteritis.

Analysis and Design of Induction Liquid Metal Processes Using Advanced Numerical Modelling
2019
Comprehensive knowledge of the turbulent flows, heat and mass transfer processes in the melt of induction applications is required to realize efficient metallurgical processes. Therefore, the process oriented development, design and optimization of induction furnaces for melting and casting of metals require praxis oriented simulation and analysis of the complex in-stationary turbulent melt flows and temperature distributions as well as the heat and mass transfer processes in the liquid metal. The studies, presented in this paper, demonstrate the possibilities of using advanced three-dimensional transient numerical modelling for successful simulation of the melt flow as well as heat and mas…
The magnetohydrodynamic force experienced by spherical iron particles in liquid metal
2016
Abstract The paper contains a theoretical investigation of magnetohydrodynamic force experienced by iron particles (well-conducting and ferromagnetic) in well-conducting liquid. The investigation is performed by extending the Leenov and Kolin's theory to take into account the second-order effect. Therefore, the limits of the parent model are taken over to the present results. It is found that the effective conductivity of iron particles in liquid metal, which is important for practical application of the theoretically obtained force, is approximately equal to 1.5·106 S/m. The last result is obtained using a quasi-empirical approach – a comparison of experimental results with the results of …
Characterization and thermomechanical assessment of a SiC-sandwich material for Flow Channel Inserts in DCLL blankets
2019
Abstract Flow Channel Inserts (FCIs) are key elements in the high-temperature Dual Coolant Lead Lithium (DCLL) blanket, since they insulate electrically the flowing PbLi to avoid MHD effects and protect the steel structure from the hot liquid metal. SiC-based materials are main candidates for high-temperature FCIs, being a dense-porous SiC-based sandwich material an attractive option. The present work is focused on the development of such a SiC-based material. On the one hand, in order to assess the suitability of the concept for FCIs, the main results of a stress analysis, MHD and heat transfer simulations are summarized. On the other hand, the experimental production of the SiC-based mate…
Permanent magnet centrifugal pump for liquid aluminium stirring
2016
In liquid aluminium processing, it is important to ensure continuous mixing of the molten metal to ensure temperature and composition homogeneity, and to improve degassing of the metal. Aluminium and its alloys are often processed in special degassing chambers after preparation in order to avoid segregation and to improve material structure, and to avoid gas pores. This extra step increases material costs and may cause material contamination. In this article, we present the idea to use centrifugal permanent magnet stirrer to induce liquid aluminium motion through thick furnace wall by creating high-speed local liquid metal jet. Analytical estimation, numerical modelling and experimental tes…
Thermal-hydraulic and thermo-mechanical simulations of Water-Heavy Liquid Metal interactions towards the DEMO WCLL breeding blanket design
2019
Abstract The Water-Cooled Lithium Lead breeding blanket concept foresees the eutectic lithium-lead (Pb-15.7Li) alloy being cooled by pressurized sub-cooled water (temperature 295–328 °C; pressure 15.5 MPa) flowing in double wall tubes. Therefore, the interaction between the Pb-15.7Li and water (e.g. tube rupture) represents one of the main safety concerns for the design and safety analysis. Available LIFUS5/Mod2 experimental data are employed to assess the performances of thermal-hydraulic and thermo-mechanic codes. Thermal-hydraulic simulations, by SIMMER-III code, are focused on the prediction of the thermodynamic interaction among the fluids. ABAQUS Finite Element code, used for the desi…
