Experimental nonlinear electrical reaction-diffusion lattice

1998

International audience; A nonlinear electrical reaction-diffusion lattice modelling the Nagumo equation is presented. It is shown that this system supports front propagation with a given velocity. This propagation is observed experimentally using a video acquisition system, and the measured velocity of the front is in perfect agreement with the theoretical prediction.

High frequencies of antibiotic resistance genes in infants' meconium and early fecal samples

2016

The gastrointestinal tract (GIT) microbiota has been identified as an important reservoir of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) that can be horizontally transferred to pathogenic species. Maternal GIT microbes can be transmitted to the offspring, and recent work indicates that such transfer starts before birth. We have used culture-independent genetic screenings to explore whether ARGs are already present in the meconium accumulated in the GIT during fetal life and in feces of 1-week-old infants. We have analyzed resistance to β-lactam antibiotics (BLr) and tetracycline (Tcr), screening for a variety of genes conferring each. To evaluate whether ARGs could have been inherited by maternal tr…

The G428A Nonsense Mutation in FUT2 Provides Strong but Not Absolute Protection against Symptomatic GII.4 Norovirus Infection

2009

In November 2004, 116 individuals in an elderly nursing home in El Grao de Castellón, Spain were symptomatically infected with genogroup II.4 (GII.4) norovirus. The global attack rate was 54.2%. Genotyping of 34 symptomatic individuals regarding the FUT2 gene revealed that one patient was, surprisingly, a non-secretor, hence indicating secretor-independent infection. Lewis genotyping revealed that Lewis-positive and negative individuals were susceptible to symptomatic norovirus infection indicating that Lewis status did not predict susceptibility. Saliva based ELISA assays were used to determine binding of the outbreak virus to saliva samples. Saliva from a secretor-negative individual boun…

Cross-correlation and cross-power spectral density representation by complex spectral moments

2017

Abstract A new approach to provide a complete characterization of normal multivariate stochastic vector processes is presented in this paper. Such proposed method is based on the evaluation of the complex spectral moments of the processes. These quantities are strictly related to the Mellin transform and they are the generalization of the integer-order spectral moments introduced by Vanmarcke. The knowledge of the complex spectral moments permits to obtain the power spectral densities and their cross counterpart by a complex series expansions. Moreover, with just the aid of some mathematical properties the complex fractional moments permit to obtain also the correlation and cross-correlatio…

Dynamical and statistical properties of high-temperature self-propagating fronts: An experimental study

2009

International audience; We present a detailed experimental study of high-temperature self-propagating fronts using image processing techniques. The intrinsic features of the wave propagation are investigated as a function of the combustion temperature TC for a model system made of titanium and silicon powders. Different front behavior is realized by changing the molar ratio x of the mixture Ti+xSi. Outside the range x=[0.3,1.5], no thermal front is propagating while inside, three regimes are observed: steady-state combustion which is characterized by a flat front propagating at constant velocity and two unsteady regimes. The combustion temperature (or the corresponding ratio x) is thus play…

Solidification microstructure during selective laser melting of Ni based superalloy: experiment and mesoscopic modelling

2019

International audience; A set of single track laser melting experiments was performed in a selective laser melting (SLM). The tracks were done on an Inconel 718 plate with various laser scan velocities at a constant laser power of 150 W. The geometries of the molten pool (MP), as well as the solidified dendrite structures, i.e., primary and secondary dendrite arm spacing (PDAS and SDAS), in the cross sections of the molten path were characterized to evaluate the effect of the laser scan velocity during SLM. Moreover, the local solidification thermal conditions (cooling rate R*, tip growth velocity V* and temperature gradient G*) at the MP bottom were deduced from the SDAS and the geometries…

Plasmatic extracellular vesicle microRNAs in malignant pleural mesothelioma and asbestos-exposed subjects suggest a 2-miRNA signature as potential bi…

2017

Background Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma (MPM) is an aggressive cancer mainly caused by asbestos exposure and refractory to current therapies. Specific diagnostic markers for early MPM diagnosis are needed. Changes in miRNA expression have been implicated in several diseases and cancers, including MPM. We examined if a specific miRNA signature in plasmatic extracellular vesicles (EV) may help to discriminate between malignant pleural mesothelioma patients (MPM) and subjects with Past Asbestos Exposure (PAE). Methodology/Principal findings We investigated 23 MPM patients and 19 cancer-free subjects with past asbestos exposure (PAE). We screened 754 miRNAs in plasmatic EVs by OpenArray and f…

Impact of Gluten-Friendly Bread on the Metabolism and Function of In Vitro Gut Microbiota in Healthy Human and Coeliac Subjects

2016

The main aim of this paper was to assess the in vitro response of healthy and coeliac human faecal microbiota to gluten-friendly bread (GFB). Thus, GFB and control bread (CB) were fermented with faecal microbiota in pH-controlled batch cultures. The effects on the major groups of microbiota were monitored over 48 h incubations by fluorescence in situ hybridisation. Short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) were measured by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Furthermore, the death kinetics of Lactobacillus acidophilus, Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis, Staphylococcus aureus, and Salmonella Typhimurium in a saline solution supplemented with GFB or CB were also assessed. The experiment…

Association of Maternal Secretor Status and Human Milk Oligosaccharides With Milk Microbiota: An Observational Pilot Study

2019

Background and Objectives: Breast milk contains several bioactive factors including oligosaccharides (HMO) and microbes that shape the infant gut microbiota. HMO profile is determined by secretor status, however their influence on milk microbiota is still uncovered. This study is aimed to determine the impact of the FUT2 genotype on the milk microbiota during the first month of lactation and the association with HMO. Methods: Milk microbiota from 25 healthy lactating women was determined by quantitative PCR and 16S gene pyrosequencing. Secretor genotype was obtained by PCR-RFLPs and by HMO identification and quantification. Results: The most abundant bacteria were Staphylococcus and Strepto…
