Effects of aquaculture waste feeds and antibiotics on marine benthic ecosystems in the Mediterranean Sea

Intensive aquaculture is an important source of organic waste and antibiotics into the marine environment. Yet, their impacts on benthic marine ecosystems are poorly understood. Here, we investigated the ecological impacts of fish feed waste alone and in combination with three different antibiotics (i.e., oxytetracycline, florfenicol and flumequine) in benthic ecosystems of the Mediterranean Sea by performing a field experiment. Micellar liquid Chromatographic determination of diuretics by diazotization and coupling with the Bratton-Marshall reagent

Abstract A Chromatographic procedure that uses micellar mobile phases of sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) and propanol at pH 3 is reported for the determination, in urine samples, of thiazide diuretics (althiazide, bendroflumethiazide, chlorothiazide, hydrochlorothiazide, hydroflumethiazide, and trichloromethiazide), and other diuretics having a sulphonamide substituent in the benzene ring. Precolumn derivatization with sodium nitrite and N -(1-naphthyl)ethylenediamine, to form the coloured azo dyes of the hydrolyzed diuretics, decreased the polarity of the compounds and, consequently, their retention in the micellar eluents, and permitted detection in the visible region, eliminating thus the …

Modeling the probability distribution of peak discharge for infiltrating hillslopes

Hillslope response plays a fundamental role in the prediction of peak discharge at the basin outlet. The peak discharge for the critical duration of rainfall and its probability distribution are needed for designing urban infrastructure facilities. This study derives the probability distribution, denoted as GABS model, by coupling three models: (1) the Green-Ampt model for computing infiltration, (2) the kinematic wave model for computing discharge hydrograph from the hillslope, and (3) the intensity-duration-frequency (IDF) model for computing design rainfall intensity. Discharge estimation in open channels by means of water level hydrograph analysis

A new methodology, based on the synchronous measurement of stage hydrographs in two river sections located some kilometers from each other, was developed to estimate the discharge hydrograph in the upstream section. The methodology is based on the one-parameter calibration of a numerical flow routing algorithm, solving the Saint-Venant equations in diffusive or complete form. Reduction of scouring downstream of a rigid bed by means of a vegetated carpet: experimental investigation in a laboratory flume

Vegetation is a critical component of aquatic ecosystems and exerts an important role in river morphodynamics. This paper describes the results of laboratory study carried out to investigate the role of vegetation on flow field and erosion process developing in non-equilibrium situations. Particular attention is paid to scour evolving downstream of a rigid bed and to the effect of a vegetated carpet used as a protective measure against scouring. Abstract The plane evolution of a meander wave is determined by the erosion processes at the banks. Particularly, the outer- bank is considerably vulnerable to the erosion processes. Flow Velocity Measurements in Vegetated Channels

Understanding of the hydraulics of flow over vegetation is very important to support the management of fluvial processes. In this paper the flow over flexible bottom vegetation is experimentally studied. A two-dimensional-acoustic doppler velocimeter is used to measure the local flow velocities for different vegetation concentrations, discharges, and flume slopes. The influence of vegetation concentration and the depth/vegetation height ratio on the measured velocity profiles is analyzed. Management of coastal waters and lagoons by mathematical circulation models requires determination of the hydraulic resistance of submerged vegetation. A plant typical of sandy coastal bottoms in the Mediterranean Sea is Posidonia oceanica, which is constituted by very thin and flexible ribbon-like leaves, about 1 cm wide and up to 1.5 m long, and usually covers the bottom with a density of 500-1000 plants/ m2. Vegetation effects on cross-sectional flow in a large amplitude meandering bend

ABSTRACTCross-stream circulation, which develops in meandering bends, exerts an important role in velocity redistribution. This paper investigates how the presence of vegetation could affect the evolution pattern of cross-stream flow along a high-curvature meandering bend. The analysis is conducted with the aid of data collected in a meandering laboratory flume over non-vegetated and vegetated beds. ADV measurements of velocity distributions in a gravel-bed flume

Velocity measurements carried out by an acoustic doppler velocimeter (ADV) in a rectangular laboratory flume having a gravel bed are presented. The velocity profiles are measured in six verticals of the channel cross-section having an increasing distance (from 4 to 38.5 cm) from the flume wall. The experimental runs are carried out for five different bed arrangements, characterized by different concentrations of coarser elements, and for the two conditions of small- and large-scale roughness.
