First Evidence of Contourite Drifts in the North-Western Sicilian Active Continental Margin (Southern Tyrrhenian Sea)

We present the results of an integrated geomorphological and seismo-stratigraphic study based on high resolution marine data acquired in the north-western Sicilian continental margin. We document for the first time five contourite drifts (marked as EM1a, EM2b, EM2, EM3a, and EM3b), located in the continental slope at depths between ca. 400 and 1500 m. EM1a,b have been interpreted as elongated mounded drifts. EM1a,b are ca. 3 km long, 1.3 km wide, and have a maximum thickness of 36 m in their center that thins northwards, while EM1b is smaller with a thickness up to 24 m. Pyrolysis was carried out at 300, 400 and 500 °C, the products determined by GC–MS and then examined for similarities and differences using multivariate data analysis. Analysis showed that longifolene was most resistant and caryophyllene least resistant to pyrolysis with cedrene and valencene occupying intermediate positions. In the realm of wartime history, a little real analysis has been done on the implications of total war in Sicily. Indeed, World War II transformed the relationship between fascist regime and society. Moreover, there are few studies on reorganization of the connections between local institutions and fascist government. Civilians have been most involved in this process. ABSTRACT Morphology of a given species can vary among individuals, morphology differences can be found between populations males can be different from females (sexual dimorphism) or e.g. with young and old individuals. The aim of the present study was to investigate morphological variability in the unionidae mussel Anodonta anatina originating from two populations. Measured variables included length, height, width, volume and dry mass of shell, dry mass of soft tissues and gill blades, and age, sex, estimation of glochidium larvae produced.
