Endoscopic aqueductoplasty through a tailored craniocervical approach.
2005
Object. Neuroendoscopy has an essential role in the management of occlusive hydrocephalus due to a membranous obstruction of the sylvian aqueduct. Well-known endoscopic methods include endoscopic third ventriculostomy (ETV) and endoscopic aqueductoplasty through a frontal burr hole. Building on their experience in the endoscopic management of hydrocephalus, the authors realized that not all of their patients with aqueductal obstruction were eligible for the aforementioned lines of treatment. Certain anatomical situations made it impossible to perform ETV or endoscopic aqueductoplasty through a frontal burr hole. Long-term complications of the shunt system led the authors to seek an alternat…
The association of urine metals and metal mixtures with cardiovascular incidence in an adult population from Spain: the Hortega Follow-Up Study
2019
AbstractBackgroundThe association of low-level exposure to metals and metal mixtures with cardiovascular incidence in the general population has rarely been studied. We flexibly evaluated the association of urinary metals and metal mixtures concentrations with cardiovascular diseases in a representative sample of a general population from Spain.MethodsUrine antimony (Sb), barium (Ba), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), cobalt (Co), copper (Cu), molybdenum (Mo), vanadium (V) and zinc (Zn) were measured in 1171 adults without clinical cardiovascular diseases, who participated in the Hortega Study. Cox proportional hazard models were used for evaluating the association between single metals and card…
Otoneurological management of petrous apex cholesterol granuloma
2009
Objective: The aim of the study is to review the management of petrous apex cholesterol granuloma. The surgical approaches for drainage or total removal and the wait and see policy were analyzed, and outcomes were evaluated. Methods: Retrospective charts of 27 patients managed for petrous apex cholesterol granuloma with a minimum follow-up of 12 months were analyzed in a quartenary skull base center. Presenting symptoms and signs were recorded, and radiologic imaging was evaluated. Management options included wait and see policy and surgery by several approaches. Results: The mean age of patients affected by the lesion was 38.8 years. The mean follow-up was 56.7 months. Patients complained …
Management of naso-septal deformity in childhood: long-term results.
2008
Abstract Objective The classical teaching advocates a conservative approach for children presenting with various naso-septal deformities. It may not be appropriate especially when it causes nasal obstruction to the growing child. This study has two main purposes: to contribute in identifying the correct selection criteria for surgical management of pediatric patients and in selecting the most appropriate surgical technique. Material and method We reviewed a series of 46 cases of post-traumatic septal and naso-septal deformity not managed promptly or with recurrence of nasal deviation, following bones fracture correction alone. The mean follow-up was 10 years. Results Patients with naso-sept…
Early Results of Fissurectomy and Advancement Flap for Resistant Chronic Anal Fissure without Hypertonia of the Internal Anal Sphincter
2010
The aim of this study was to assess the efficacy of fissurectomy with skin advancement flap in healing chronic anal fissures without hypertonia of the internal anal sphincter. Twenty-six consecutive patients who failed healing after well-practiced topical medical therapy were enrolled. Anorectal manometry was performed preoperative and 6 months postoperatively. All patients were treated with fissurectomy and advancement flap through healthy skin tissue. All patients healed completely within 30 days from operation. The intensity and the duration of pain post-defecation was reduced significantly with respect to the preoperative values starting from the first defecation. One patient suffered …
Endoscopic and histological findings in the duodenum of adults with celiac disease before and after changing to a gluten-free diet: a 2-year prospect…
2006
Published follow-up data on small-intestinal recovery in patients with celiac disease are scarce and contradictory. This is especially the case for adult patients, who often show incomplete histological recovery after starting a gluten-free diet (GFD). We conducted a 2-year prospective study to evaluate the effectiveness of a GFD in improving the endoscopic and histological duodenal findings in adults with celiac disease. We studied 42 consecutive adults with newly diagnosed celiac disease (13 men, 29 women; mean age 32.7 years, range 15 - 72 years). All the patients underwent esophagogastroduodenoscopy and small-bowel biopsy. We devised our own grading system for the endoscopic appearance o…
Motives for and Barriers to Physical Activity in Twin Pairs Discordant for Leisure Time Physical Activity for 30 Years
2012
Long-term persistent physical activity is important in the prevention of chronic diseases, but a large number of people do not participate in physical activity to obtain health benefits. The purpose of this study was to examine the motives and perceived barriers to long-term engagement in leisure time physical activity. Same-sex twin pairs (N=16, mean age 60) discordant for physical activity over 30 years were identified from the Finnish Twin Cohort. We evaluated participants' physical activity motivation with the 73-item Recreational Exercise Motivation Measure and assessed barriers to physical activity with a 25-item questionnaire. The characteristics of physical activity motivation and p…
Factors Influencing Tinnitus Loudness and Annoyance
2006
Objective To evaluate the 2 major components of tinnitus severity, loudness and annoyance, and their degree of dependence on characteristics of tinnitus manifestation, history, and etiology. Design Cross-sectional survey performed during the first months of 2004. Setting Nonclinical population. Participants A total of 4995 members of the German Tinnitus League. Main Outcome Measures Comprehensive screening questionnaire, including the Klockhoff and Lindblom loudness grading system and the miniversion of the Tinnitus Questionnaire. Results A moderate correlation of 0.45 was found between tinnitus loudness and annoyance. Both factors were generally higher in men, those older than 50 years, th…
Long-term follow-up of children with magnetic resonance imaging and ultrasound after treatment of brain tumors
1987
This paper compares the results of MRI and US follow-up examinations of 46 children who had undergone surgery for brain tumors. The cases included 42 posterior fossa tumors, 3 supratentorial tumors and 1 upper cervical spinal cord tumor. US examination proved to be less specific and sensitive than MRI. However, when a "bone window" is available, US is, because of the ease of its application, better suited for frequent routine examinations. Long-term follow-up should, therefore, consist of frequent regular US examinations combined with yearly MRI examinations.
Operative Treatment of Scoliosis With Cotrel-Dubousset-Hopf Instrumentation
1997
Study design This study analyzes the effects of a new anterior spinal instrumentation system and the results of use in 50 patients with scoliosis. Objectives Anterior spine systems are reviewed. The principles of a new anterior spinal instrumentation system allowing for postoperative care without external support are discussed. Summary of background data Numerous different implants have been presented in the literature for anterior spinal surgery. Nevertheless a primary stable anterior instrumentation was not available for multisegmental procedures until now, and the restoration of lordosis in the lumbar spine was very difficult with the common devices. The development of more stable device…
