Effect of Morphology and Size of Halloysite Nanotubes on Functional Pectin Bionanocomposites for Food Packaging Applications
2017
Pectin bionanocomposite films filled with various concentrations of two different types of halloysite nanotubes were prepared and characterized in this study as potential films for food packaging applications. The two types of halloysite nanotubes were long and thin (patch) (200-30 000 nm length) and short and stubby (Matauri Bay) (50-3000 nm length) with different morphological, physical, and dispersibility properties. Both matrix (pectin) and reinforcer (halloysite nanotubes) used in this study are considered as biocompatible, natural, and low-cost materials. Various characterization tests including Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy, rele…
Religious Organizations and Local Self-government Units as Entities Cooperating in The Enforcement of Criminal Judgements
2019
Związki wyznaniowe oraz jednostki samorządu terytorialnego to podmioty współdziałające w wykonywaniu kar, środków karnych, kompensacyjnych, zabezpieczających, zapobiegawczych oraz przepadku. Można je również traktować w kategoriach organów społecznej kontroli nad wykonywaniem tych orzeczeń. Współdziałanie takich podmiotów uzyskało rangę dyrektywy ustawowej i służyć ma readaptacji społecznej skazanych i zapobieganiu przestępczości. W przypadku przedstawicieli związków wyznaniowych współdziałanie posiada także charakter wychowawczy i poprawczy. Religious organizations and local self-government units are entities cooperating in the implementation of penalties, penal, compensatory, protective a…
OMNI-DRL: Learning to Fly in Forests with Omnidirectional Images
2022
Perception is crucial for drone obstacle avoidance in complex, static, and unstructured outdoor environments. However, most navigation solutions based on Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) use limited Field-Of-View (FOV) images as input. In this paper, we demonstrate that omnidirectional images improve these methods. Thus, we provide a comparative benchmark of several visual modalities for navigation: ground truth depth, ground truth semantic segmentation, and RGB images. These exhaustive comparisons reveal that it is superior to use an omnidirectional camera to navigate with classical DRL methods. Finally, we show in two different virtual forest environments that adapting the convolution to…
The effects of mental fatigue on sport-related performance
2018
International audience; Mental fatigue is known to increase subjective feelings of fatigue and to decrease cognitive performance, but its impact on physical performance remains poorly understood. The aim of this chapter was to review the results of 29 studies published between 2009 and April 2018 and focusing on the impact of mental fatigue on sport-related performance. Taken all studies together, it appears that mental fatigue impairs endurance performance, motor skills performance and decision-making performance. However, maximal force production is not reduced in the presence of mental fatigue. These observations suggest that mental fatigue impairs sport-related performance during exerci…
Domain wall pinning in ultra-narrow electromigrated break junctions
2014
The study of magnetic domain walls in constrained geometries is an important topic, yet when dealing with extreme nanoscale magnetic systems artefacts can often dominate the measurements and obscure the effects of intrinsic magnetic origin. In this work we study the evolution of domain wall depinning in electromigrated ferromagnetic junctions which are both initially fabricated and subsequently tailored in-situ in clean ultra-high vacuum conditions. Carefully designed Ni(80)Fe(20) (Permalloy) notched half-ring structures are fabricated and investigated as a function of constriction width by tailoring the size of the contact using controlled in-situ electromigration. It is found that the dom…
Molecular interactions in 1-pentanol +2-methyl-2-butanol mixtures: Static dielectric constant, viscosity and refractive index investigations at 5, 25…
1989
Static dielectric constants, refractive indices and viscosities of 1-pentanol +2-methyl-2-butanol mixtures were measured at 5, 25 and 45°C. The results show that the mixing of the two isomers modifies the polarizability and the resistence of viscous flow of the system depending on the composition and temperature. Short range intermolecular interactions producing hetero-alcohol open dimers are considered.
The weight function for charges - A rigorous theoretical concept for Kelvin probe force microscopy
2016
A comprehensive discussion of the physical origins of Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM) signals for charged systems is given. We extend the existing descriptions by including the openloop operation mode, which is relevant when performing KPFM in electrolyte solutions. We define the contribution of charges to the KPFM signal by a weight function, which depends on the electric potential and on the capacitance of the tip-sample system. We analyze the sign as well as the lateral decay of this weight function for different sample types, namely, conductive samples as well as dielectric samples with permittivities both larger and smaller than the permittivity of the surrounding medium. Dependin…
Ferroelectricity and piezoelectricity in soft biological tissue: Porcine aortic walls revisited
2017
Recently reported piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM) measurements have proposed that porcine aortic walls are ferroelectric. This finding may have great implications for understanding biophysical properties of cardiovascular diseases such as arteriosclerosis. However, the complex anatomical structure of the aortic wall with different extracellular matrices appears unlikely to be ferroelectric. The reason is that a prerequisite for ferroelectricity, which is the spontaneous switching of the polarization, is a polar crystal structure of the material. Although the PFM measurements were performed locally, the phase-voltage hysteresis loops could be reproduced at different positions on the tis…
Force Measurements on Myelin Basic Protein Adsorbed to Mica and Lipid Bilayer Surfaces Done with the Atomic Force Microscope
1999
The mechanical and adhesion properties of myelin basic protein (MBP) are important for its function, namely the compaction of the myelin sheath. To get more information about these properties we used atomic force microscopy to study tip-sample interaction of mica and mixed dioleoylphosphatidylserine (DOPS) (20%)/egg phosphatidylcholine (EPC) (80%) lipid bilayer surfaces in the absence and presence of bovine MBP. On mica or DOPS/EPC bilayers a short-range repulsive force (decay length 1.0-1.3 nm) was observed during the approach. The presence of MBP always led to an attractive force between tip and sample. When retracting the tip again, force curves on mica and on lipid layers were different…
Molecular Ribbons Containing Pyridine Rings
1996
The first synthesis of the ribbon-like compounds 6–10 is described. The new building block diethyl 2,6-bis(bromomethyl)pyridine-3,5-dicarboxylate 1 was prepared and characterized. Single-crystal X-ray structure analyses indicate that these ribbon-like molecules arrange in a folded conformation, with the pyridine and benzene units being folded in a face-to-face manner, and the tosyl units of 8–10 pointing outwards. The “intramolecular self-assembly” (folding) of these molecular ribbons is primarily attributable to the energetically more favourable syn conformation of both the [3.3]metacyclophanes and the pyridinophanes.
