Weak Intermolecular Anion–π Interactions in Pentafluorobenzyl-Substituted Ammonium Betaines

A series of ammonium–carboxylate and ammonium–sulfonate betaines was synthesized and studied by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis to investigate the weak intermolecular interactions as well as the intramolecular interactions in the solid state. None of the expected intramolecular anion–π interactions could be observed, probably because of the steric demands and the reduced nucleophilicity of the anionic part of the betaines. Nevertheless, a weak intermolecular anion–π interaction between the anionic part of the betaine and the pentafluorophenyl unit is present in the structure of 5a.
Intramolecular Nitrone Cycloaddition of α-(Trifluoromethyl)styrenes. Role of the CF3 Group in the Regioselectivity

The intramolecular 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition of ortho-substituted 1,1,1-trifluoromethylstyrene-derived nitrones is described. Tricyclic fused isoxazolidines were obtained as major or exclusive products, in contrast to the case for nonfluorinated substrates, which rendered the bridged derivatives. This change in the regioselectivity was attributed to the electronic and, particularly, steric requirements of the trifluoromethyl group in comparison to the methyl group. Isomers 1,2-dichlorobenzene (o-DCB) and 1,3-dichlorobenzene (m-DCB) were high-pressure frozen in-situ in a Merrill–Bassett diamond–anvil cell and their structures determined at room temperature and at 0.18 (5) GPa for o-DCB, and 0.17 (5) GPa for m-DCB by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. A Theoretical Learning Model Combining Stochastic Cellular Automata and Economic Indicators to Simulate Land Use Change

The study of change in land use has been included in territorial planning to inform spatial planners and policy makers of the possible developments they face in order to optimize future management decisions. In this paper the authors present the core of an original learning model coupling stochastic Cellular Automata and economic indicators to simulate the land use change. This model is an important step in building an “environmental virtual laboratory” to explore, explain and forecast land use change.
Experimental Tests of Fatigue Induced Delamination in Gfrp and Cfrp Laminates

This work deals with the experimental analysis of the delamination phenomena in various composite materials under different loading conditions. Quasi-static and fatigue tests are performed on specimens made of glass-fibre reinforced plastic (GFRP) and carbon-fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP). In particular, under both quasi-static and fatigue loading, single fracture modes I and II (using standard DCB and ENF test configurations) and mixed modes I+II (using the MMB test configuration) with several mode mixtures, have been analysed. Further experiments of delamination growth with mode mixture that varies with the crack length, will be performed.

It also draws attention to some neglected strands of research which provide useful insights into strategies that could allow productivity enhancements in this area of the economy. It is well-known that protein-modified implant surfaces such as TiO(2) show a higher bioconductivity. Fibronectin is a glycoprotein from the extracellular matrix (ECM) with a major role in cell adhesion. It can be applied on titanium oxide surfaces to accelerate implant integration. Not only the surface concentration but also the presentation of the protein plays an important role for the cellular response. Defined-size DNA triple crossover construct for molecular electronics: modification, positioning and conductance properties.

We present a novel, defined-size, small and rigid DNA template, a so-called B-A-B complex, based on DNA triple crossover motifs (TX tiles), which can be utilized in molecular scale patterning for nanoelectronics, plasmonics and sensing applications. The feasibility of the designed construct is demonstrated by functionalizing the TX tiles with one biotin-triethylene glycol (TEG) and efficiently decorating them with streptavidin, and furthermore by positioning and anchoring single thiol-modified B-A-B complexes to certain locations on a chip via dielectrophoretic trapping.
