Mechanical Coupling Between Muscle-Tendon Units Reduces Peak Stresses
2017
The presence of mechanical linkages between synergistic muscles and their common tendons may distribute forces among the involved structures. We review studies, using humans and other animals, examining muscle and tendon interactions and discuss the hypothesis that connections between muscle bellies and within tendons may serve as a mechanism to distribute forces and mitigate peak stresses. peerReviewed
Propulsion Calculated by Force and Displacement of Center of Mass in Treadmill Cross-Country Skiing
2022
This study evaluated two approaches for estimating the total propulsive force on a skier’s center of mass (COM) with double-poling (DP) and V2-skating (V2) skiing techniques. We also assessed the accuracy and the stability of each approach by changing the speed and the incline of the treadmill. A total of 10 cross-country skiers participated in this study. Force measurement bindings, pole force sensors, and an eight-camera Vicon system were used for data collection. The coefficient of multiple correlation (CMC) was calculated to evaluate the similarity between the force curves. Mean absolute force differences between the estimated values and the reference value were computed to evalua…
Efficient photoinduced electron transfer in a porphyrin tripod-fullerene supramolecular complex via pi-pi interactions in nonpolar media.
2010
A novel porphyrin tripod (TPZn(3)) was synthesized via "click chemistry". Three porphyrin moieties of TPZn(3) are geometrically close and linked by a flexible linker. The electron-transfer oxidation of TPZn(3) results in intramolecular pi-dimer formation between porphyrin moieties as indicated by electrochemical, vis-NIR, and ESR measurements. The cyclic voltammogram of TPZn(3) exhibited stepwise one-electron oxidation processes of three porphyrin moieties in the range from 0.58 to 0.73 V (vs SCE in CH(2)Cl(2)). When TPZn(3) was oxidized by tris(2,2'-bipyridyl)-ruthenium(III) ([Ru(bpy)(3)](3+)), the oxidized species (TPZn(3))(n+) (0n/= 3) exhibited a charge resonance band in the NIR region …
Employers’ Needs and Expectations for Qualified Employees (Case Study on the Opinions in One of the Regions in Latvia)
2015
Abstract Qualified, loyal and motivated employees are highly demanded by employers and business promoters. The paper deals with employers’ needs and expectations for qualified and loyal employees, and investigates cooperation of employers, educators and municipalities. The following methods were used: analysis of scientific publications; focus group discussions; surveys of employers, teaching staff, students and graduates of VEI. For survey data analysis descriptive statistical analysis, non-parametric statistical test of Kruskal-Wallis and factor analysis were applied. The main findings indicate that besides professional skills and competence, social competence, motivation to work and resp…
Toward the Understanding of the Photophysics and Photochemistry of 1-Nitronaphthalene under Solar Radiation: The First Theoretical Evidence of a Phot…
2015
1-Nitronaphthalene belongs to the class of nitrated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and constitutes an atmospheric pollutant commonly found in urban environments due to its production during incomplete combustions. On the basis of CASPT2//CASSCF quantum chemical calculations, the photophysics and photochemistry of the system under solar exposure have for the first time been studied. According to the characteristics of the incident radiation (either UVA or UVB, both present in the portion of the solar spectrum reaching the earth), a different excited state will be mainly populated. In both cases, the main decay path undertaken by the corresponding bright state leads to an efficient intersy…
Gender training for the judiciary in Argentina
2014
AbstractIn this paper I describe the two major Argentine experiences of gender training for the judiciary against the background of two relevant trends, women's entry in considerable numbers into the judiciary and the process of expansion of women's rights initiated after the restoration of democracy. The gap between the passing of progressive legislation and its lack of enforcement speaks of a tradition of women's subordination that is much engrained in our society and in its legal system. In spite of the existence of progressive egalitarian legislation stereotyped thinking prevails to prevent progressive legal practices. This constitutes a strong argument for gender training of the judici…
An adaption mechanism for the error threshold of XCSF
2020
Learning Classifier System (LCS) is a class of rule-based learning algorithms, which combine reinforcement learning (RL) and genetic algorithm (GA) techniques to evolve a population of classifiers. The most prominent example is XCS, for which many variants have been proposed in the past, including XCSF for function approximation. Although XCSF is a promising candidate for supporting autonomy in computing systems, it still must undergo parameter optimization prior to deployment. However, in case the later deployment environment is unknown, a-priori parameter optimization is not possible, raising the need for XCSF to automatically determine suitable parameter values at run-time. One of the mo…
Validation of the Multidimensional Driving Style Inventory (MDSI) in professional drivers: How does it work in transportation workers?
2019
Abstract The Multidimensional Driving Style Inventory or MDSI constitutes, perhaps, the most relevant tool for measuring driving styles. Since its releasing in 2004, it has been applied worldwide to different samples of drivers, showing an important value and utility for road safety. However, empirical studies using the MDSI on professional drivers are scarce and, to the date, there is no validated version of the instrument in this workforce yet. Objectives: This study had two aims. First, to describe in detail the validation of the Taubman-Ben-Ari’s MDSI among professional drivers and, second, to test its convergent validity with other key relevant factors present in the work environment o…
A theoretical study of the intramolecular charge transfer in 4-(dimethylamino)benzethyne
2014
We have investigated the non-adiabatic relaxation processes occurring in the singlet manifold of 4-(dimethylamino)benzethyne (DMABE){,} a molecule isoelectronic with 4-(dimethylamino)benzonitrile (DMABN) but lacking its characteristic dual fluorescence{,} using multireference perturbation theory methods. The results obtained point out to the existence of a two-fold decay mechanism in which the population of the initially accessed La state bifurcates towards a locally excited (LE) and a [small pi][sigma]* state. Further relaxation to an emitting intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) state is impeded due to the presence of pronounced energy barriers along their associated potential energy surf…
