Adjustable prestressing for construction stages of incrementally launched bridges

Incrementally launched bridges, which are generally built with the static scheme of a continuous beam on supports, change their scheme several times during launching. In these different configurations, internal forces vary and bending moments of opposite signs occur in the same sections for different positions of deck during advancement. The influence of time-dependent phenomena in segmental construction of concrete cable-stayed bridges

Construction stages of a cable-stayed bridge are characterized by a sequence in which geometric configuration, restraints and consequently stress and strain patterns vary many times till the final arrangement is achieved. When construction of concrete bridges is made by cantilever method the influence of time-dependent phenomena becomes significant. In this study an evaluation of stay stressing procedures is given by taking into account creep and shrinkage in cantilever construction of concrete cable-stayed bridges. The wind behaviour of a stayed footbridge has been analyzed. In order to avoid aeroelastic phenomena, an experimental campaign on a 1:15 scale model has been realized at the boundary-layer wind-tunnel of the Milan Polytechnic. The aerodynamic characterization of the structure has allowed to direct the project towards the choice of non-solid barriers, but with a medium porosity, by avoiding possible problems that can lead to ultimate limit state condi-tions of the structure (e.g., flutter or vortex shedding). In this way the quantitative effect of barriers has been estimated deducing reliable values not only for the alongwind forces, but also for the crosswind and torsional actions.

The way wear goes: phytolith-based wear on the dentine–enamel system in guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus)

The effect of phytoliths on tooth wear and function has been contested in studies of animal–plant interactions. For herbivores whose occlusal chewing surface consists of enamel ridges and dentine tissue, the phytoliths might particularly erode the softer dentine, exposing the enamel ridges to different occlusal forces and thus contributing to enamel wear. Causality, non-locality and three-body Casimir–Polder energy between three ground-state atoms

The problem of relativistic causality in the time-dependent three-body Casimir–Polder interaction energy between three atoms, initially in their bare ground-state, is discussed. It is shown that the non-locality of the spatial correlations of the electromagnetic field emitted by the atoms during their dynamical self-dressing may become manifest in the dynamical three-body Casimir–Polder interaction energy between the three atoms.

Bounds to internal forces for elastic-plastic solids subjected to variable loads

Considering an elastic-plastic workhardening solid with piecewise linear yield surfaces and a piecewise linear workhardening law, we give a method for constructing bounds to the internal forces and to the (hardened) yield stresses produced by the action of variable loads at any point of the body and at any time. The loading history is supposed to be unknown, but the loads range within a given domain.
