Basic processes in interference paradigms

The aim of the present thesis is to investigate the source of Stroop (interference) effects in weak bilinguals (Experiment 1) and in early language learning (Experiment 2-6). Participants performed a bilingual colour-word Stroop task with intermixed first language (L1) and second language (L2) words. The typical finding from the Stroop literature is slower and less accurate responding when the word and colour are incongruent (e.g., “red” in blue) relative to congruent (e.g., “red” in red). Interestingly, this congruency effect occurs for the colour words from both L1 and L2. What produces this congruency effect? Does vocationally oriented foreign language teaching meet the needs of Finnish and German vocational school students?

This article is based on upper secondary vocational school students’ interviews made in Finland and in Germany in 2016 and in 2017. The study results suggest that in both countries, English language skills are seen as the most important foreign language skills and the students would like to have more vocationally oriented English language classes with focus on authentic spoken language communication. The differences in the educational systems of the two countries might result in differences in students‘ perceptions of whether and to what extent they will actually need foreign languages in their future working life. nonPeerReviewed

Ääntäminen antaa ensivaikutelman vieraan kielen puhujan kielitaidosta, ja ymmärrettävä ääntämys on ensisijaisen tärkeää vieraskielisessä vuorovaikutuksessa. Syitä tähän kehityskulkuun on etsitty mm. kielikoulutuksen rahoituksen leikkauksista muuttuneisiin asenteisiin, mutta mitään yksittäistä ratkaisevaa tekijää ei ole löydetty. Myöskään tilanteen korjaamiseksi aloitetut kieliohjelmat eivät ole onnistuneet vaikuttamaan toivotusti pitkällä aikavälillä.
