This paper considers the phenomenon of migration, by proposing a case study upon the migration of Romanians in Italy. As a consequence of the access of Romania in the UE in January 2007, Romanians became citizens of UE, but, nevertheless, they are not aware of their rights and juridical statute and continue to live in a state of subordination and humility in their interaction with their employers. They do not rebel, since they are afraid of losing their working place. The article analyzes the relationship between clothing and ethnic identity in the works of Greek writer Lucian of Samosata. We concentrate on importance of clothes in the construction of foreigners’ “diversity” and we explain the symbolic role of the assumption of Greek attire in foreigners’ process of Hellenization. We also examine how Greek clothing represents, for Greek people in Roman context, a mark of ethnic and cultural differentiation.

We examine the material deprivation of foreigners on a sub-sample of the 2009 Italian Survey on Income and Living Conditions. We employ two indices of material deprivation that take into account the regional level of our analysis, and rely on the assignment of weights to items. The determinants of material deprivation are investigated through a zero-inflated beta model.
An Analysis of the Residential Segregation of Foreigners in the Municipality of Palermo

Ethnic residential segregation in Italy is emerging as a key question, which will be crucial in the definition and implementation of both urban and social policies. This chapter focuses on this phenomenon in the Italian Metropolitan Area of Palermo. We use individual data for all the population residing in the city on 31 December 2011, organised by ethnicity and neighbourhood to describe the spatial distribution and the residential segregation of foreigners in the city, applying many different segregation measures. The aim of this paper was to analyze how cultural identification, perceived discrimination and the sense of community are related to life satisfaction among foreign partners in intercultural families. The study compared 105 and 95 foreign partners in mixed families resident in Italy and Spain, respectively. The phenomenon in both countries displays similar sociodemographic aspects.
