Longitudinal Effects of the Home Learning Environment and Parental Difficulties on Reading and Math Development Across Grades 1–9

This study focuses on parental reading and mathematical difficulties, the home literacy environment, and the home numeracy environment as well as their predictive role in Finnish children’s reading and mathematical development through Grades 1–9. We examined if parental reading and mathematical difficulties directly predict children’s academic performance and/or if they are mediated by the home learning environment. Mothers (n = 1590) and fathers (n = 1507) reported on their reading and mathematical difficulties as well as on the home environment (shared reading, teaching literacy, and numeracy) when their children were in kindergarten. The study explores mothers’ of premature infants experience of how health centers especially adapted for families with premature infants can help them to cope with everyday life after discharge from a neonatal intensive care unit. Background: Premature children are at higher risk for physical and mental health problems, which makes parenting demanding. The transition between hospital and home is a challenging period where parents may need extra support to cope with everyday life. Also available from the publisher at: http://www.idunn.no/ts/tnb/2011/03/art06 The article presents results from a qualitative study of parents benefits in participation in course given to parents whose children are placed in foster care. The participants describe changes that had occurred in their life situations, and aspects of the course evaluated as useful. Essential findings indicate that the participants have increased self-confidence and regard their children in a new way. Foucault’s concepts of Power are applied in the analysis.
