Forest planning across Europe: the spatial scale, tools, and inter-sectoral integration in land-use planning

2014

New approaches to forest planning are needed to support the transition of European forests to sustainable management. The aim of this study is to review forest planning systems already in place throughout Europe by exploring a set of case-study countries reflecting the main silvicultural schools of Western Europe, including Belgium, Finland, France, Italy, Portugal, and Slovenia. A literature review and case-study data were used to assess the scale factors (vertical logic) as well as the relationships between forest planning and other environmental6 land-use planning sectors (horizontal logic). The influence of EU policy on the development of forest planning is also discussed. As assessed u…

Land management impacts on soil properties and initial soil erosion processes in olives and vegetable crops

2020

Abstract This research aims to assess the impacts of soil use management on runoff, soil losses, and their main soil controls in vegetable cropland (CROP), tilled olives (OT), and grass-covered olive orchards (OGC) on Leptosol in Croatia. Soil analysis and rainfall simulation experiments were conducted to quantify runoff (Run), soil, and nutrient losses. Bulk density (BD) was significantly higher at OT plots, in addition to the CROP plots. Water-stable aggregates (WSA), mean weight diameter (MWD), and soil organic matter (OM) were significantly higher in OGC plots compared to the other land uses. Run and soil loss (SL) were significantly higher in CROP and OT plots compared to the OGC plots…

Testing the Stage-Discharge Relationship in Sloping SMBF Flumes

2021

The Samani, Magallanez, Baiamonte, Ferro (SMBF) flume is a simple and inexpensive instrument for indirect discharge measurement that was originally proposed for use in a horizontal channel and then also applied in sloping channels. The contraction of the flow cross section, aimed at establishing a critical flow condition, is simply obtained by applying two half cylinders to the walls of a rectangular cross section. In this paper a theoretical approach previously proposed for a horizontal SMBF flume is first extended to a sloping SMBF flume and a new stage-discharge relationship is deduced. Then, this equation is experimentally tested using laboratory measurements from literature for differe…

Special issue on Trends and challenges of sustainable irrigated agriculture

2014

In the twenty-first century, the shortage of freshwater is one of the most important environmental concerns facing several regions of the world because of the growing demand of increasing population, agricultural intensification, and economic growth. Global climate change will contribute to exacerbate the problem, generating new drought-prone areas and increasing those already characterized by severe aridity. Worldwide it is estimated that, on average, agriculture accounts for 70% of the total water consumption, compared with 10% for domestic consume and the remaining used by industry. Moreover, according to FAO estimates, by 2050 agricultural production has to increase by 60% to satisfy th…

The contribution of forest restoration to the conservation of woody endangered species in Sicily

2017

Sicilian forest ecosystems are, in general, numerically poor in terms of their floristic composition. As many studies on Sicilian dendroflora have highlighted, such poorness is not intrinsic to forest formations, but it is due to the millenary human pressures. Repeated passage of fire, continuous wood usage and reforestations by single or few species dra- matically reduced the plant biodiversity of Sicilian forest ecosystems, often suffering of monodominance. The Sicilian dendroflora includes several endangered species, such as Abies nebrodensis, Betula aetnensis, Celtis tournefortii subsp. asperrima and subsp. aetnensis, as the wild pears, which in Sicily are represented by 4 endemic speci…

Exploring the spatial relationship between airborne-derived red and far-red sun-induced fluorescence and process-based GPP estimates in a forest ecos…

2019

International audience; Terrestrial gross primary productivity (GPP) plays an essential role in the global carbon cycle, but the quantification of the spatial and temporal variations in photosynthesis is still largely uncertain. Our work aimed to investigate the potential of remote sensing to provide new insights into plant photosynthesis at a fine spatial resolution. This goal was achieved by exploiting high-resolution images acquired with the FLuorescence EXplorer (FLEX) airborne demonstrator HyPlant. The sensor was flown over a mixed forest, and the images collected were elaborated to obtain two independent indicators of plant photosynthesis. First, maps of sun-induced chlorophyll fluore…
