Classifying plant communities and mapping their potential distribution using very large, heterogeneous, georeferenced datasets: the case study of the…

2014

In recent years, the scientific community has made significant efforts in order to create georeferenced vegetation databases (Global Index of Vegetation Plot Databases). These databases are useful to carry out assessments of the state of bio diversity, conservation of species and habitats, dispersion of alien species and as a support for the planning of land and protected areas. In this context, Italy has given birth to its own project called VegItaly, coordinated by the Italian Society of Vegetation Science and conducted by several research groups, in order to develop a uniform database for the entire country. Within this framework we have created a georeferenced database of phytosociolo…

Scirpetum radicantis Hejný in Hejný et Husák 1978 em. Zahlh. 1979, a plant association new to Poland

2011

The paper presents a rush community new to Poland - Scirpetum radicantis Hejny in Hejny et Husak 1978 em. Zahlh. 1979, belonging to the Phragmition alliance. It was discovered in fishponds near Olesno in Silesia (SW Poland). The floristic composition and the ecological requirements of this association are presented in the paper. Scirpetum radicantis is considered to be a very rare and endangered plant community in Europe.

FAMILY PIERIDE (LEPIDOPTERA, PIERIDAE) AND EVOLUTION OVER TIME IN FOREST GROVE SIBIU (SIBIU, ROMANIA)

2015

Transylvania, with its geographic location, flora and fauna is a well defined region, whereby, in addition to many common elements with neighboring areas, there are also some characteristic species, which so far continue to maintain the "endemic" status. The previous decades were very important for the development of Lepidopterological research in Sibiu and Transylvania, in the postwar years. The richness of insect fauna and especially the numerous species of Lepidoptera as of its existing knowledge of this group of insects stimulated the curiosity of many researchers since the middle of the 19th century.

Phytosociological survey of juniper wood vegetation in Tajikistan (Middle Asia)

2022

The paper presents the first syntaxonomic classification for juniper wood communities in Tajikistan with some remarks on their environmental gradients. A total of 119 relevés were sampled between 2015 and 2021 using the seven-degree Braun-Blanquet cover-abundance scale. They were classified by a modified TWINSPAN method. Diagnostic species were identified using phi coefficient as a fidelity measure. Detrended Correspondence Analysis (DCA) was used to determine relationships between samples, vegetation units and major gradients in species composition. Plant communities have been divided into two main groups. The first one is a west Irano-Turanian wood of Juniperus polycarpos var. seravschani…

Nemoralisation of Pinus sylvestris and Picea abies Forest Stands in the Hemi-Boreal Zone: A Case Study from Latvia

2021

Abstract At the beginning of the 21st century, in extensively managed mature and over-mature conifer stands (Pinus sylvestris and Picea abies) in Latvia, establishment of native deciduous broad-leaved (Acer platanoides, Tilia cordata, Quercus robur and Ulmus laevis), as well as alien broad-leaved species (Acer pseudoplatanus and Tilia platyphyllos) has been observed. The establishment of deciduous broad-leaved species in coniferous stands is a process known as nemoralisation of coniferous stands, which is characterised by a large number of seedlings of broad-leaved species, young trees and the formation of a subcanopy layer in stands. Based on the age measurements of individuals of broad-le…

Modelling for rearrangement of fusiform initials during radial growth of the vascular cambium in Pinus sylvestris L.

2013

In contrast to common belief, recent studies have confirmed that intrusive growth of fusiform cambial initials has a significant role in the rearrangement of the initials, but does not contribute to the cambial circumference increment. We observed a rapid rearrangement of cambial initials on a long series of transverse sections of the vascular cambium and the wood of a 50-year-old pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) tree. A comparison of cell arrangement in consecutive sections, as well as a critical analysis of tangential reconstructions, has confirmed that changes in cell locations in a group of cells on the tangential surface caused no change in the total tangential width of the whole group. Mode…
