Analysis, assessment and quantification of the climate changes impact: the resilience silvicultural indicators

Sicilian forests can be considered at high decay risk because of more and more frequent wildfires and, even more, because of climate change effects, like floods, draught, heat waves, snow and wind storms. They are worrying processes, contributing at making ecosystems weaker and intensifying the potential desertification risk in Sicily, one of the most threatened of Italian regions by this form of soil degradation. The most effective approach to mitigate the effects of the climate change has been developed through the following action: analysis, assessment and quantification of the climate change impact: the silvicoltural resilience indicators.

Survey and qualitative description of forest for the Vallombrosa management plan Some short notes with regards to the Vallombrosa forest management plan survey. The new systemic approach to the silviculture needs mainly an accurate description of the stands. The management is based on cultivation partition, where the selection cuttings will be aimed to the renaturalisation of plantation. The survey has been carried out in order to describe in a very detailed way the dynamics of stands natural evolution. Fixed plots have been established in order to monitor the feedback of the forest to the human guide.

Per la peculiarità storica, geografica ed ambientale l’Isola di Lampedusa, e vista l’estrema frammentarietà delle formazioni preforestali, l’esiguità dei popolamenti (e degli individui) delle specie legnose assumono un valore scientifico e conservazionistico particolarmente elevato. Per queste ragioni è stato fatto un censimento eseguito con strumentazione GPS. The vascular flora has been investigated on about 60 of the approximately 100 islands and islets of the Sicilian archipelago. This paper provides detailed information on the number of exclusive, rare, or threatened vascular plants living on these islands and islets. Focusing on the 18 most-investigated islets, we evaluate the extent to which species richness, rate of endemism, number of alien plants, and number of terrestrial habitats have been influenced by 1) geographical setting, 2) geological history, 3) geo-pedological variability, 4) bioclimate, 5) number and patchiness of local plant communities, and 6) natural and human disturbance history and regime. Diversi studi compiuti negli ultimi anni hanno messo in luce una lunga quanto sottovalutata tradizione nell’uso del legno in generale e di quello di castagno in particolare, in Sicilia e sue isole satelliti (Sala et al., 2020). Altre indagini hanno inoltre confermato le ottime qualità tecnologiche del legno di castagno siciliano (Cruciata et al., 2018; La Mantia et al., 2006a; Maggiore et al., 2006). Meno noto ma altrettanto interessante è l’uso prolungato delle castagne nell’alimentazione; i frutti venivano infatti consumati prevalentemente, ma non esclusivamente, nelle zone montane dell’isola.
