Afforestation and reforestation: the Sicilian case study

In some regions of the world such as the Northern Hemisphere, the abandonment of agricultural land is one of the most widespread forms of land use change. In general, abandonment is followed by colonization by herbaceous and woody plants. Since the 1950s, wide areas of Southern Italy have been afforested for soil conservation improvement. In order to quantify the effects of agricultural abandonment and artificial afforestation on soil organic carbon (SOC), a dataset of 48 Sicilian sites has been analyzed. Assessing the quality of dissolved organic matter in forest soils using ultraviolet absorption spectrophotometry

Abbreviations: DOC, dissolved organic carbon; SUVA, specifi c ultraviolet absorbance; UV, ultraviolet. Ultraviolet spectrophotometry was used to investigate the effects, 30 yr after planting, of tree species substitution on the aromatic C content and related properties of dissolved organic carbon (DOC). Precautions were taken to correct measurements for the absorbance of NO 3 and dissolved Fe. In litter leachates, a signifi cant reduction in the aromatic content of DOC was found in the Douglas-fi r [Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Weed vegetation of cereal crops in Tajikistan (Pamir Alai Mts., Middle Asia)

The paper presents results of investigations of weed vegetation conducted in crop fields, in Tajikistan (Middle Asia) - one of the world cradles of the weed flora. The study has been based on 299 phytosociological relevés obtained in various geobotanical regions of the country in 2009-2012. In the examined vegetation patches 469 vascular plant species were noted. Many of the recorded species are widespread weeds. However, there were also some rare and endemics taxa (e.g. Prangos pabularia, P. saraw-schanica and Thlaspidium thlaspi) observed in the sample plots. Using uncertain preferential information from stakeholders to assess the acceptability of alternative forest management plans

In forest management planning, participatory planning processes are often encouraged as a means to acquire relevant information and to enhance the stakeholders' acceptability of alternative plans. This requires the aggregation of the stakeholders' preferences that can be done in a wide variety of manners. The aggregation process strives to reduce the information into a single set of preferences that simplifies the information and allows for the use of discrete decision support tools. Effects of integrating a bioethanol production process to a kraft pulp mill

Abstract The integration of an ethanol production process based on prehydrolysis of softwood chips to a kraft pulp mill is discussed. A simulation model of this biorefinery has been created with WinGEMS simulation software to calculate the mass and energy balances of the biorefinery and to examine the effects of the integration on the operation of the pulp mill. Integrating the prehydrolysis process to the modeled pulp mill producing 1000 Adt/day of pine pulp would increase the wood consumption by 16%. Simultaneous optimization of harvest schedule and measurement strategy

In many recent studies, the value of forest inventory information in the harvest scheduling has been examined. Usually only the profitability of measuring simultaneously all the stands in the area is examined. Yet, it may be more profitable to concentrate the measurement efforts to some subset of them. In this paper, the authors demonstrate that stochastic optimization can be used for defining the optimal measurement strategy simultaneously with the harvest decisions.
