On utilizing an enhanced object partitioning scheme to optimize self-organizing lists-on-lists
2020
With the advent of “Big Data” as a field, in and of itself, there are at least three fundamentally new questions that have emerged, namely the Artificially Intelligence (AI)-based algorithms required, the hardware to process the data, and the methods to store and access the data efficiently. This paper (The work of the second author was partially supported by NSERC, the Natural Sciences and Engineering Council of Canada. We are very grateful for the feedback from the anonymous Referees of the original submission. Their input significantly improved the quality of this final version.) presents some novel schemes for the last of the three areas. There have been thousands of papers written rega…
The Redesigned Serpens, a Low-Cost, Highly Compliant Snake Robot†
2022
The term perception-driven obstacle-aided locomotion (POAL) was proposed to describe locomotion in which a snake robot leverages a sensory-perceptual system to exploit the surrounding operational environment and to identify walls, obstacles, or other structures as a means of propulsion. To attain POAL from a control standpoint, the accurate identification of push-points and reliable determination of feasible contact reaction forces are required. This is difficult to achieve with rigidly actuated robots because of the lack of compliance. As a possible solution to this challenge, our research group recently presented Serpens, a low-cost, open-source, and highly compliant multi-purpose modular…

This paper proposes an active learning scheme to detect multiple faults in permanent magnet synchronous motors in dynamic operations without using historical labelled faulty training data. The proposed method combines the self-supervised anomaly detector based on a local outlier factor…
RMS Based Health Indicators for Remaining Useful Lifetime Estimation of Bearings
2022
Estimating the remaining useful life (RUL) of bearings from healthy to faulty is important for predictive maintenance. The bearing fault severity can be estimated based on the energy or root mean square (RMS) of vibration signals, and a stopping criterion can be set based on a threshold given by an ISO standard. However, the vibration RMS is often not monotonically increasing with damage, which renders a challenge for predicting the RUL. This study proposes a novel method for splitting the vibration signal into multiple frequency bands before RMS calculations to generate multiple health indicators. Monotonic health indicators are identified using the Spearman coefficient, and the RUL is aft…
Comparison of Fractional-Order and Integer-Order H-infinity Control of a Non-Collocated Two-Mass Oscillator
2022
We consider the robust control of a two-mass oscillator with a dominant input delay. Our aim is to compare a fractional-order tuning approach including the partial compensation of non-minimum phase zeros with a classical H∞ loop-shaping design, since both these designs lead to a relatively high controller order. First of all a detailed physical model is derived and validated using measurement data. Based on the line arized model both controllers are designed to be comparable, i.e. they show a similar crossover frequency in the open loop and the final controller order is reduced to the same range for both designs. The major differences between both are the different methods how the feed-forw…
E-learning in corporate training using interactive courses
2017
Master's thesis Multimedia and Educational Technology MM500 - University of Agder 2017 Health, safety, and environment (HSE) is an important term in industrial- and corporate context. A company focusing on their employees sharing the same values and attitudes regarding HSE can experience a working environment where employees feels safe, and perform their work without unnecessary risk-taking. There are often seen examples where HSE training relies on traditional classroom teaching, and keeps the focus on “do’s and “don’ts”, but the key to get employees to share a common goal on HSE, is to provide a deeper meaning for each employee on what this term actually mean. The purpose of this research…
Simulations of networked critical infrastructures
2018
Master's thesis Information- and communication technology IKT590 - University of Agder 2018 Critical infrastructure (CI) refers to assets that are essential for the functioning of a society and economy, such as telecommunication/ICT; energy generation, transmission and distribution; financial sector; etc. CIs are tightly coupled, creating a complex system where failures propagate from a disrupted CI to other CIs, aggravating and prolonging the societal impact through cascading effects. This thesis extends a system dynamic model by Eliza Canzani describing how a failed critical infrastructure that cannot deliver products and services impacts other critical infrastructures, and how a critical…
Ausencias relevantes en la teoria del curriculum.
2020
Some significant absences are pointed out in the article about the way in which the theory has been confronting the curriculum, with special emphasis on what happene…
The paper analyzes the legal nature of the information activity of the State within the framework of a cooperative Administration that uses information to achieve public purposes. Likewise, this informative activity is studied from the two classical perspectives as material activity and informal activity of a more German character.
