Histone acetylation deficits in lymphoblastoid cell lines from patients with Rubinstein-Taybi syndrome.
2012
Background: Rubinstein-Taybi syndrome (RSTS) is a congenital neurodevelopmental disorder defined by postnatal growth deficiency, characteristic skeletal abnormalities and mental retardation and caused by mutations in the genes encoding for the transcriptional co-activators with intrinsic lysine acetyltransferase (KAT) activity CBP and p300. Previous studies have shown that neuronal histone acetylation is reduced in mouse models of RSTS. Methods: The authors identified different mutations at the CREBBP locus and generated lymphoblastoid cell lines derived from nine patients with RSTS carrying distinct CREBBP mutations that illustrate different grades of the clinical severity in the spectrum …
The Use of Hall's Technique Preformed Metal Crown (HTPMC) by Pediatric Dentists in Malaysia
2021
Introduction. Hall’s technique preformed metal crown (HTPMC) has been used widely by pediatric dentists in developed countries as a new approach for managing decayed primary molars without local anesthesia, caries removal, and tooth preparation. Currently, inadequate information is available regarding the implementation of this technique (HTPMC) in Malaysia. This study is aimed at evaluating the implementation of HTPMC by Malaysia’s pediatric dentists and identify the co-occurrence frequencies of the HTPMC implementation with the respondents’ demographic profile. Materials and Methods. A cross-sectional questionnaire-based research was conducted among 65 pediatric dentists in Malaysia. Onli…
Conflicting rationales: leader's experienced ethical challenges in community health care for older people.
2017
BACKGROUND Ethical challenges arise in all types of care, and leaders need to be aware of how to resolve these challenges. Healthcare systems tend to be organised around medical conditions, and the patient is often faced with a series of uncoordinated visits to multiple specialties. Ideally, care should be organised around the patient's needs. AIM The purpose of this article was to highlight some ethical challenges perceived by leaders with responsibility for management and service distribution, finance and ensuring quality of community health services for older people. METHOD This study had a qualitative design with a qualitative content analysis of one focus group with six leaders that me…
Real-time, ultrasound-guided infraclavicular axillary vein cannulation for renal replacement therapy in the critical care unit—A prospective interven…
2015
Abstract Purpose The cannulation of the axillary vein for renal replacement therapy is a rarely performed procedure in the critical care unit. We defined the venipuncture and catheterization success rates and early mechanical complication rates of this technique in critical care patients with acute kidney injury. Materials and methods Twenty-nine mechanically ventilated patients with clinical indications for insertion of temporary hemodialysis catheters enrolled in a registered trial (NCT01919528) as a pilot cohort. We performed 29 real-time, ultrasound-guided infraclavicular axillary vein cannulation attempts for renal replacement therapy. We defined the venipuncture and catheterization su…
Improving Diagnostic Performance for Thyroid Nodules Classified as Bethesda Category III or IV: How and by Whom Ultrasonography Should be Performed
2020
Background: The purpose of this prospective study is to evaluate if the association of Bethesda system and a 3-categories Ultrasonography (US) risk stratification system proposed by the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists/American College of Endocrinology/Associazione Medici Endocrinologi improves the performance of cytology alone in III or IV categories and if further variables such as US provider (radiologist; endocrinologist, or endocrine surgeon both coming from a dedicated team) influence the accuracy of the diagnostic. Methods: 570 consecutive patients with complete clinical records, affected by Bethesda III or IV nodules, have been addressed to two public referral surgi…
Conflicts in language processing: A new perspective on the N400-P600 distinction
2011
Conflicts in language processing often correlate with late positive event-related brain potentials (ERPs), particularly when they are induced by inconsistencies between different information types (e.g. syntactic and thematic/plausibility information). However, under certain circumstances, similar sentence-level interpretation conflicts (inanimate subjects) engender negativity effects (N400s) instead. The present ERP study was designed to shed light on this inconsistency. In previous studies showing monophasic positivities (P600s), the conflict was irresolvable and induced via a verb. whereas N400s were elicited by resolvable, argument-induced conflicts. Here, we therefore examined irresolv…
The effects of informed consent format on preoperative anxiety in patients undergoing inferior third molar surgery
2013
Objectives: To evaluate the effect of informed consent format on preoperative anxiety of patients. Material and Methods: We performed a prospective study (91 patients) undergoing lower third molar extraction. Patients were distributed into three groups. Informed consent for surgery was obtained through a written document, an oral interview or a video recording. Afterwards, patients were asked about their anxiety level and the effect the informed consent had had on it. Results: Whereas the information conveyed both in oral and written formats relieved the patient to some extent (in a scale of -3 to +3) 0.97±1.21 and 0.29±0.97, respectively), the video recording increased patient’s anxiety in…
Cigarette Smoking Status at Diagnosis and Recurrence in Intermediate-risk Nonemuscle-invasive Bladder Carcinoma
2013
Objective To study the effect of smoking status at diagnosis on recurrence in intermediate-risk non–muscle-invasive bladder carcinoma treated by transurethral resection (TUR) of the bladder and early intravesical chemotherapy. Methods Tumor characteristics and smoking status were recorded in 395 patients entered in a randomized multicenter trial comparing 2 different schedules of early intravesical chemotherapy. All patients received intravesical epirubicin (80 mg/50 mL) within 6 hours after TUR, followed by 5 more weekly instillations with (arm B) or without (arm A) monthly instillations for 1 year. Smoking habit was investigated at diagnosis through a structured questionnaire. Multivariat…
Prognosis of Patients Listed for a Heart Transplant During the Pretransplant Period: Does Diabetes Matter?
2013
Whether patients with advanced heart failure and diabetes mellitus (DM) should be listed for heart transplantation (HTx) remains controversial due to conflicting findings regarding their post-HTx survival (1–3). We studied HTx candidates with and without DM during the pre-HTx period, examining multiple waiting list outcomes. Patients were enrolled in the Waiting for a New Heart Study, a multisite observational study of 318 adult (≥18 years of age) patients (aged 53 ± 11 years; 18% female) who were newly listed for HTx with Eurotransplant between April 2005 and December 2006 (4). Informed consent and ethics approval were obtained (4). Characteristics at the time of listing included age, DM, …
Depression during an acute episode of schizophrenia or schizophreniform disorder and its impact on treatment response
2008
The aim of the present study was to examine the relevance of depressive symptoms during an acute schizophrenic episode for the prediction of treatment response. Two hundred inpatients who fulfilled DSM-IV criteria for schizophrenia or schizophreniform disorders were assessed at hospital admission and after 6 weeks of inpatient treatment using the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) and the Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression (HAM-D). Depressive symptoms showed positive correlations with both positive and negative symptoms at admission and after 6 weeks, and decreased during 6 weeks of treatment. Pronounced depressive symptoms (HAM-D score> or =16) were found in 28% of the sample a…
