1995

The starting claim of this paper is that it is not accidental that in Catalan, as in Spanish, invariable nominals regarding number end in the same form as the regular plural marker, i.e., s, and thus any analysis willing to explain these words has to take this fact into account. Under this assumption, different proposals are evaluated: the existence of a `zero'-plural morph, the blocking of s (plural marker)-insertion, the deletion of s-plural marker, the ambimorphic interpretation of -s+s, the unspecified blocking of one of the two ss, and the deletion of the s-stem. The latter analysis is favoured, except for compounds whose second element is already plural, in which case the ambimorphic …

Empirical evidence of non-linearity in bottom-up effect in a marine predator-prey system

2022

Strength of species interaction may have profound effects on population dynamics. Empirical estimates of interaction strength is often based on the assumption that the interaction strengths are constant. Barents Sea cod and capelin are two fish populations for which such interaction has been acknowledged and used, under the assumption of constant interaction strength, when studying their population dynamics. However, species interaction can often be non-linear in marine ecosystems and might profoundly change our understanding of food chains. Analysing 37 years long survey time series in the Arcto-Boreal Barents Sea with a state-space modelling framework, we demonstrate that the effect of ca…

Influence of fish aggregating devices (FADs) on anti-predator behaviour within experimental mesocosms

2015

Commercial fishers have used fish aggregating devices throughout the Mediterranean Sea for over 40 years. These devices attract numerous predatory and forage species in both coastal and offshore environments. This study examined the influence of fish aggregating devices on schooling and aggregating behaviour by small forage fish in quasi-natural mesocosms. Anti-predator behaviour was evaluated for juvenile Caranx crysos under a variety of treatment conditions. Results suggest that, in the absence of physical structure, C. crysos first respond to a predatory threat by forming a school. When a physical structure is present, however, C. crysos show an occasional tendency to aggregate near the …

Scavenging in the realm of senses: smell and vision drive recruitment at carcasses in Neotropical ecosystems

2022

Social information, acquired through the observation of other individuals, is especially relevant among species belonging to the same guild. The unpredictable and ephemeral nature of carrion implies that social mechanisms may be selected among scavenger species to facilitate carcass location and consumption. Here, we apply a survival-modelling strategy to data obtained through the placement and monitoring of carcasses in the field to analyse possible information transmission cascades within a Neotropical scavenger community. Our study highlights how the use of different senses (smell and sight) within this guild facilitates carcass location through the transmission of social information bet…

Angular roughshark Oxynotus centrina (Squaliformes: Oxynotidae) in captivity feeding exclusively on elasmobranch eggs: an overlooked feeding niche or…

2015

A specimen of angular roughshark Oxynotus centrina has been kept successfully in captivity for the first time. Over a period of 24 months, the specimen preyed exclusively on the contents of elasmobranch egg cases, suggesting a specialized trophic niche.

Ripensare i territori metropolitani. Forme e processi di pressione insediativa sui sistemi di interesse naturale

2013

Dimers of the Higher-Energy Conformer of Formic Acid: Experimental Observation

2012

We report on the first experimental observation of formic acid dimers composed of two molecules of the higher-energy cis conformer. The cis–cis formic acid dimers are prepared in an argon matrix by selective vibrational excitation of the ground state trans conformer (deuterated form HCOOD) combined with thermal annealing of the matrix at about 30 K. Five cis–cis formic acid dimers are predicted by ab initio calculations (interaction energies from −16.9 to −27.2 kJ molˉ¹), and these structures are used for the assignment of the experimental spectra. Selective vibrational excitation of the obtained cis–cis dimers leads to the formation of several trans–cis dimers, which supports the proposed …
