Religiosi e “geometrie dell’impero”. Teorie e pratiche fortificatorie tra Mediterraneo e Atlantico

2018

Between the end of the fifteenth century and the beginning of the sixteenth, the changes in the military technology - mainly related to the spread of firearms - implied a re-elaboration of the fortification construction theories and, consequently, a practical experimentation aimed at the identification of architectural models capable to make the border areas safe and impregnable. Far from involving only a small circle of "men of arms", the debate about the “new art of the war” involved men whose formation can not be traced back to a specific type. Clearly emerges a fact: the involvement of ecclesiastics also as "technicians" for the design of defensive structures, was not a marginal phenome…

Mixed Non-Parametric and Parametric Estimation Techniques in R Package etasFLP for Earthquakes’ Description

2017

etasFLP is an R package which fits an epidemic type aftershock sequence (ETAS) model to an earthquake catalog; non-parametric background seismicity can be estimated through a forward predictive likelihood approach, while parametric components of triggered seismicity are estimated through maximum likelihood; estimation steps are alternated until convergence is obtained and for each event the probability of being a background event is estimated. The package includes options which allow its wide use. Methods for plot, summary and profile are defined for the main output class object. The paper provides examples of the package's use with description of the underlying R and Fortran routines.

dglars: An R Package to Estimate Sparse Generalized Linear Models

2014

dglars is a publicly available R package that implements the method proposed in Augugliaro, Mineo, and Wit (2013), developed to study the sparse structure of a generalized linear model. This method, called dgLARS, is based on a differential geometrical extension of the least angle regression method proposed in Efron, Hastie, Johnstone, and Tibshirani (2004). The core of the dglars package consists of two algorithms implemented in Fortran 90 to efficiently compute the solution curve: a predictor-corrector algorithm, proposed in Augugliaro et al. (2013), and a cyclic coordinate descent algorithm, proposed in Augugliaro, Mineo, and Wit (2012). The latter algorithm, as shown here, is significan…

New eudesmane derivatives fromArtemisia tournefortiana

1990

Extraction of the aerial parts of Artemisia tournefortiana Reichb. yields a new cis-eudesmanolide 4 and three new eudesmane acids 7, 8, and 10, together with several known compounds. Their structures were deduced by spectroscopic and chemical methods.

Il rafforzamento dell'apparato difensivo della Sicilia nella prima età vicereale.

2009

During the period 1480 to 1530 the Sicilian system of fortifications is intimately connected to the role and political importance of the island in its relationship to the rest of the European States. It is also linked to its position in the context of the Mediterranean countries. In the first case its role is marginal. In the second case it is strategically immensely important given the ongoing conflict with the Ottoman Empire that makes it indispensable for Sicily to keep its defensive mechanism in good working order. At the same time it needs to respond effectively to the relentless advancement and development of new weaponry. At the end of the 15th century building works are only limited…

Quantum Nanoplasmonic : from dressed atom picture to superradiance

2019

Controlling quantum emitters (atoms, molecules, quantum dots, etc.), light, and its interactions is a key issue for implementing devices for information optical processing at the quantum level. For example, controlling dynamics of emitters coupled to a high-Q cavity can be achieved through cavity quantum electrodynamics (cQED). Plasmonic structures hybrid system are of growing interest in the quantum control at the nanoscale because of their capability to confine light beyond the diffraction limit. However, its application appears notoriously limited in practical situations due to the intrinsic presence of numerous and lossy modes, which complicates the description and the interpretation of…

Algorithms for the calculation of the view factors between human body and rectangular surfaces in parallelepiped environments

1992

Abstract The thermal comfort conditions for people in moderate thermal environments are subjected to spatial changes, depending on the radiative exchanges of the human body with the surrounding surfaces. Radiative thermal exchanges are notably accounted for by means of the “view factors” between a person in a given posture and the surface of the enclosure. These important parameters can be evaluated by means of a large set of graphs by Fanger, for rectangular surfaces. But the handling of graphs could lead to reading errors. In this paper a simple algorithm is presented, which is able to compute the required view factors. A validation, by means of a comparison against experimental data, is …

Evaluation of the Thermodynamic Performance of the Traditional Passive Systems

2011

The need to reduce urban consumption of energy in the buildings, one of the major energy waster resulting in emission of CO2, is pushing research in the field of building design to the appreciation of passive air-conditioning systems that can be integrated with conventional systems and determine, therefore, the so-called hybrid systems. Historically this passive systems were developed in the Mediterranean and in the Middle East area. Actually the research activity has been focused on this problem, through an approach that involves the application of design strategies and the development of computational tools and control systems. The synergy between current scientific knowledge, advanced ma…
