"Phonebloks, or a phone developed by its future users" : user experiences of a forum for a modular phone concept

2016

In late 2013, a project caught my attention as being interesting to me and potentially a lot of others, innovative, and environmentally friendly: a smartphone project called Phonebloks. This timing fitting perfectly with the start of my Master's thesis as well as my personal interests, I observed it to see how it would develop. The official website which was created let users debate in order to decide where this Phonebloks project should go, so I decided to focus my efforts on it. This thesis describes perceptions of users regarding an online forum about a new kind of phone, called Phonebloks. On this forum they can debate about the future of the phone. I based my analysis on research on fo…

Corpus-driven insights into the discourse of women survivors of Intimate Partner Violence

2018

Despite its ubiquity, Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) is still under-researched from a Critical Discourse Studies (CDS) perspective. Thus, this paper investigates the discourse of women survivors of IPV focusing on a corpus-driven examination of the data. This is done after applying the text-analysis software tool LIWC (Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count) to a 120,000-word corpus collected from an anonymised, public, online forum available to IPV survivors. I contrast a plethora of linguistic phenomena in three online communities embedded within this forum (‘Is it Abuse?’, ‘Getting out’ and ‘Life after abuse’) in the attempt to sketch out how the discursive output varies across these three s…

Engagement as a Driver of Growth of Online Health Forums: Observational Study

2017

Background: The emerging research on nurturing the growth of online communities posits that it is in part attributed to network effects, wherein every increase in the volume of user-generated content increases the value of the community in the eyes of its potential new members. The recently introduced metric engagement capacity offers a means of quantitatively assessing the ability of online platform users to engage each other into generating content; meanwhile, the quantity engagement value is useful for quantifying communication-based platform use. If the claim that higher engagement leads to accelerated growth holds true for online health forums (OHFs), then engagement tracking should be…

Submicrometer-Sized Roughness Suppresses Bacteria Adhesion.

2020

Biofilm formation is most commonly combatted with antibiotics or biocides. However, proven toxicity and increasing resistance of bacteria increase the need for alternative strategies to prevent adhesion of bacteria to surfaces. Chemical modification of the surfaces by tethering of functional polymer brushes or films provides a route toward antifouling coatings. Furthermore, nanorough or superhydrophobic surfaces can delay biofilm formation. Here we show that submicrometer-sized roughness can outweigh surface chemistry by testing the adhesion of E. coli to surfaces of different topography and wettability over long exposure times (>7 days). Gram-negative and positive bacterial strains are tes…

Grafiskā identitāte kino industrijā

2020

Online Hate Speech in the European Union : A Discourse-Analytic Perspective

2017

This book is open access under a CC BY 4.0 license and reports on research carried out as part of the European Union co-funded C.O.N.T.A.C.T. project which targeted hate speech and hate crime across a number of EU member states. It showcases the bearing that discourse analytic research can have on our understanding of this phenomenon that is a growing global cause for concern. Although ‘hate speech’ is often incorporated in legal and policy documents, there is no universally accepted definition, which in itself warrants research into how hatred is both expressed and perceived. The research project synthesises discourse analytic and corpus linguistics techniques, and presents its key finding…

The MAVS Immune Recognition Pathway in Viral Infection and Sepsis.

2021

Significance: It is estimated that close to 50 million cases of sepsis result in over 11 million annual fatalities worldwide. The pathognomonic feature of sepsis is a dysregulated inflammatory response arising from viral, bacterial, or fungal infections. Immune recognition of pathogen-associated molecular patterns is a hallmark of the host immune defense to combat microbes and to prevent the progression to sepsis. Mitochondrial antiviral signaling protein (MAVS) is a ubiquitous adaptor protein located at the outer mitochondrial membrane, which is activated by the cytosolic pattern recognition receptors, retinoic acid-inducible gene I (RIG-I) and melanoma differentiation associated gene 5 (M…
