Time-Resolved Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy on the Inter- and Intramolecular Orientational Dynamics in Ferroelectric Liquid Crystalline Dim…

1997

On a base of time-resolved step-scan IR-spectroscopy data, we present a detailed model of the segmental reorientation during the ferroelectric and electroclinic switching of a chiral liquid crystalline dimer. We detected that the magnitude of the motion of the molecular segments differ from each other: The tilt angle is maximal for the mesogens and minimal for the ``virtual polysiloxane backbone.'' In contrast to a recently published conjecture, we prove that in the \ensuremath{\mu}s scale the responses of different molecular segments are unambiguously synchronous with each other.

Production and Characterization of Oxyhydroxyapatites

2018

The amount and alignment of hydroxyl ions influence the bioactivity of hydroxyapatite. Hydroxyl ions in hydroxyapatite are the most mobile and upon heating are the first to leave the lattice to form oxyhydroxyapatite. This work describes a method for producing hydroxyapatite with different amounts of hydroxyl ions, and reports on the changes in Fourier transform infrared absorption at increasing level of dehydroxylation. Detailed analysis of spectra in the 500 – 700 cm-1 range showed a peak shift for the hydroxyl ion absorption line at 632 cm-1 to 637 cm-1 and an increase in the wavenumber for the phosphate line at 575 cm-1.

Hydrothermal Processing for Increasing the Hydroxyl Ion Concentration in Hydroxyl Depleted Hydroxyapatite

2018

Thermal spraying is commercially used to produce hydroxyapatite coatings, but the high temperature depletes hydroxyl ions in the structure. To return hydroxyapatite to its original state, it is necessary to restore the hydroxyl ion content in the structure. In this work, the effect of hydrothermal treatment on the hydroxyl ions was investigated in hydroxyapatite powder and thermally sprayed hydroxyapatite coatings. Samples were hydrothermally treated at 200 °C for 24 h and 48 h. Chemical phases were determined by X-ray diffraction, functional groups and hydroxyl ion concentration was examined by Fourier transform infra-red spectroscopy. Results showed that hydrothermal processing of hydroxy…

Engineered Membranes for Residual Cell Trapping on Microfluidic Blood Plasma Separation Systems: A Comparison between Porous and Nanofibrous Membranes

2021

Blood-based clinical diagnostics require challenging limit-of-detection for low abundance, circulating molecules in plasma. Micro-scale blood plasma separation (BPS) has achieved remarkable results in terms of plasma yield or purity, but rarely achieving both at the same time. Here, we proposed the first use of electrospun polylactic-acid (PLA) membranes as filters to remove residual cell population from continuous hydrodynamic-BPS devices. The membranes hydrophilicity was improved by adopting a wet chemistry approach via surface aminolysis as demonstrated through Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy and Water Contact Angle analysis. The usability of PLA-membranes was assessed through de…

In vitro degradation and bioactivity of composite poly-l-lactic (PLLA)/bioactive glass (BG) scaffolds: comparison of 45S5 and 1393BG compositions

2017

The objective of this study was to compare the effect of two bioglass (BG) compositions 45S5 and 1393 in poly-l-lactic composite scaffolds in terms of morphology, mechanical properties, biodegradation, water uptake and bioactivity. The scaffolds were produced via thermally induced phase separation starting from a ternary polymer solution (polymer/solvent/non-solvent). Furthermore, different BG to polymer ratios have been selected (1, 2.5, 5% wt/wt) to evaluate the effect of the amount of filler on the composite structure. Results show that the addition of 1393BG does not affect the scaffold morphology, whereas the 45S5BG at the highest amount tends to appreciably modify the scaffold archite…

Novel Au NPs/Preyssler acid/TiO 2 nanocomposite for the photocatalytic removal of azo dye

2014

Abstract In this study, we introduced a novel nanocomposite consisting of Au nanoparticles decorated TiO 2 and Preyssler acid as a multifunctional photocatalyst linker molecule, in which gold ions reduced locally on the TiO 2 surface. The obtained nanocomposite has been characterized using Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Electron Dispersive X-ray (EDX) Spectroscopy, Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). Also, their photocatalytic activity has been studied for the degradation of model organic azo dye Malachite Green under UV light irradiation.

ZnWO4 nanocrystals: synthesis, morphology, photoluminescence and photocatalytic properties

2018

The present joint experimental and theoretical work provides in-depth understanding on the morphology and structural, electronic, and optical properties of ZnWO4 nanocrystals. Monoclinic ZnWO4 nanocrystals were prepared at three different temperatures (140, 150, and 160 °C) by a microwave hydrothermal method. Then, the samples were investigated by X-ray diffraction with Rietveld refinement analysis, field-emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electronic microscopy, micro-Raman and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, and photoluminescence measurements. First-principles theoretical calculations within the framework of density functional the…

Synthesis of cubic ZnS microspheres exhibiting broad visible emission for bioimaging applications

2015

Biocompatible ZnS microspheres with an average diameter of 3.85 µm were grown by solvo-hydrothermal (S-H) method using water-acetonitrile-ethylenediamine (EDA) solution combination. ZnS microspheres were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), Fourier transform (FT)-Raman spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) techniques. The broad photoluminescence (PL) emissions from 380-580 nm that were seen from the ZnS microspheres attributed to the increase in carrier concentration, as understood from the observed intense Raman band at 257 cm(-1). Cytotoxicity and haemocompatibility…

Effect of hydroxyapatite concentration and size on morpho-mechanical properties of PLA-based randomly oriented and aligned electrospun nanofibrous ma…

2019

The growing demand for nanofibrous biocomposites able to provide peculiar properties requires systematic investigations of processing-structure-property relationships. Understanding the morpho-mechanical properties of an electrospun scaffold as a function of the filler features and mat microstructure can aid in designing these systems. In this work, the reinforcing effect of micrometric and nanometric hydroxyapatite particles in polylactic acid-based electrospun scaffold presenting random and aligned fibers orientation, was evaluated. The particles incorporation was investigated trough Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy in attenuated total reflectance. The morphology of the nanofibers …

A simple interpretation of the effect of the polymer type on the properties of PMBs for road paving applications

2018

Abstract The paper presents the results of the rheological characterisation of polymer-modified bitumen for paving applications. In order to find a simple interpretation of the influence of polymer type on the blends produced, in this study high density and low density polyethylene (PE) with different chemical properties were used, as well as ethylene-vinyl acetate. The chemical characteristics of the base bitumen and the polymers used were determined by means of SARA analysis and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy, FTIR, respectively. The morphology of the produced blends was investigated by means of fluorescent light optic microscopy, while the mechanical properties were investigated…
