Entropy of glassy polymer melts: Comparison between Gibbs-DiMarzio theory and simulation.

1996

We calculate the free energy of a model for a polymer melt in a computer simulation of the bond-fluctuation model and determine the entropy of the melt over a wide range of temperatures, including the region close to the glass transition. The results are compared with the Gibbs-DiMarzio theory, a theory by Flory for semiflexible polymers, and a modification of their theories due to Milchev. We can describe the data within the framework of the Flory theory with Milchev's correction and discuss the consequences for the understanding of the glass transition. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.

Lack of nucleophilic addition in the isoxazole and pyrazole diketone modified analogs of curcumin; implications for their antitumor and chemosensitiz…

2009

Curcumin (CUR) can be considered as a good lead compound for the design of new anticancer drugs. Further, structure-activity relationship studies may clarify the importance of the redox activities in the antitumor effects of the drug. We have elaborated the alpha,beta-unsaturated 1,3-diketone moiety of CUR into the isoxazole (ISO) and pyrazole (PYR) derivatives. These derivatives should be much less prone to nucleophilic addition than CUR and benzyl mercaptan addition analyses showed that indeed they do not form isolable conjugated products. When compared with CUR, ISO and PYR exhibited increased cell growth inhibitory and pro-apoptotic effects in liver cancer HA22T/VGH cells as well as in …

FOXP3 Inhibitory Peptide P60 Increases Efficacy of Cytokine-induced Killer Cells Against Renal and Pancreatic Cancer Cells

2019

Background/aim Cytokine-induced killer (CIK) cells are ex vivo expanded major histocompatibility complex (MHC)-unrestricted cytotoxic cells with promising effects against a variety of cancer types. Regulatory T-cells (T-reg) have been shown to reduce the effectiveness of CIK cells against tumor cells. Peptide P60 has been shown to inhibit the immunosuppressive functions of T-regs. This study aimed at examining the effect of p60 on CIK cells efficacy against renal and pancreatic cancer cells. Materials and methods The effect of P60 on CIK cytotoxicity was examined using flow cytometry, WST-8-based cell viability assay and interferon γ (IFNγ) ELISA. Results P60 treatment resulted in a signifi…

DNA oxidation products determined with repair endonucleases in mammalian cells: Types, basal levels and influence of cell proliferation

1999

Purified repair endonucleases such as Fpg protein, endonuclease III and IV allow a very sensitive quantification of various types of oxidative DNA modifications in mammalian cells. By means of these assays, the numbers of base modifications sensitive to Fpg protein, which include 8-hydroxyguanine (8-oxoG), were determined to be less than 0.3 per 10(6) bp in several types of untreated cultured mammalian cells and human lymphocytes and less than 10 per 10(6) bp in mitochondrial DNA from rat and porcine liver. Oxidative 5,6-dihydropyrimidine derivatives sensitive to endonuclease III and sites of base loss sensitive to endonuclease IV or exonuclease III were much less frequent than Fpg-sensitiv…

Aeromonas hydrophila subsp. dhakensis isolated from feces, water and fish in Mediterranean Spain.

2012

Eight Aeromonas hydrophila-like arabinose-negative isolates from diverse sources (i.e., river freshwater, cooling-system water pond, diseased wild European eels, and human stools) sampled in Valencia (Spain) during 2004-2005, were characterized by 16S rRNA gene sequencing and extensive biochemical testing along with reference strains of most Aeromonas species. These isolates and all reference strains of A. hydrophila subsp. dhakensis and A. aquariorum showed a 16S rRNA sequence similarity of 99.8-100%, and they all shared an identical phenotype. This matched exactly with that of A. hydrophila subsp. dhakensis since all strains displayed positive responses to the Voges-Prokauer test and to t…

Isolation and characterization of five Fox (Forkhead) genes from the sponge Suberites domuncula.

2003

Fox or Forkhead genes constitute a subgroup of the helix-turn-helix class of transcription factors with a characteristic and highly conserved DNA binding domain. To date, around 100 different Fox genes have been reported ranging from yeast to humans; these have been classified into 18 subclasses (A to P). Fox proteins are responsible for a wide range of functions and key roles in early developmental processes, during organogenesis and also for the function of the major organs and tissues in the adult. Here, we report the isolation and phylogenetic characterization of five members of the Fox family from the sponge Suberites domuncula. Four of them (Sd-FoxL2, Sd-FoxP, Sd-FoxD and Sd-FoxF) fal…

Liquid structure of dibutyl sulfoxide

2016

We present experimental (X-ray diffraction) data on the structure of liquid dibutyl sulfoxide at 320 K and rationalise the data by means of molecular dynamics simulations. Not unexpectedly, DBSO bearing a strong dipolar moiety and two medium length, apolar butyl chains, this compound was characterised by a distinct degree of polar vs. apolar structural differentiation at the nm spatial scale, which was fingerprinted by a low Q peak in its X-ray diffraction pattern. Similar to, but to a larger extent than its shorter chain family members (such as DMSO), DBSO was also characterised by an enhanced dipole-dipole correlation, which was responsible for a moderate Kirkwood correlation factor as we…

Determination of Individual Gibbs Energies of Anion Transfer and Excess Gibbs Energies Using an Electrochemical Method Based on Insertion Electrochem…

2011

A method is presented to determine, individually and with minimal extra-thermodynamic assumptions, the Gibbs energy for anion transfer between two solvents using solid state electrochemistry of alkynyldiphosphine dinuclear Au(I) complexes (AuC2R)2PPh2C6H4PPh2 (L1, R = Fc; L2, R = C6H4Fc) and the heterometallic Au(I)–Cu(I) [{Au3Cu2(C2R)6}Au3(PPh2C6H4PPh2)3](PF6)2 (L3, R = Fc; L4, R = C6H4Fc) cluster complexes containing ferrocenyl units. These compounds exhibit a well-defined, essentially reversible solid-state oxidation in contact with different electrolytes, based on ferrocenyl-centered oxidation processes involving anion insertion. Voltammetric data can be used for a direct measurement of…

Influence of Copper(II) and Nickel(II) Ions in the Topology of Systems Based on a Flexible Bis-Oxamate and Bipyridine Building Blocks

2014

Single crystals of the mononuclear bis-oxamate nickel(II) complex [Ni(bipy)(H2edpba)]·dmso (1) are obtained by reacting [Ni(bipy)Cl2]·H2O and the flexible K2(H2edpba) ligand [bipy = 2,2′-bipyridine; H4edpba = N,N′-2,2′-ethylenediphenylenebis(oxamic acid)]. The reaction of 1 with copper(II) ions resulted in two products in which the replacement of the nickel(II) ion by copper(II) took place: the chain compound [Cu(bipy)(H2edpba)]n·3nH2O·ndmso [dmso = dimethyl sulfoxide] (2) and the analogous chain compound without dmso crystallization molecules [Cu(bipy)(H2edpba)]n·1.5nH2O (3a) in its polycrystalline form. The reaction of [Cu(bipy)Cl2] and K2(H2edpba) yielded single crystals of [Cu(bipy)(H2e…

Slow Relaxation of the Magnetization in Anilato-Based Dy(III) 2D Lattices.

2021

The search for two- and three-dimensional materials with slow relaxation of the magnetization (single-ion magnets, SIM and single-molecule magnets, SMM) has become a very active area in recent years. Here we show how it is possible to prepare two-dimensional SIMs by combining Dy(III) with two different anilato-type ligands (dianions of the 3,6-disubstituted-2,5-dihydroxy-1,4-benzoquinone: C6O4X22−, with X = H and Cl) in dimethyl sulfoxide (dmso). The two compounds prepared, formulated as: [Dy2(C6O4H2)3(dmso)2(H2O)2]·2dmso·18H2O (1) and [Dy2(C6O4Cl2)3(dmso)4]·2dmso·2H2O (2) show distorted hexagonal honeycomb layers with the solvent molecules (dmso and H2O) located in the interlayer space and…
