The detailed study of the oxidation of thianthrene 5-oxide (1) with methyl(trifluoromethyl)dioxirane (5b) in different solvents and in the presence of (18)O isotopic tracers is reported. Thianthrene 5-oxide (1) is a flexible molecule in solution, and this property allows for transannular interaction of the sulfoxide group with the expected zwitterionic 7 and hypervalent 10-S-4 sulfurane 9 intermediates formed in the oxidation and biases the course of the reaction toward the monooxygenation pathway.

The first syntheses of chiral 3- and 2-vinylindoles bearing sulfoxide or (-)-menthyloxy functional groups at the β-vinyl positions by way of procedures based on the Horner-Wadsworth-Emmons and Wittig reactions, respectively, are described. Some Diels-Alder reactions demonstrating the 4π-reactivity of these compounds are reported.

Dioxomolybdenum(VI) complexes of hydrazone phenolate ligands -syntheses and activities in catalytic oxidation reactions

The new cis-dioxomolybdenum(VI) complexes [MoO2(L2)(H2O)] (2) and [MoO2(L3) (H2O)] (3) containing the tridentate hydrazone-based ligands (H2L2 = N'-(3,5-di-tert-butyl-2-hydroxybenzylidene)-4-methylbenzohydrazide and H2L3 = N'-(2-hydroxybenzylidene)-2-(hydroxyimino)propanehydrazide) have been synthesised and characterized via IR, 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis.
