Novel Insights into the Cellular Localization and Regulation of the Autophagosomal Proteins LC3A, LC3B and LC3C
2020
Macroautophagy is a conserved degradative process for maintaining cellular homeostasis and plays a key role in aging and various human disorders. The microtubule-associated protein 1A/1B light chain 3B (MAP1LC3B or LC3B) is commonly analyzed as a key marker for autophagosomes and as a proxy for autophagic flux. Three paralogues of the LC3 gene exist in humans: LC3A, LC3B and LC3C. The molecular function, regulation and cellular localization of LC3A and LC3C have not been investigated frequently, even if a similar function to that described for LC3B appears likely. Here, we have selectively decapacitated LC3B by three separate strategies in primary human fibroblasts and analyzed the evoked e…

Les victimes de viol devant les tribunaux à la fin du Moyen Âge d'après les sources dijonnaises et lyonnaises
2005
At the end of the Middle Ages, the manner in which the courts of justice punished rapists clearly shows how seriously such crimes were judged at that time. Endeavoring to increase their juristic power and worrying that the propagation of rape would corrupt the entire society and threaten its survival, impelled the judges and their officials —princes, bishops, and municipal bodies — to deal with all complaints and to initiate inquiries about them. A study of the progressive steps undertaken in the preliminary investigations of these cases reveals that after an inquiry into the accuser's reputation, the judges demanded numerous proofs from the victim about the rape. Moreover, a clinical exami…
SUBFRACTIONS AND SUBPOPULATIONS OF HDL: AN UPDATE
2014
High-density lipoproteins (HDL) are classified as atheroprotective because they are involved in transport of cholesterol to the liver, known as "reverse cholesterol transport (RCT)" exerting antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. There is also evidence for cytoprotective, vasodilatory, antithrombotic, and anti-infectious activities for these lipoproteins. HDLs are known by structural, metabolic and biologic heterogeneity. Thus, different methods are able to distinguish several subclasses of HDL. Different separation techniques appear to support different HDL fractions as being atheroprotective or related with lower cardiovascular (CV) risk. However, HDL particles are not always prote…
Lipid peroxidation capacities in the myocardium of endurance-trained rats and mice in vitro.
1992
The endurance-training programme in Experiment 1 (Exp. 1) consisted of a total swimming time of 149–159 h per male Han Wistar rat and in Experiment 2 (Exp. 2) the male NMRI-mice run on a treadmill at a speed of 25 m min-1 1 h per day, 5 days a week for 3 weeks. One group of the rat hearts was perfused with 0.3 mm cumene hydroperoxide (CumOOH) while the others were fractioned (mitochondria, sarcolemma and sarcoplasmic reticulum) and these cell fractions and homogenates were used to determine the total concentration of peroxidative lipids and the susceptibility to lipid peroxidation. The perfusion with CumOOH caused the release of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) into the perfu…
The non-neuronal cholinergic system in humans: expression, function and pathophysiology.
2003
Acetylcholine, a prime example of a neurotransmitter, has been detected in bacteria, algae, protozoa, and primitive plants, indicating an extremely early appearance in the evolutionary process (about 3 billion years). In humans, acetylcholine and/or the synthesizing enzyme, choline acetyltransferase (ChAT), have been found in epithelial cells (airways, alimentary tract, urogenital tract, epidermis), mesothelial (pleura, pericardium), endothelial, muscle and immune cells (mononuclear cells, granulocytes, alveolar macrophages, mast cells). The widespread expression of non-neuronal acetylcholine is accompanied by the ubiquitous presence of cholinesterase and receptors (nicotinic, muscarinic). …
The clinical significance of the size of low-density-lipoproteins and the modulation of subclasses by fibrates
2007
Beyond total low-density-lipoproteins (LDL) levels, increasing evidence suggests that the 'quality' of LDL exerts a great influence on the cardiovascular risk. Several studies have also shown that the therapeutic modulation of LDL size is of benefit in reducing the risk of cardiovascular events. Hypolipidaemic treatment is able to alter LDL subclass distribution but strong variations have been noticed among different agents. Fibrates have a major impact on triglyceride metabolism and in modulating LDL size and subclasses, but variations exist among the different molecules.A literature search (by Medline and Scopus) was performed using the following headings: 'small dense LDL', 'LDL size', '…
Sustainability Development in Mathematics Education : A Case Study of What Kind of Meanings Do Prospective Class Teachers Find for the Mathematical S…
2019
In this article, our focus is on sustainable development in mathematics education from the point of view of teacher training. The aim was to develop prospective teachers’ content knowledge and pedagogical content knowledge of school mathematics. As a case study, we chose the mathematical symbol “a/b”, and examined how prospective class teachers in Finland connect it to the concepts of fraction, ratio, division, rational number or probability. Mathematics textbooks often have a central role in lessons, and they affect strongly how pupils understand concepts and the relationships between them. We chose languaging as a multi-semiotic approach to interpreting what kind of meanings the prospecti…
Predictors of long-term outcomes in patients undergoing periodontal maintenance
2017
Abstract Aim This retrospective study aimed to characterize the baseline status of patients following periodontal maintenance, analysing the association between the long‐term outcome of these patients, smoking, bruxism, and the main clinical and radiographic variables. Material and methods A sample of 174 patients with moderate to severe periodontitis was refined into homogeneous subsamples according to smoking and bruxism and the rate of tooth loss due to periodontal disease (TLPD): 0, 1–2, and >2 teeth. The association and the distribution (χ² test) of the variables within the subsamples were analysed. Results Smoking and bruxism were significantly associated with higher TLPD rates. Verti…
