The current magnitude of big-game hunting has outpaced the natural growth of populations, making artificial breeding necessary to rapidly boost hunted populations. In this study, we evaluated if the rapid increase of red deer (Cervus elaphus) abundance, caused by the growing popularity of big-game hunting, has impacted the natural genetic diversity of the species. We compared several genetic diversity metrics between 37 fenced populations subject to intensive management and 21 wild free-ranging populations. Diphenylmethyl cations formed by benzylic cleavage of the molecular ions of ortho heteroalkyl substituted 1,1-diphenylalkanes undergo the double rearrangement process (H to C followed by C to C) previously reported for ortho-methoxy derivatives. Hence the formation of substituted benzyl (or tropylium) ions allowing this double rearrangement process constitutes an interesting type of fragmentation reaction characteristic for 1,1-diphenylalkanes bearing ortho substituents (OMe, OEt, OiPr, SMe, NHMe, NMe2) which are able to transfer a hydride to the charged benzyl carbon of diphenylmethyl cations formed by benzylic cleavage of the molecular ion.

In most mammalian cells, the Golgi complex forms a continuous ribbon. In neurodegenerative diseases, the Golgi ribbon of a specific group of neurons is typically broken into isolated elements, a very early event which happens before clinical and other pathological symptoms become evident. It is not known whether this phenomenon is caused by mechanisms associated with cell death or if, conversely, it triggers apoptosis. This thesis focuses on two separate topics. The first topic concerns the upgrade of the Time Projection Chamber (TPC) detector of the ALICE experiment. The upgrade will take place during the second Long Shutdown (2019-2020). The part of the upgrade I participated in was the replacement of the detector’s current readout electronics with Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) foils. This change would allow for the continuous readout of the data, resulting in a hundredfold increase in the amount of data the ALICE experiment can process, as the TPC is the central tracking detector. Uncertainties on the determination of the strong coupling αs from the energy evolution of jet fragmentation functions at low z

The QCD coupling alpha_s is determined at NLO*+NMLLA accuracy from the comparison of experimental jet data to theoretical predictions of the energy-evolution of the parton-to-hadron fragmentation function moments (multiplicity, peak, width, skewness) at low fractional hadron momentum z. From the existing e+e- and e-p jet data, we obtain alpha_s(m_Z^2) = 0.1195 +/- 0.0021 (exp.) {+0.0015}_{-0.0} (scale) at the Z mass. The uncertainties of the extracted alpha_s value are discussed.

Studies on the zooplankton of the deep subalpine Lake Garda

The specific composition and seasonal dynamics of the zooplankton of Lake Garda have been studied through monthly surveys in two annual cycles (December 1994-November 1995 and January-December 1997). The assemblage is largely dominated by Copipo-diaptomus steueri, a typical calanoid presently identified in deep (Garda, Iseo) and shallow lakes of NE Italy and in the hinterland of the central Adriatic region (Dalmatia and Marche Region). Anti-tumor activity of the methanolic extracts of Salvia menthifolia

In the present research we investigated the anti-proliferative activity of Salvia menthifolia Ten. (formerly Salvia menthaefolia), Lamiaceae, on a glioblastoma cell line, since up to date poor therapeutic results have been reported for treatment of malignant glioblastoma. Methanol extracts from different anatomical parts of S. menthifolia were tested on DBTRG-05MG cell line by MTT assay. The most active primary stems extract was also evaluated for apoptosis induction.
