Orienteering : a journey from the deep forest to the Finns' living rooms, an overview of the orienteering as a sport from 2000 to 2015 in Finland
2017
Orienteering is a sport which has its roots in the early 20th century. Academic research of the development of orienteering has mostly concentrated on the decades of the 20th century. Recently there has not been conducted a thorough research of the evolvement of the Finnish orienteering, even though the both orienteering and the Finnish sport and physical culture, have faced new challenges and changes in the form of technological developments and transformation of the society. The purpose of this research was to determine and describe the possible changes in the Finnish orienteering during 2000-2015. Furthermore, the factors behind these possible changes were illustrated. The data was colle…

Data from: Wood-inhabiting fungi with tight associations with other species have declined as a response to forest management
2016
Research on mutualistic and antagonistic networks, such as plant–pollinator and host–parasite networks, has shown that species interactions can influence and be influenced by the responses of species to environmental perturbations. Here we examine whether results obtained for directly observable networks generalize to more complex networks in which species interactions cannot be observed directly. As a case study, we consider data on the occurrences of 98 wood-inhabiting fungal species in managed and natural forests. We specifically ask if and how much the positions of wood-inhabiting fungal species within the interaction networks influence their responses to forest management. For this, we…
Data from: Habitat discontinuities separate genetically divergent populations of a rocky shore marine fish
2017
Habitat fragmentation has been suggested to be responsible for major genetic differentiations in a range of marine organisms. In this study, we combined genetic data and environmental information to unravel the relative role of geography and habitat heterogeneity on patterns of genetic population structure of corkwing wrasse (Symphodus melops), a rocky shore species at the northern limit of its distribution range in Scandinavia. Our results revealed a major genetic break separating populations inhabiting the western and southern coasts of Norway. This genetic break coincides with the longest stretch of sand in the whole study area, suggesting habitat fragmentation as a major driver of genet…
Effect of tauroursodeoxycholic acid on bile acid-induced apoptosis in primary human hepatocytes
2000
Background/aims The accumulation of endogenous bile acids contributes to hepatocellular damage during cholestatic liver disease. To evaluate the potential role of apoptotic cell death due to increased concentrations of bile acids, primary human hepatocytes were treated with hydrophobic and hydrophilic bile acids. Because the Fas receptor–ligand system may mediate apoptosis in human liver cells, the effect of toxic bile acids on hepatocellular Fas receptor expression was evaluated. Materials and methods Primary human hepatocytes were incubated with 50 and 100 μM glycochenodeoxycholic acid (GCDCA) and co-incubated with equimolar concentrations of tauroursodeoxycholic acid (TUDCA). To evaluate…
Dithiothreitol prevents age-associated decrease in oocyte/conceptus viability in vitro.
1998
The present study was designed to ascertain whether the negative effects on reproductive potential of post-ovulatory ageing in vitro of oocytes can be prevented by antioxidant therapy. Mouse metaphase II (MII) oocytes were aged in vitro for 12 h prior to insemination in the presence of varying concentrations of L-ascorbic acid, 6-methoxy-2,5,7,8-tetramethylchromane-2-carboxylic acid (Trolox), L-cystine dihydrochloride, ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), beta-mercaptoethanol and DL-dithiothreitol (DTT). In-vitro ageing of oocytes was associated with lower fertilization rate, higher proportion of concepti exhibiting cellular fragmentation at 24 h post-insemination and lower percentage of…
Antiapoptotic effect of calcitonin gene-related peptide on oxidative stress-induced injury in H9c2 cardiomyocytes via the RAMP1/CRLR complex.
2005
Calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) plays an important role in the mediation of protective effects observed in situations such as ischemic preconditioning in rat hearts. In this study, we investigated in H9c2 rat cardiomyoblasts if the protective effect of CGRP could be linked to an inhibitory effect on the apoptotic pathway. We also determined the specificity of observed effects by treatment with adrenomedullin (ADM) in stress conditions generated by 100 microM hydrogen peroxide. Using MTT assays, we demonstrate that a pretreatment with CGRP decreases by half the loss of cell viability induced by H(2)O(2). CGRP inhibits phosphatidylserine externalization, caspase 3 activation and DNA fr…
Fragmentation of bile duct stones: a prospective systematic in vitro evaluation of argon plasma coagulation, cryotechnology, and water-jet technology
2009
Background and study aim Choledocholithiasis is a common disease in the West. Lithotripsy by mechanical methods using baskets and by laser or electrohydraulic methods varies in effectiveness. With argon plasma coagulation (APC), high temperatures are used for devitalization and fragmentation; cryogenic techniques use the selective controlled application of freeze-thaw cycles to devitalize pathological tissue; and the dissecting water jet exploits the high pressure action of a thin laminar jet. We aimed to assess the feasibility and effectiveness of APC, cryotechnology, and the dissecting water jet as options for the fragmentation of bile duct stones. Methods In an in vitro feasibility study…
