Estimation of the risk of the frailty syndrome in the independent-living population of older people.

2019

Frailty syndrome (FS) is one of the biggest problems faced by an ageing population. The aim of the study was to analyse selected parameters to assess the possibility of FS or symptoms related to this syndrome among independent and subjectively healthy people aged 60 + years and to select tests that may have a high level of diagnostic success while at the same time being easy to conduct, standardised and have a high level of reliability. The study group consisted of 1006 people aged 60 + years and the research protocol was very extensive, focusing on the broadly understood assessment of the functional biological markers of health in this group of people. The main outcome measures were hand-g…

Frailty syndrome in community care – tips for patients and caregivers

2017

Do rozpoznania ZS stosuje się m.in. skalę Frie…

The relationship between depression and frailty syndrome: a systematic review

2014

Frailty is a geriatric syndrome characterised by the clinical presentation of identifiable physical alterations such as loss of muscle mass and strength, energy and exercise tolerance, and decreased physiological reserve. Frailty and depressive symptoms are common issues facing older adults and may be associated. It is not clear if the depression facilitates the appearance of frailty syndrome or vice versa or these two coexist independently in the same individuals. We performed searches in several databases (Embase, PubMed, CINAHL, Scopus, and PsycINFO) papers published between November 2003 to February 2014 about frailty syndrome and depression in people aged 65 and older published and the …

New Molecular Targets and Lifestyle Interventions to Delay Aging Sarcopenia

2014

The term sarcopenia was originally created to refer age-related loss of muscle mass with consequent loss of strength (Morley et al., 2001). There are now four international definitions of sarcopenia (Cruz-Jentoft et al., 2010; Muscaritoli et al., 2010; Morley et al., 2011). In essence they all agree, requiring a measure of walking capability [either low gait speed or a limited endurance (distance) in a 6-min walk], together with an appendicular lean mass of <2 SDs of a sex and ethnically corrected normal level for individuals 20–30 years old. Sarcopenia is a prevalent health problem among the elderly. On average, 5–13 and 11–50% of people aged 60−70 years and ≥80 years, respectively suffer …

Effect of a Prebiotic Formulation on Frailty Syndrome

2016

Aging can result in major changes in the composition and metabolic activities of bacterial populations in the gastrointestinal system and result in impaired function of the immune system. We assessed the efficacy of prebiotic Darmocare Pre (R) (Bonusan Besloten Vennootschap (BV), Numansdorp, The Netherlands) to evaluate whether the regular intake of this product can improve frailty criteria, functional status and response of the immune system in elderly people affected by the frailty syndrome. The study was a placebo-controlled, randomized, double blind design in sixty older participants aged 65 and over. The prebiotic product was composed of a mixture of inulin plus fructooligosaccharides …

Frailty syndrome and pre-operative risk evaluation: A systematic review

2015

Abstract Background Frailty is a geriatric syndrome characterized by the clinical presentation of identifiable physical alterations and decreased physiological reserve. The assessment of frailty syndrome has been recently related with post-surgical outcomes and overall mortality in older individuals. Design and data sources We performed searches in Pubmed, Embase, Scopus, SCIELO and IME (Spanish medical index) databases from their start dates to February 2014 for original papers about the identification of the relationship between frailty and pre-operative risk evaluation in people aged 65 and over. Review methods We followed criteria of systematic PRISMA guidelines. Two independent reviewe…

Frailty syndrome is associated with changes in peripheral inflammatory markers in prostate cancer patients undergoing androgen deprivation therapy.

2019

To evaluate the role of peripheral inflammation (leukocyte differential count, the proinflammatory cytokines IL-beta, TNF-α, IL-6, IL-8, and the inflammatory markers fibrinogen and C-reactive protein [CRP]) in frailty syndrome in patients with prostate cancer (CaP) undergoing antiandrogen therapy (ADT).A total of 46 men between 51 and 92 years of age with CaP and receiving ADT were classified as frail, prefrail or robust according to the Fried scale. A geriatric assessment was performed, based on the Minimental State Examination for cognitive function, the Barthel index for basic activities of daily living, the Yesavage scale for geriatric depression, and the Athens insomnia scale. In addit…

Frailty Assessment in a Stable COPD Cohort: Is There a COPD-Frail Phenotype?

2021

The frailty syndrome increases the morbidity/mortality in older adults, and several studies have shown a higher prevalence of this syndrome in patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). The aim of this study was to identify the characteristics of frail patients with COPD to define a new phenotype called "COPD-frail." We conducted a cross-sectional study in a cohort of patients with stable COPD, classified as either frail, pre-frail, or non-frail. Sociodemographic, clinical, and biochemical variables were compared between the three groups of patients. The study included 127 patients, of which 31 were frail, 64 were pre-frail, and 32 non-frail. All subjects had FEV1/FVC below…

Adherence to Medication in Older Adults with Type 2 Diabetes Living in Lubuskie Voivodeship in Poland: Association with Frailty Syndrome

2022

Purpose: Diabetic patients aged 65 years or older are more likely to be frail than non-diabetic older adults. Adherence to therapeutic recommendations in the elderly suffering from diabetes and co-existent frailty syndrome may prevent complications such as micro- or macroangiopathy, as well as significantly affect prevention and reversibility of frailty. The study aimed at assessing the impact of frailty syndrome (FS) on the level of adherence to medication in elderly patients with type 2 diabetes (DM2). Patients and Methods: The research was carried out among 175 DM2 patients (87; 49.71% women and 88; 50.29% men) whose average age amounted to 70.25 ± 6.7. Standardized research instr…

Geriatrijas pacientu ar vecuma nespējas sindromu stacionārās rehabilitācijas perioda rezultātu izvērtējums

2018

Nosaukums: Geriatrijas pacientu ar vecuma nespējas sindromu stacionārās rehabilitācijas perioda rezultātu izvērtējums Problēmas raksturojums: Vecuma nespējas sindroms izraisa dažādu organisma sistēmu priekšlaicīgu novecošanos un samazina fizioloģiskās rezerves, palielina stacionārās ārstēšanas biežumu un pazemina dzīves kvalitāti, īpaši akūtu saslimšanu gadījumos. Mērķis: analizēt vecāka gadu gājuma pacientu, kuri pakļauti stacionēšanas riskam vai nespēj turpināt uzsākto akūtās saslimšanas ārstēšanu ambulatori, veselības stāvokli, ņemot vērā, vai viņi bija spējīgi atgriezties savā dzīvesvietā pēc rehabilitācijas noslēguma. Pētījuma metodes: funkcionalitātes izvērtējums tika veikts ārstēšana…
