A three-dimensional cohesive-frictional grain-boundary micromechanical model for intergranular degradation and failure in polycrystalline materials

Abstract In this study, a novel three-dimensional micro-mechanical crystal-level model for the analysis of intergranular degradation and failure in polycrystalline materials is presented. The polycrystalline microstructures are generated as Voronoi tessellations, that are able to retain the main statistical features of polycrystalline aggregates. The formulation is based on a grain-boundary integral representation of the elastic problem for the aggregate crystals, that are modeled as three-dimensional anisotropic elastic domains with random orientation in the three-dimensional space. Frictional effect in mode II delamination: Experimental test and numerical simulation

Abstract The present paper proposes an experimental and a numerical analysis of the frictional effect on the mode II delamination. Frictional stresses between the crack edges can absorb and dissipate significant energy contributions in the delamination zones, especially under cyclic loading conditions. The experimental tests are performed for a set of unidirectional End-Notched Flexure (ENF) composite specimens, which are subjected to fatigue loading law with increasing mean value. Molecular Scale Study of Domain Boundaries and Frictional Stick-Slip Motion on Lipid Bilayers

A highly 2-dimensional (2D) anisotropic crystal formation of an organic one component lipid bilayer system is presented measured in air by atomic force microscopy. 2D domains with different crystal orientation could be observed. Their molecularly smooth domain boundaries are perceived to be either commensurable or incommensurable lattice joints. Differences in the orientation of the crystal lattice affects dynamic friction on the micrometer scale. High resolution friction images provide stick-slip motions depending on the scan direction in respect to the lattice orientation. Cohesive delamination and frictional contact on joining surface via XFEM

In the present paper, the complex mechanical behaviour of the surfaces joining two different bodies is analysed by a cohesive-frictional interface constitutive model. The kinematical behaviour is characterized by the presence of discontinuous displacement fields, that take place at the internal connecting surfaces, both in the fully cohesive phase and in the delamination one. Solid state bonding in extrusion and FSW: process mechanics and analogies

Abstract Aluminum alloys are widely used in the aircraft industries even if such materials present lower ductility with respect to steels, anisotropy phenomena and, more important, they are often “difficult” to be welded or even “non-weldable”. Dissimilar material lap joints by Friction Stir Welding of Steel and Titanium Sheets: Process Modeling

In the paper a continuum based FEM model for Friction Stir Welding of different material lap joint made out of thin stainless steel and titanium sheets is proposed. The simulation campaign was made out using the 3D Lagrangian implicit code DEFORM{trade mark, serif} by means of a rigid-visco-plastic approach. Friction stir welding of stainless steel thin sheets in lap configuration

New research trends for Friction Stir Welding include the use of highly resistant materials as steels and titanium alloys. In the paper a continuum based FEM model for Friction Stir Welding of lap joint made out of thin stainless steel sheets is proposed, that is 3D Lagrangian implicit, coupled, rigid-viscoplastic. The model, whose potential has been analyzed though temperature distribution comparisons, is able to predict temperature, strain and strain rate distributions, with varying process variables. In this way the FEM model can be applied for effective process and tool design.
