The role of social support in the association between gambling, poor health and health risk-taking
2016
Aims: Studies have shown that gambling is associated with poor health and health risk-taking behaviour. However, little is known about those factors that can influence the association between gambling, health risk-taking and health. Using a population-based School Health Promotion Study of eighth- and ninth-grade Finnish boys and girls ( N = 62,956), we investigated the relationships between gambling frequency, health risk-taking and poor health as well as whether social support from parents, friends and school staff could mediate these associations. Methods: Path analysis was used to discover direct and indirect effects of health, health risk-taking and gambling. Results: Social support f…
Social support as a mediator between problem behaviour and gambling: a cross-sectional study among 14–16-year-old Finnish adolescents
2016
Background: During the adolescent period, risktaking behaviour increases. These behaviours can compromise the successful transition from adolescence to adulthood. The purpose of this study was to examine social support as a mediator of the relation between problem behaviour and gambling frequency among Finnish adolescents. Methods: Data were obtained from the national School Health Promotion Study (SHPS) from the years 2010 and 2011 (N=102 545). Adolescents were classified in the most homogeneous groups based on their problem behaviour via latent class analysis. Results: Path analysis indicated that social support was negatively associated with problem behaviour, and problem behaviour and so…

Experiences of a non-clinical set of adolescents and young adults living with persistent pain:a qualitative metasynthesis
2021
PurposeAround 15%–30% of adolescents and young adults (AYAs) experience persistent or chronic pain. The purpose of this study was to synthesise evidence from qualitative primary studies on how AYAs in a non-clinical population experience living with persistent pain.MethodA qualitative metasynthesis guided by Sandelowski and Barroso’s guidelines was used. The databases Medline, Embase, Cinahl, PsycINFO, Mednar and ProQuest were searched for studies from 1 January 2005 to 15 February 2021. Inclusion criteria were AYAs aged 13–24 years with first-hand experience of living with persistent, recurrent or episodic non-clinical pain in any body site. Pain associated with a medical diagnosis, malign…
Stable same-sex friendships with higher achieving partners promote mathematical reasoning in lower achieving primary school children
2015
This study is designed to investigate friend influence over mathematical reasoning in a sample of 374 children in 187 same-sex friend dyads (184 girls in 92 friendships; 190 boys in 95 friendships). Participants completed surveys that measured mathematical reasoning in the 3rd grade (approximately 9 years old) and one year later in the 4th grade (approximately 10 years old). Analyses designed for dyadic data (i.e., longitudinal Actor-Partner Interdependence Models) indicated that higher achieving friends influenced the mathematical reasoning of lower achieving friends, but not the reverse. Specifically, greater initial levels of mathematical reasoning among higher achieving partners in the …
Eco depletion: The impact of hunger on prosociality by means of environmentally friendly attitudes and behavior
2021
Abstract The present research investigated the impact of hunger on prosociality in a consumer choice context by means of environmentally friendly attitudes and behavior. Two eye-tracking studies were conducted with hunger measured (Study 1) and manipulated (Study 2). The data were analyzed through bivariate correlations, Pearson's chi-square tests, and analyses of variance (ANOVAs). Our findings, based on cross-sectional and experimental evidence from field and lab settings, revealed that hungry consumers express more prosocial attitudes than their satiated counterparts in terms of general environmental concerns and importance ratings of buying eco-labeled products. However, we found no sig…
Biodegradable Polymers for the Production of Nets for Agricultural Product Packaging
2021
It is well known that the need for more environmentally friendly materials concerns, among other fields, the food packaging industry. This regards also, for instance, nets used for agricultural product (e.g., citrus fruits, potatoes) packaging. These nets are typically manufactured by film blowing technique, with subsequent slicing of the films and cold drawing of the obtained strips, made from traditional, non-biodegradable polymer systems. In this work, two biodegradable polymer systems were characterized from rheological, processability, and mechanical points of view, in order to evaluate their suitability to replace polyethylene-based polymer systems typically used for agricultural prod…
A New Environmentally-Friendly Colorimetric Probe for Formaldehyde Gas Detection under Real Conditions
2018
[EN] A new environmentally-friendly, simple, selective and sensitive probe for detecting formaldehyde, based on naturally-occurring compounds, through either colorimetric or fluorescence changes, is described. The probe is able to detect formaldehyde in both solution and the gas phase with limits of detection of 0.24 mM and 0.7 ppm, respectively. The probe has been tested to study formaldehyde emission in contaminated real atmospheres. The supported probe is easy to use and to dispose, and is safe and suitable as an individual chemodosimeter.
Hydrothermal synthesis of nanostructured zirconia materials: Present state and future prospects
2005
Abstract Hydrothermal procedures for the synthesis of zirconia-doped nanocrystalline powders show important advantages from the thermodynamic and kinetic point of view (larger domain stability of solid species, faster kinetics crystallisation) as well as from technological point of view (one-step synthesis process at low temperatures, better control of the crystallisation and grain sizes with possibilities to obtain nanocrystalline materials, versatility, environmental friendly technology). Establishment of the conditions for obtaining ZrO2-doped with different oxides is based on thermodynamic predictions. Kinetic modelling of the hydrothermal synthesis of zirconia nanopowders is presented.…
Quality Control of Agrochemical Formulations by Diffuse Reflectance near Infrared Spectrometry
2008
A near infrared (NIR)-based methodology has been developed for the determination of 11 pesticides in commercially available formulations. This solvent free, fast and environmentally friendly method was based on the direct measurement of the diffuse reflectance spectra of solid samples, a hierarchical cluster classification and the use of multivariate calibration models to determine each considered active principle in agrochemicals. The proposed partial least squares (PLS) models used for quantification of each compound were built from specific calibration sets composed of nine spectra corresponding to triplicate measurements of a single well characterised commercial sample and two addition…
