Pickering Emulsions Based on Wax and Halloysite Nanotubes: An Ecofriendly Protocol for the Treatment of Archeological Woods

2020

A novel green protocol for the consolidation and protection of waterlogged archeological woods with wax microparticles has been designed. First, we focused on the development of halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) based Pickering emulsions using wax as the inner phase of the oil-in-water droplets. The optimization of the preparation strategy was supported by both optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy, which allowed us to show the morphological features of the prepared hybrid systems and their structural properties, i.e., the distribution of the clay at the interface. Also, the dependence of the overall dimensions of the prepared systems on the halloysite content was demonstrated. Micr…

Random short sisal fiber biocomposites: Optimal manufacturing process and reliable theoretical models

2018

Although several works have been published in literature on agave fibers and their biocomposites, accurate information about the choice of both the fibers and the manufacturing processes that allow the user to optimize the biocomposites properties in terms of strength and stiffness are not yet available; also, no theoretical models that can be used for an accurate evaluation of the mechanical properties of these biocomposites, are reported. To this aim, the present work intends to give a contribution by considering green epoxy biocomposites reinforced by both short and discontinuous sisal agave fibers arranged in proper MAT-type fabrics. In particular, an optimized manufacturing process that…

Implementation of eco-sustainable biocomposite materials reinforced by optimized agave fibers

2018

Abstract Although several works have recently been published in literature about biocomposites, i.e. about composites with polymeric matrix reinforced by natural fibers, only a few articles have been devoted to the implementation of high performance biocomposites for structural and semi-structural applications. The present study aims to give a contribution by considering biocomposites obtained by using an eco-friendly partially bio-based epoxy (green epoxy) and sisal (agave sisalana fibers) obtained by a proper optimization process. Through a systematic experimental analysis, three different types of biocomposites obtained with a suitable manufacturing process, such as random short fiber bi…

CLEASE: a versatile and user-friendly implementation of cluster expansion method

2018

Materials exhibiting a substitutional disorder such as multicomponent alloys and mixed metal oxides/oxyfluorides are of great importance in many scientific and technological sectors. Disordered materials constitute an overwhelmingly large configurational space, which makes it practically impossible to be explored manually using first-principles calculations such as density functional theory due to the high computational costs. Consequently, the use of methods such as cluster expansion (CE) is vital in enhancing our understanding of the disordered materials. CE dramatically reduces the computational cost by mapping the first-principles calculation results on to a Hamiltonian which is much fa…

A low cost and easy re-configurable instrument for power quality survey

2004

In this document the development of a low cost and user friendly PC-based instrument for power quality measurement is proposed, according to IEC 61000-4-7 and standard IEC 61000-4-30. It is an easily re-configurable instrument able to measure harmonics, interharmonics and amplitude disturbances and supply unbalance. In order to verify its accuracy, the instrument has been tested according standard test procedures, by means of a built-up calibration test bench.

Friend retrovirus infection of myeloid dendritic cells impairs maturation, prolongs contact to naïve T cells, and favors expansion of regulatory T ce…

2007

AbstractRetroviruses have developed immunmodulatory mechanisms to avoid being attacked by the immune system. The mechanisms of this retrovirus-associated immune suppression are far from clarified. Dendritic cells (DCs) have been attributed a decisive role in these pathogenic processes. We have used the Friend retrovirus (FV) mouse model in order to acquire further knowledge about the role of infection of DCs in virus-induced immunosuppression. About 20% of the myeloid DCs that were generated from the bone marrow of FV-infected mice carried FV proteins. The infection was productive, and infected DCs transmitted the virus in cell culture and in vivo. FV infection of DCs led to a defect in DC …

Untreated Opuntia ficus indica for the Efficient Adsorption of Ni(II), Pb(II), Cu(II) and Cd(II) Ions from Water

2023

The raw cladode of Opuntia ficus indica (OFI) was evaluated as a sustainable biosorbent for the removal of heavy metals (Ni, Pb, Cu, and Cd) from aqueous solutions. The functional groups of OFI were identified by employing DRIFT-FTIR and CP-MAS-NMR techniques before and after contact with the ions in an aqueous media, showing a rearrangement of the biomass structure due to the complexation between the metal and the functional groups. The adsorption process was studied in both single- and multi-component systems under batch conditions at different pHs (4.0, 5.0, and 6.0), different metal concentrations, and different biomass amounts. The results show that the raw OFI had a removal capacity a…

How individual characteristics shape the structure of social networks

2015

Abstract We study how students’ social networks emerge by documenting systematic patterns in the process of friendship formation of incoming students; these students all start out in a new environment and thus jointly create a new social network. As a specific novelty, we consider cooperativeness, time and risk preferences – elicited experimentally – together with factors like socioeconomic and personality characteristics. We find a number of robust predictors of link formation and of the position within the social network (local and global network centrality). In particular, cooperativeness has a complex association with link formation. We also find evidence for homophily along several dim…

The influence of friendship and communication network density on individual innovative behaviours: a multilevel study

2016

The present study examines whether teams’ friendship and communication network density are related to individual innovative behaviours (IIBs: idea generation, suggestion making, idea promotion and idea implementation). The study sample was composed of 28 teams comprising 101 members. The results obtained by means of multilevel structural equations modelling showed that friendship network density had an indirect positive relationship with the four IIBs through the density of team communication networks.

A physical activity program dedicated to adolescents

2014

Adolescence is a life stage in which the development of individuality and self-identity occurs. The recent study of the SIP evaluated the life style in adolescents, highlighting the low participation to continuative sports programs and the high incidence to sports drop out, interesting more than 30% of adolescents. These problems are partially linked to low compliance of adolescents to coaches training, partially to the request of a sport close to adolescents requirements. However sports participation is beneficial for physical and psychological development of adolescents. Sports programs promote responsible social behaviours and greater academic success, confidence in personal physical abi…
