Permanently online and permanently procrastinating? The mediating role of Internet use for the effects of trait procrastination on psychological heal…
2016
A growing number of studies suggest that Internet users frequently utilize online media as “tools for procrastination.” This study thus investigated the relationship between trait procrastination, Internet use, and psychological well-being in a representative sample of N = 1,577 German Internet users. The results revealed that trait procrastination was associated with an increased use of leisure-related online content and impaired control over Internet use. As a result, Internet users high in trait procrastination showed a higher risk of experiencing negative consequence of Internet use in other life domains. These negative repercussions of insufficiently self-regulated Internet use partia…
Explaining Method Effects Associated With Negatively Worded Items in Trait and State Global and Domain-Specific Self-Esteem Scales
2013
Several investigators have interpreted method effects associated with negatively worded items in a substantive way. This research extends those studies in different ways: (a) it establishes the presence of methods effects in further populations and particular scales, and (b) it examines the possible relations between a method factor associated with negatively worded items and several covariates. Two samples were assessed: 592 high school students from Valencia (Spain), and 285 batterers from the same city. The self-esteem scales used were Rosenberg's Self-Esteem Scale, the State Self-Esteem Scale, and Self-Esteem 17. Anxiety was also assessed with the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, and gend…

“Facebocrastination”? Predictors of using Facebook for procrastination and its effects on students’ well-being
2016
Procrastinating with popular online media such as Facebook has been suggested to impair users well-being, particularly among students. Building on recent procrastination, self-control, and communication literature, we conducted two studies (total N=699) that examined the predictors of procrastination with Facebook as well as its effects on students academic and overall well-being. Results from both studies consistently indicate that low trait self-control, habitual Facebook checking, and high enjoyment of Facebook use predict almost 40 percent of the variance of using Facebook for procrastination. Moreover, results from Study 2 underline that using Facebook for the irrational delay of impor…

Even though the acute effects of pre-exercise static stretching and dynamic muscle activity on muscular and functional performance have been largely investigated, their effects on the corticospinal pathway are still unclear. For that reason, this study examined the acute effects of 5×20 s of static stretching, dynamic muscle activity and a control condition on spinal excitability, corticospinal excitability and plantar flexor neuromuscular properties. Fifteen volunteers were randomly tested on separate days. Transcranial magnetic stimulation was applied to investigate corticospinal excitability by recording the amplitude of the motor-evoked potential (MEP) and the duration of the cortical s…
Progresses in multi-materials billet manufacturing out of metal scraps through friction stir consolidation
2023
Abstract. The evolution of Friction Stir Consolidation (FSC) from recycling towards upcycling technique proved to be one of the excellent solid-state methods for manufacturing functionally graded billets. Multi-material Functional Graded Materials (FGMs) represent a novel class of materials characterized by a gradual change in properties and functions which can be tailored to enhance components performance. Manufacturing techniques play a critical role in achieving the designed compositional and microstructural distribution. Specifically, FSC allows the manufacturing of FGM billets out of metallic chips; the mixing of different metallic chips offers mutually exclusive mechanical properties …
A Theoretical Study of the Favorskii Rearrangement. Calculation of Gas-Phase Reaction Paths and Solvation Effects on the Molecular Mechanism for the …
1997
The molecular mechanism of the α-chlorocyclobutanone transposition to yield cyclopropanecarboxylic acid, as a model of the Favorskii rearrangement, has been theoretically characterized in vacuo by means of ab initio molecular orbital procedures at the Hartree−Fock (HF) level of theory with the 6-31G* and 6-31+G* basis sets. The electron correlation has been estimated at the MP2/6-31G* level and calculations based on density functional theory, BLYP/6-31G*. The solvent effects are included at HF/6-31G* level by means of a polarizable continuum model. The questions related to the two accepted molecular mechanisms, the semibenzilic acid and the cyclopropanone transpositions, as well as the comp…
Integrating the Compliance Function into the Legal Department
2015
This chapter addresses a governance issue: whether it is permissible under the insurance supervisory regime of Solvency II for an insurance undertaking to merge its compliance function with its legal department. The Solvency II provisions in fact do not address the legal department of an insurance undertaking. But the tasks and powers of a legal department are in part the same as those of the compliance function under art. 46, para. 1 of the Solvency II Directive. The conclusion is thus: General insurance supervisory regime principles such as functional segregation and functional independence do not prohibit such a merger. Indeed, such a merger would seem to be advisable in many instances i…
How can I signal my quality to emerge from the crowd? A study in the crowdsourcing context
2022
Crowdsourcing contests are characterized by an intensive level of competition because of the extensive number of solvers that voluntarily self-select to participate in such contests. This study aims at understanding how solvers can signal their quality attributes through the community functionalities, i.e. the online profile and the discussion blog of the crowdsourcing platform, to improve their chances of winning crowdsourcing contests. Drawing on signaling theory, we hypothesize that signaling their skills and capabilities by crafting profiles rich in personal and professional information and by participating actively within the discussion blog by posting and commenting, solvers can influ…
Towards Axiomatic Basis of Inductive Inference
2001
The language for the formulation of the interesting statements is, of course, most important. We use first order predicate logic. Our main achievement in this paper is an axiom system which we believe to be more powerful than any other natural general purpose discovery axiom system. We prove soundness of this axiom system in this paper. Additionally we prove that if we remove some of the requirements used in our axiom system, the system becomes not sound. We characterize the complexity of the quantifier prefix which guaranties provability of a true formula via our system. We prove also that if a true formula contains only monadic predicates, our axiom system is capable to prove this formula…
