Gait and balance impairments are frequently considered as the most significant concerns among individuals suffering from neurological diseases. Robot-assisted gait training (RAGT) has shown to be a promising neurorehabilitation intervention to improve gait recovery in patients following stroke or brain injury by potentially initiating neuroplastic changes. However, the neurophysiological processes underlying gait recovery through RAGT remain poorly understood. As non-invasive, portable neuroimaging techniques, electroencephalography (EEG) and functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) provide new insights regarding the neurophysiological processes occurring during RAGT by measuring diffe…

Introduction Adolescents have experienced decreased aerobic fitness levels and insufficient physical activity levels over the past decades. While both physical activity and aerobic fitness are related to physical and mental health, little is known concerning how they manifest in the brain during this stage of development, characterized by significant physical and psychosocial changes. The aim of the study is to examine the associations between both physical activity and aerobic fitness with brains' functional connectivity. Methods Here, we examined how physical activity and aerobic fitness are associated with local and interhemispheric functional connectivity of the adolescent brain (n = 59…

Assessment of Skeletal Muscle Microperfusion Using MRI

2013

Blood oxygenation level-dependent (BOLD) MRI, arterial spin labeling (ASL) and dynamic contrast enhancement (DCE) are current magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) techniques allowing the non-invasive functional assessment of peripheral microvasculature in healthy and diseased individuals. The functional imaging of skeletal muscle microvasculature helps to understand muscular and vascular physiology and alterations of microcirculation under certain pathological conditions such as peripheral arterial occlusive disease, diabetes mellitus, chronic compartment syndrome and rheumatic disorders. BOLD MRI uses blood as an endogenous contrast agent provided by the different magnetic properties of oxy- a…

AB0210 Quality of Life Indexes in Patients with Very Early Rheumatoid Arthritis (VERA): A Two Center Subgroup Analysis from The Adapthera Cohort: Tab…

2016

Background The significance of early diagnosis and early therapy initiation in patients with RA is tremendous. ADAPTHERA is a state wide rheumatology network based in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. ADAPTHERA aims to improve RA prognosis and quality of patients` life by reducing the time-to-RA-diagnosis. While there have been a lot of studies regarding quality of life in patients with established RA 1,2 , adequate data concerning very early rheumatoid arthritis (VERA) (disease duration Objectives To study quality of life in VERA patients and to investigate its associations with various RA associated clinical and laboratory parameters. Methods In a two center subgroup analysis from the ADAPTH…

Functional MRI and motor behavioral changes obtained with constraint-induced movement therapy in chronic stroke

2011

Background:  The clinical benefits of intensive stroke rehabilitation vary individually. We used multimodal functional imaging to assess the relationship of clinical gain and imaging changes in patients with chronic stroke whose voluntary motor control improved after constraint-induced movement therapy (CIMT). Methods:  Eleven patients (37.6 ± 36.8 months from stroke) were studied by functional MRI (fMRI), transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), and behavioral assessment of hand motor control (Wolf Motor Function Test) before and after 2 weeks of CIMT. Individual and group-level changes in imaging and behavioral parameters were investigated. Results:  Increase in fMRI activation in the sen…

Asthma-COPD overlap syndrome: recent advances in diagnostic criteria and prognostic significance.

2017

The term asthma-chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) overlap syndrome (ACOS) has been proposed for individuals with features of both asthma and COPD. Several attempts have been done to define ACOS on the basis of medical history, symptoms, and functional findings. The main diagnostic criteria include airflow obstruction with a strong although incomplete reversibility to bronchodilation tests, a significant exposure to cigarette or biomass smoke, and a history of atopy or asthma. Additional diagnostic elements include eosinophilic airway and systemic inflammation, a good response to corticosteroid treatment, and a high concentration of exhaled nitric oxide. ACOS should be distinguish…

Sensorimotor training prior total knee arthroplasty and effects on functional outcome: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

2021

Abstract Background Altered muscle activation patterns and proprioception, loss of strength, and weight bearing asymmetries are common limitations after total knee arthroplasty, which can also affect balance. Therefore, preoperative sensorimotor training has been proposed to enhance surgical outcome. Research question Is preoperative sensorimotor training effective in improving functional outcome in patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty? Does preoperative sensorimotor training affect secondary outcomes such as balance, pain, and quality of life? Methods A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted by searching PEDro, MEDLINE, Embase, Cochrane Library, and Scopus databases from…

Functional Electrical Stimulation Alters the Postural Component of Locomotor Activity in Healthy Humans

2015

International audience; Knowledge of the effects of Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) of different intensity on postural stability during walking in healthy subjects is necessary before these relationships in patients with postural disorders can be assessed and understood. We examined healthy subjects in Control group walking on a treadmill for 40 min and in FES group provided with 30 min of stimulation, which intensity increased every 10 min. The main difference between Control and FES group was the progressive increase of trunk oscillations in sagittal, frontal, and horizontal planes and an increase of relative stance duration in parallel with FES intensity increase. Both Control an…

Cohort profile: Thrombolysis in Ischemic Stroke Patients (TRISP): a multicentre research collaboration

2018

PurposeThe ThRombolysis in Ischemic Stroke Patients (TRISP) collaboration aims to address clinically relevant questions about safety and outcomes of intravenous thrombolysis (IVT) and endovascular thrombectomy. The findings can provide observational information on treatment of patients derived from everyday clinical practice.ParticipantsTRISP is an open, investigator-driven collaborative research initiative of European stroke centres with expertise in treatment with revascularisation therapies and maintenance of hospital-based registries. All participating centres made a commitment to prospectively collect data on consecutive patients with stroke treated with IVT using standardised definiti…
