Practical strategies for stable operation of HFF-QCM in continuous air flow

2013

Currently there are a few fields of application using quartz crystal microbalances (QCM). Because of environmental conditions and insufficient resolution of the microbalance, chemical sensing of volatile organic compounds in an open system was as yet not possible. In this study we present strategies on how to use 195 MHz fundamental quartz resonators for a mobile sensor platform to detect airborne analytes. Commonly the use of devices with a resonant frequency of about 10 MHz is standard. By increasing the frequency to 195 MHz the frequency shift increases by a factor of almost 400. Unfortunately, such kinds of quartz crystals tend to exhibit some challenges to obtain a reasonable signal-to…

Poor Esophageal Motility: A Tailored Approach?

2014

New onset dysphagia following antireflux surgery is among the most undesirable side effects of an otherwise excellent therapy. While its cause is multifactorial, insufficient circular muscle strength of the esophageal body, not powerful enough to force the bolus through the distal neo-high pressure zone, can be a component of the pathophysiology. The relative merits of “tailoring” the degree of fundoplication based upon esophageal body motility and/or other clinical features have been debated for decades. Herein we discuss the rationale for a tailored approach, its pros and cons and review data published to date available to guide the clinician in individual patient decision-making.

Local behaviour of singular solutions for nonlinear elliptic equations in divergence form

2012

We consider the following class of nonlinear elliptic equations $$\begin{array}{ll}{-}{\rm div}(\mathcal{A}(|x|)\nabla u) +u^q=0\quad {\rm in}\; B_1(0)\setminus\{0\}, \end{array}$$ where q > 1 and $${\mathcal{A}}$$ is a positive C 1(0,1] function which is regularly varying at zero with index $${\vartheta}$$ in (2−N,2). We prove that all isolated singularities at zero for the positive solutions are removable if and only if $${\Phi\not\in L^q(B_1(0))}$$ , where $${\Phi}$$ denotes the fundamental solution of $${-{\rm div}(\mathcal{A}(|x|)\nabla u)=\delta_0}$$ in $${\mathcal D'(B_1(0))}$$ and δ0 is the Dirac mass at 0. Moreover, we give a complete classification of the behaviour near zero of al…

The "Umberto Rizzitano Collection" at the Regional Library of Palermo

2016

Umberto Rizzitano was one of the most important Italian Orientalists. Born in Alexandria of Egypt in 1913 into a Sicilian family, he studied Arabic language and literature at the Oriental School of Rome under the supervision of Giorgio Levi della Vida, Michelangelo Guidi and Carlo Alfonso Nallino. He directed the Italian Institute of Culture in Cairo and the Istituto per l’Oriente in Rome. Revivifier of the glorious past of Arabic studies in Palermo after the death of the eminent and well-known orientalist Michele Amari, Umberto Rizzitano taught Arabic Language and Literature at the University of Palermo. Among his most important works we remember his Italian translations of the novel Zayna…

Bright Retinal Lesions Detection using Color Fundus Images Containing Reflective Features

2009

Recently, the research community has developed many techniques to detect and diagnose diabetic retinopathy with retinal fundus images. This is a necessary step for the implementation of a large scale screening effort in rural areas where ophthalmologists are not available. In the United States of America, the incidence of diabetes is increasing among the young population. Retina fundus images of patients younger than 20 years old present a high amount of reflectance due to the Nerve Fibre Layer (NFL). Generally, the younger the patient the more the reflectance is visible. We are not aware of algorithms able to explicitly deal with this type of artifact.
