Hippocampal reversible lesions in a case of transient global amnesia

2018

We report the case of 55-year-old man that after an emotional stress showed retrograde and anterograde amnesia with impairment of orientation in space and time but undisturbed consciousness. A neurological examination excluded other neurological signs or symptoms. The amnesic syndrome resolved spontaneously within 24 hours and the hypothesis of transient global amnesia was placed. Brain CT scan and conventional MRI sequences did not show any relevant pathological findings but diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) showed two millimetric bright spot of restricted diffusion in the right hippocampus; in a brain MRI follow-up those findings were no more appreciable. The diagnosis of transient global …

Specific Heat and Transport Functions of Water

2020

Numerous water characteristics are essentially ascribed to its peculiarity to form stronghydrogen bonds that become progressively more stable on decreasing the temperature. However, thestructural and dynamical implications of the molecular rearrangement are still subject of debate andintense studies. In this work, we observe that the thermodynamic characteristics of liquid water arestrictly connected to its dynamic characteristics. In particular, we compare the thermal behaviourof the isobaric specific heat of water, measured in different confinement conditions at atmosphericpressure (and evaluated by means of theoretical studies) with its configurational contribution obtainedfrom the value…

International positioning of the Spanish psychology journals

2020

Fabra and the linguistic authority in the Valencian Country: the Philological Section of Institut d’Estudis Valencians (1937-1939)

2019

Digoxin and digitoxin elimination in man by charcoal hemoperfusion

1978

Since there is no widely used causal means of reducing the severity of massive digitalis intoxication the capability of hemoperfusion with coated activated charcoal to remove toxicologically relevant amounts of digoxin and digitoxin was evaluated in vitro and in man. At a blood flow rate of 100 ml/min the digoxin clearance by hemoperfusion in vitro was 51±8 ml/min in comparison to 24.3±11.3 ml/min by hemodialysis. The average hemoperfusion clearance of digitoxin was 31.7±13.4 ml/min, whereas almost no digitoxin was removed by hemodialysis. These clearance values point to the ability of hemoperfusion of eliminating digitalis glycosides from the blood. They do not clarify the essential questi…

Transport of dipeptides and phosphono dipeptides through an immobilized liquid membrane. Stereoselectivity of the process

1993

Abstract Dipeptide and phosphono dipeptide hydrochlorides permeated well through a 1-decanol membrane supported in a porous polyethylene hollow fiber matrix. This transfer is easily accomplished either by passive or by carrier-facilitated (with Kryptofixes 222 or 5 present in the membrane phase) transport. The transport is stereoselective with l-l dipeptides being transported faster than their l-d isomers.

Nonlinear Diffusion in Transparent Media

2021

Abstract We consider a prototypical nonlinear parabolic equation whose flux has three distinguished features: it is nonlinear with respect to both the unknown and its gradient, it is homogeneous, and it depends only on the direction of the gradient. For such equation, we obtain existence and uniqueness of entropy solutions to the Dirichlet problem, the homogeneous Neumann problem, and the Cauchy problem. Qualitative properties of solutions, such as finite speed of propagation and the occurrence of waiting-time phenomena, with sharp bounds, are shown. We also discuss the formation of jump discontinuities both at the boundary of the solutions’ support and in the bulk.

NIR and Visible Image Fusion for Improving Face Recognition at Long Distance

2014

Face recognition performance achieves high accuracy in close proximity. However, great challenges still exist in recognizing human face at long distance. In fact, the rapidly increasing need for long range surveillance requires a passage from close-up distances to long distances which affects strongly the human face image quality and causes degradation in recognition accuracy. To address this problem, we propose in this paper, a multispectral pixel level fusion approach to improve the performance of automatic face recognition at long distance. The main objective of the proposed approach is to formulate a method to enhance the face image quality as well as the face recognition rate. First, v…

Cataclastic solution creep of very soluble brittle salt as a rock analogue

1998

Until about the late 1960s, macroscopically ductile deformation of quartz was seen as a microscopically cataclastic process by most geologists (cf. the origin of the name ‘mylonite’). Undulatory extinction, subgrains, recrystallised grains and even crystallographic preferred orientations were interpreted as due to water-assisted brittle deformation processes. Nowadays, by contrast, the occurrence of these optical microstructures is considered as conclusive and unequivocal evidence for dislocation creep. The abundance of these microstructures in naturally deformed rocks lead to the conclusion that dislocation creep is the most important ductile deformation mechanism within the Earth’s crust.…

Copolymerization of VDF and HFP in Supercritical Carbon Dioxide: A Robust Approach for Modeling Precipitation and Dispersion Kinetics

2012

A kinetic model is developed for the heterogeneous free-radical copolymerization of vinylidene fluoride and hexafluoropropylene in supercritical CO 2. The model accounts for polymerization in both the dispersed (polymer-rich) phase and in the continuous (polymer-free) supercritical phase, for radical interphase transport, diffusion limitations, and chain-length-dependent termination in the polymer-rich phase. A parameter evaluation strategy is developed and detailed to estimate most of the kinetic parameters a priori while minimizing their evaluation by direct fitting. The resulting model predictions compare favorably with the experimental results of conversion and MWD at varying monomer fe…
