HISTORY AND ADMISSION FINDINGS A 54-year-old man was admitted because of intermittent fever for 2 days. Ten days earlier he had returned from Kenya. He had not taken any antimalarial drugs prophylactically. INVESTIGATIONS Initial blood smears showed Plasmodium falciparum in 10.4% of erythrocytes. Laboratory tests indicated hyponatremia and disseminated intravascular coagulation. Also, laboratory markers of infection and hemolysis were clearly positive and accompanied by a low-grade normocyticanaemia. Deeply bound pionic states with the (? ?,?) reaction

We study the reactionΣ− +A→Λ + (Aπ−) with the π− bound in the nucleus, as a means of producing deeply bound pionic states in nuclei, so far unobserved. The reaction is similar to the (n, p) reaction but, because of theΣ−, Λ mass difference, it allows the reaction to occur with smaller momentum transfer, thus increasing the transition probability and reducing the effects of distortion. The ratios of signal to background are one to two orders of magnitude better than in the (n, p) reaction.

The ground-state energies and the radial and pair distribution functions of neutral 4He clusters are systematically calculated by the diffusion Monte Carlo method in steps of one 4He atom from 3 to 50 atoms. In addition the chemical potential and the low-lying excitation levels of each cluster are determined with high precision. These calculations reveal that the "magic numbers" observed in experimental 4He cluster size distributions, measured for free jet gas expansions by nondestructive matter-wave diffraction, are not caused by enhanced stabilities. Predictive animal models of intestinal drug absorption are essential tools in drug development to identify compounds with promising biopharmaceutical properties. In situ perfusion absorption studies are routinely used in the preclinical setting to screen drug candidates. The objective of this work is to explore the differences in magnitude and variability on intestinal absorption associated with rat strain and gender. Metoprolol and Verapamil absorption rate coefficients were determined using the in situ closed loop perfusion model in four strains of rats and in both genders.
