Enhancement of Gene Expression by Somatic Hybridization with Primary Cells: High-Level Synthesis of the Hepatitis B Surface Antigen in Monkey Vero Ce…

1990

Vero cells transfected with the S gene encoding the surface antigen (HBsAg) of the hepatitis B virus (HBV) synthesize HBsAg at low levels. We have obtained a large increase in S gene expression by somatic hybridization of Vero cells with primary hepatocytes, which are the natural target cells for HBV infection. Fusion with cells other than hepatocytes did not enhance expression of the S gene. The Vero/hepatocyte hybrid clones analyzed are stable and have maintained a high level of HBsAg synthesis over prolonged periods. Hybrid cell lines may be of general interest for the high-level synthesis of proteins using cloned genes.

A constitutive model for the thermo-mechanical behaviour of fusion-relevant pebble beds and its application to the simulation of HELICA mock-up exper…

2007

Abstract Within the framework of the R&D activities promoted by EFDA on the Helium-Cooled Pebble Bed Test Blanket Module to be irradiated in ITER, attention has been focused on the modelling of the thermo-mechanical behaviour of both beryllium and lithiated ceramic pebble beds that are envisaged to be used respectively as neutron multiplier and tritium breeder. This behaviour depends, mainly, on the reactor-relevant conditions, the pebble sizes and the breeder cell geometries and a general constitutive model has not yet been validated, especially for fusion-relevant applications. ENEA-Brasimone and the Department of Nuclear Engineering (DIN) of the University of Palermo have performed inten…

Multi-scale analysis of apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) predicts cervical nodal status in patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma

2013

The study assess multi-scale diffusion parameters (median volumetric nodal region of interest values, inter-voxel histogram distributions, and intra-voxel diffusion heterogeneity as assessed by the stretched exponential model) as classifiers of nodal status in patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). Low b value (0, 50, 100) derived nodal ADC (perfusion sensitive) was the key parameter facilitating discrimination of metastatic from benign nodes in patients with head and neck SCC. The stretched exponential derived α value together with histogram features of ADC provide an accurate decision tree model for classification of nodal disease.

Overcoming barriers to evidence-based patient blood management: a restricted review

2020

Abstract Background Blood transfusions are associated with a range of adverse patient outcomes, including coagulopathy, immunomodulation and haemolysis, which increase the risk of morbidity and mortality. Consideration of these risks and potential benefits are necessary when deciding to transfuse. Patient blood management (PBM) guidelines exist to assist in clinical decision-making, but they are underutilised. Exploration of barriers to the implementation and utilisation of the PBM guidelines is required. This study aimed to identify common barriers and implementation strategies used to implement PBM guidelines, with a comparison against current expert opinion. Methods A restricted review a…

Disability, Health-Related Quality of Life and Mortality in Lumbar Spine Fusion Patients—A 5-Year Follow-Up and Comparison With a Population Sample

2020

Study Design: Prospective follow-up study. Objectives: We aimed to assess the effect of lumbar spine fusion (LSF) on disability, health-related quality of life and mortality in a 5-year follow-up, and to compare these results with the general population. Methods: 523 consecutive LSF operations were included in a prospective follow-up. Disability was assessed by the Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), and HRQoL by the 36-item Short Form (SF-36) questionnaire using the physical and mental summary scores (PCS and MCS). The patients were compared with an age-, sex-, and residential area matched general population cohort. Results: The preoperative ODI in the patients was 46 (SD 16), and the change …

Cardiorenal Syndrome in Acute Heart Failure: Revisiting Paradigms

2015

A B S T R A C T Cardiorenal syndrome has been defined as the simultaneous dysfunction of both the heart and the kidney. Worsening renal function that occurs in patients with acute heart failure has been classified as cardiorenal syndrome type 1. In this setting, worsening renal function is a common finding and is due to complex, multifactorial, and not fully understood processes involving hemodynamic (renal arterial hypoperfusion and renal venous congestion) and nonhemodynamic factors. Traditionally, worsening renal function has been associated with worse outcomes, but recent findings have revealed mixed and heterogeneous results, perhaps suggesting that the same phenotype represents a dive…

Effect of Process Parameters on the Joint Integrity in Friction Stir Welding of Ti-6Al-4V Lap Joints

2013

Friction Stir Welding (FSW) is a solid state welding process patented in 1991 by TWI; initially adopted to weld aluminum alloys, is now being successfully used also for magnesium alloys, copper and steels. The wide diffusion the process is having is due to the possibility to weld materials traditionally considered difficult to be welded or “unweldable” by traditional fusion welding processes due to peculiar thermal and chemical material properties. Additionally, the process allows welding a wide range of sheet thickness (up to 50mm) avoiding typical fusion welding processes defects, like cavities and porosities, with no shielding gas, filling material or joint preparation. Recently, researc…

Characterization of Fusion Lines Obtained with Laser Welding on Ductile Iron Plates

2016

This paper studies the ductile iron (DI) weldability using laser welding. For performing an Yb:YAG continuous laser was used, with a maximum power of 6 kW. The parametrical window power (P) - welding speed (S) was explored by carrying out the fusion lines on ductile iron plates without preheating, to determinate areas of weldability (complete penetration, correct geometry) to allow further characterization. The criteria for selection of focus areas were the geometry of the fusion lines and the absence of the welding defects. The unsatisfactory domains were characterized by: collapse of the melted metal, incomplete penetration, low fusion lines quality (geometry, compactness). In present stu…
