Irinotecan (CPT-11), oxaliplatin (OXA) and different folinic acid (FA) modulated 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) regimens are active as first-and second-line chemotherapy of metastatic colorectal cancer. Detection of a Dissecting Aortic Aneurysm by Renal Transplant Imaging

After 2 years with a normal post-transplant course a 45-year-old man showed an elevated creatinine level (4.5 mg/dL). Transplantation had been neccessary because of progressive glomerulonephritis. Renal transplant imaging was obtained with 150 Mbq Tc-99m MAG3. The perfusion images showed radionuclide accumulation in the area of the upper abdominal aorta and delayed perfusion of the right iliac artery. Accumulation of Tc-99m MAG3 in the transplant was slow and no filling of the bladder could be observed. Immediately after imaging, the patient developed acute hemorrhagic shock. Blood Infusion and the Risk of Haemorrhage in Patients Undergoing Cardiac Surgery with Extracorporeal Circulation.

Purpose: Patients undergoing cardiac surgery with extracorporeal circulation (ECC) frequently present haemorrhages as a complication associated with high morbidity and mortality. One of the factors that influences this risk is the volume of blood infused during surgery. The objective of this study was to determine the optimal volume of autologous blood that can be processed during cardiac surgery with ECC. Cardiac kinematic parameters computed from video of in situ beating heart

AbstractMechanical function of the heart during open-chest cardiac surgery is exclusively monitored by echocardiographic techniques. However, little is known about local kinematics, particularly for the reperfused regions after ischemic events. We report a novel imaging modality, which extracts local and global kinematic parameters from videos of in situ beating hearts, displaying live video cardiograms of the contraction events. Effects of bilingualism on white matter atrophy in mild cognitive impairment: a diffusion tensor imaging study

Background and purpose Previous investigations show that bilinguals exhibit the first symptoms of dementia 4-5 years later than monolinguals. Therefore, bilingualism has been proposed as a cognitive reserve mechanism. Recent studies have advanced towards an understanding of the brain mechanisms underlying bilingualism's protection against dementia, but none of them deals with white matter (WM) diffusion. Nitric oxide mediates the inhibition by interleukin-1β of pentagastrin-stimulated rat gastric acid secretion

Bolus injection of interleukin-1 beta (2 micrograms kg-1, i.v.) inhibited acid secretion induced by intravenous infusion of pentagastrin (8 micrograms kg-1 h-1) in the continuously perfused stomach of the anaesthetized rat. Administration of interleukin-1 beta did not modify mean systemic arterial blood pressure. Pretreatment with NG-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME, 2-10 mg kg-1, i.v.), but not dexamethasone (5 mg kg-1, s.c. twice over 16 h), restored the acid secretory responses to pentagastrin. Different muscarinic receptors mediate autoinhibition of acetylcholine release and vagally-induced vasoconstriction in the rat isolated perfused heart

Experiments were carried out on rat isolated perfused hearts with both vagus nerves attached. The acetylcholine stores were labelled with [14C]-choline. The effects of muscarinic receptor antagonists on the [14C]-overflow and increase in perfusion pressure evoked by vagus nerve stimulation (10 Hz, 4-10 mA) were studied in order to determine the muscarinic receptor type involved in autoinhibition of acetylcholine release and vagally-induced vasoconstriction in the rat heart. Effects of red blood cell transfusion on anemia-related symptoms in patients with cancer.

The aim of this study was to assess the effects of red blood cell transfusion, and the subsequent increase in hemoglobin values, on anemia-related symptoms in a cohort of patients with cancer with different survival times. A red blood cell transfusion was recommended to a consecutive sample of patients with hemoglobin levels of 8 +/- 0.5 g/dL. We aimed to determine whether 3-nitropropionic acid (3-NPA) preconditioning protects rat livers against warm ischemia/reperfusion injury. We hypothesized that 3-NPA mediates its protective effects by Bcl-2 upregulation. Brown-Norway rats (200 g) were injected with 3-NPA (10 mg/kg intraperitoneally) 24 h before 90 min of selective warm in situ ischemia. In additional experiments, 30-day survival was studied after 90 min of warm liver ischemia and resection of nonischemic liver tissue.
