Turbulent mixing and dispersion mechanisms over flexible and dense vegetation

2019

The present study investigates flow turbulence and dispersion processes in the presence of flexible and dense vegetation on the bed. The turbulent dispersion coefficients and the terms of the turbulent kinetic energy equation are determined by using data collected in a straight laboratory channel with living vegetation on the bed. Results show that the turbulent integral lengths assume an order of magnitude comparable to the stems’ characteristic dimension independently by the direction and the turbulence assumes an isotropic behavior. The coefficients of dispersion have a trend similar to that of the turbulent lengths and assume low values in the longitudinal, transversal and vertical dire…

Thermodynamische Stabilitt makromolekularer Kristalle

1960

The density of free energy of a chain crystal contains two terms of opposed sign dependent on the numberN of chain elements in the straight section of the macromolecules between the surfaces of the crystal perpendicular to thec-axis. The surface energy contributes a positive term decreasing withN. The amplitude Φ of the periodic lattice field opposing the chain translation in thec-axis yields the negative term. Due to the incoherent longitudinal thermal vibration of the four first-order neighbours of any chain the fieldΦ is smeared out. Its amplitude decreases the more the higherN and hence yields an increase in free energy density with increasingN. As a consequence of the opposite sign of …

Contour detection based on nonlinear discrete diffusion in a cellular nonlinear network

2001

International audience; A contour detection based on a diffusive cellular nonlinear network is proposed. It is shown that there exists a particular nonlinear function for which, numerically, the obtained contour is satisfactory. Furthermore, this nonlinear function can be achieved using analog components.

STABILITY AND SPECTRA OF SMALL 3He-4He CLUSTERS

2005

Diffusion Monte Carlo calculations have been systematically performed to analyze the stability of small mixed 3 He -4 He clusters, as well as their excitation spectra. The picture that emerges is that of systems with strong shell effects whose binding and excitation energies are essentially determined by the monopole properties of an effective Hamiltonian.

Ortho-H2 and the age of prestellar cores

2013

Prestellar cores form from the contraction of cold gas and dust material in dark clouds before they collapse to form protostars. Several concurrent theories exist to describe this contraction but they are currently difficult to distinguish. One major difference is the timescale involved in forming the prestellar cores: some theories advocate nearly free-fall speed via, e.g., rapid turbulence decay, while others can accommodate much longer periods to let the gas accumulate via, e.g., ambipolar diffusion. To tell the difference between these theories, measuring the age of prestellar cores could greatly help. However, no reliable clock currently exists. We present a simple chemical clock based…

Proton-neutron correlations and the longitudinal nuclear response

1988

We study the influence of the proton-neutron correlations, in particular of the tensor ones, on the longitudinal nuclear response. They generate a high-energy tail that we evaluate. We show that this tail produces an apparent quenching of the Coulomb sum rule. The amount of quenching found is significant, although insufficient to explain the totality of the missing strength.

Cluster-transfer reactions with radioactive beams: A spectroscopic tool for neutron-rich nuclei

2015

An exploratory experiment performed at REX-ISOLDE to investigate cluster-transfer reactions with radioactive beams in inverse kinematics is presented. The aim of the experiment was to test the potential of cluster-transfer reactions at the Coulomb barrier as a mechanism to explore the structure of exotic neutron-rich nuclei. The reactions Li7(Rb98,αxn) and Li7(Rb98,txn) were studied through particle-γ coincidence measurements, and the results are presented in terms of the observed excitation energies and spins. Moreover, the reaction mechanism is qualitatively discussed as a transfer of a clusterlike particle within a distorted-wave Born approximation framework. The results indicate that cl…

Laser Compton polarimetry at JLab and MAMI

2007

For modern parity violation experiments it is crucial to measure and monitor the electron beam polarization continuously. In the recent years different high-luminosity concepts, for precision Compton backscattering polarimetry, have been developed, to be used at modern CW electron beam accelerator facilities. As Compton backscattering polarimetry is free of intrinsic systematic uncertainties, it can be a superior alternative to other polarimetry techniques such as Moller and Mott scattering. State-of-the-art high-luminosity Compton backscattering designs currently in use and under development at JLab and Mainz are compared to each other. The latest results from the Mainz A4 Compton polarime…

Observer for a thick layer of solid deuterium-tritium using backlit optical shadowgraphy and interferometry.

2007

Our work is in the context of the French "laser megajoule" project, about fusion by inertial confinement. The project leads to the problem of characterizing the inner surface, of the approximately spherical target, by optical shadowgraphy techniques. Our work is entirely based on the basic idea that optical shadowgraphy produces "caustics" of systems of optical rays, which contain a great deal of 3D information about the surface to be characterized. We develop a method of 3D reconstruction based upon this idea plus a "small perturbations" technique. Although computations are made in the special "spherical" case, the method is in fact general and may be extended to several other situations.

Relativistic J-dependence of the isotope shift in the 6s-6p doublet of Ba II

1984

The collinear laser-ion beam technique has been used to measure the isotope shift and hyperfine structure in the 6s-6p doublet (4,934A, 4,554A) of Ba II for all seven stable isotopes. The influence of the excited2P1/2 and2P3/2 states on the field shift leads to a difference of 2.5(3)% in the electronicF factors. The specific mass shifts differ by {A′-A} 2.2(3) MHz which corresponds to about 12% of the normal mass shift.
