A friction factor analysis of the coupling between polymer/solvent self- and mutual-diffusion: polystyrene/toluene

The Bearman statistical mechanical theory, which couples the mutual-diffusion and self-diffusion coefficients via friction factors, has been applied to polystyrene/toluene solutions with polystyrene molecular weights of 18 kDa and 900 kDa. Toluene and polystyrene self-diffusion coefficients, obtained from the literature and measured here, along with polystyrene/toluene binary mutual-diffusion coefficients and thermodynamic data, were employed to independently calculate the three friction coefficients (ξ 12 , ξ 11 , and ξ 22 ) required to describe transport within binary solutions. Self-Diffusion of Small Molecules into Rubbery Polymers: A Lattice Free-Volume Theory

In the framework of the Free Volume Theory, a new equation was derived for the evaluation of self-diffusion coefficients of small molecules in polymers above the mixture glass transition temperature. The derivation of the equation turned out to be straightforward once the equivalence between the free-volume and the unoccupied volume given by Thermodynamic Lattice Theories is assumed. A parameter evaluation scheme is proposed, which is substantially simpler compared to the conventional Vrentas-Duda approach, even without losing generality. Observation of Very Narrow Linewidths in the Fluorescence Excitation Spectra of Single Conjugated Polymer Chains at 1.2 K

Fluorescence emission and excitation spectra of single poly[2-methoxy-5-(2'-ethyl-hexyloxy)-1,4-phenylene vinylene] polymer molecules embedded in poly(methylmethacrylate) have been recorded at 1.2 K. The ubiquitous spectral diffusion causes large variations in the spectral shape and apparent linewidth in the emission spectra. Nevertheless, we find very narrow (approximately 0.1 cm(-1)) purely electronic zero-phonon lines in the excitation spectra, which are 2 orders of magnitude smaller than previous estimates of the homogeneous linewidth. These results complement the molecular description of the low energy transitions in conjugated polymers.

Time-monitoring sensor based on oxygen diffusion in an indicator/polymer matrix

Abstract A time-monitoring sensor based on the oxidation of leuco methylene blue (LMB) to methylene blue (MB) was developed. The sensor changes its color from yellow to green in the presence of oxygen and was integrated into a poly(vinyl alcohol) matrix. The diffusion of the oxygen in the polymer matrix as well as the oxygen uptake due to the oxidation reaction determines the time monitoring of the sensor. A physical model has been developed that accounts for both the diffusion as well as the oxidation reaction. For this purpose, the reaction kinetics was determined experimentally. Abstract The effect of loading rate and strain on the creep behavior after sample yielding has been studied in previous communications (14–15) for Mylar in tension and for Lexan in compression. In this work the creep behavior of Lexan samples previously elongated is considered both in tension and in compression. A procedure which collects all the data independently of both loading rate and initial creep strain is proposed.

Factors influencing the transport of tryptophan hydrochloride through supported liquid membranes containing macrocyclic carriers

Commercially available PTFE membranes were used as a support for liquid membranes in amino acid transport. Using tryptophan as a model amino acid, the influence of the type of organic liquid, kind of macrocyclic carrier and counter-ion on transport efficiency was examined. These studies show the strong influence of the kind of the counter-ion co-transported with amino acid cation, and the type of macrocyclic carrier used on the transport efficiency. The transport efficiency depends also on the pH of the source phase and on the nature of the organic liquid used as a membrane solvent. QENS from polymeric micelles in supercritical CO[sub 2]

We report QENS measurements from PS-b-PFOA aggregates in supercritical CO2. These consist of dense cores of CO2-insoluble polystyrene surrounded by a ‘corona’ of PFOA surfactant molecules whose CO2-philic groups interface with supercritical CO2. Lineshapes are dominated by localized diffusive modes and segmental dynamics of the anchored, finite-length PFOA chains. For Q∼0.6 A−1, we obtain effective diffusion coefficients of ≈0.8×10−6 cm2/sec. At higher Q, a single component is not sufficient as shown by excess intensity on the flanks. For Q>1.5 A−1, the wings reflect contributions due to a distribution of faster, more localized chain modes.

Microcirculatory Dysfunction Induced by Cigarette Smoking

This review deals with the deleterious effects of cigarette smoking on the microcirculation, both in terms of morphological (i.e., vessel wall injury, capillary loss) and functional aspects. The latter concerns predominantly changes in tissue perfusion and its regulatory mechanisms (i.e., reactive hyperemia, sequestration of blood cells in the microcirculation). The mechanisms of action of cigarette smoking on the microcirculation include compromised endothelial-dependent vasorelaxation, platelet aggregation, endothelial cell dysfunction, and the activation of circulating leukocytes.
