Zur methodik der diffusionsmessungen in organischen Lösungsmitteln

1951

A diffusion cell of the draw-slide type is described, working without any grease. So neither solute nor organic liquid gets connection with lubricate and no transfer of grease from the draw-slide to the glass windows can occur. An example for the service-ability of the cell is given by diffusio…

Translational and rotational molecular motion in supercooled liquids studied by NMR and forced Rayleigh scattering

1994

It has been shown that translational diffusion coefficients, Dt, in the supercooled van der Waals liquids, orthoterphenyl, phenolphthaleindimethylether, and salol, have a weaker temperature dependence than the shear viscosity, η, at T ≲ 1.2Tg and can be described by Dt ∼ η−χ with χ < 1 whereas Dr ∼ η−1 applies for the mean rotational diffusion coefficients, Dr, down to the glass transition temperature, Tg. This apparent decoupling of translational and rotational motion has been discussed in relation with possible anomalous short time diffusion, spatial heterogeneity, and cooperative molecular motions close to Tg.

Spectrophotometric determination of fluoride in fluoride-bearing minerals after decomposition by fusion with sodium hydroxide

1984

The decomposition of highly insoluble minerals (fluorspar and cryolite) by fusion with molten alkali-metal hydroxides is studied. The introduction of additives such as aluminium compounds or sodium peroxide to obtain total liberation of fluoride from calcium fluoride samples, is tested. The fusion is done in a silver crucible with a Bunsen burner. The cooled melt is easily soluble, giving solutions suitable for spectrophotometric fluoride determination by the Zr(IV)-fluoride-Erichrome Cyanine R method.

Spectral investigation of spin echo emission

1993

Abstract The spectral content of the echo radiation emitted after a two-pulse sequence is measured in a two-level spin system. The spectral profiles exhibit maxima and zeroes of spectral density depending on the exciting sequence parameters. A calculation based on a vectorial model relates the zeroes to those packets that happen to be transparent to the second (refocusing) pulse. Moreover we report on a new spectral narrowing effect which we tentatively ascribe to the instantaneous diffusion.

Photoinduced optical anisotropy in organic molecular films controlled by an electric field

1993

Abstract The photoinduced reorientation of dye molecules in molecular films on solid substrates has been controlled with external dc electric fields, leading to solid state structures, which are macroscopically polar, temporally stable at room temperature, and well-defined at the molecular level. A simulation based on the excitation-driven rotational diffusion of the molecules in the potential of their neighbors yielded a realistic model and indicated a collective character of the process. This shows that we are close to a quantitative comprehension of the molecular interactions within these films.

Forced Rayleigh scattering from non-harmonic gratings applied to complex diffusion processes in glass-forming liquids

1999

Abstract Tracer diffusion of 9,10-phenanthrenequinone (PQ) and its photoproduct in super-cooled phenolphthalein-dimethyl-ether (PDE) was studied by forced Rayleigh scattering. In order to investigate the spatial frequency dependence of the grating dynamics, several spatial harmonics of the grating with non-sinusoidal phase profile produced by non-linear recording were monitored. An optical scheme with a diverging reading beam is proposed for simultaneous reconstruction of the harmonic components.

Formation, diffusion, and aggregation of radiation-induced defects in MgO and α-Al 2 O 3

1997

MgO and M2O3 (corundum) are important ceramic materials with several technological applications including theirpossible use in fusion reactors' . Weare therefore studying the properties ofpoint defects (vacancies, interstitials, andtheir aggregates) and electronic defects (trapped holes and electrons) in these materials. Pair-potential (PP) calculationswere carried out using the Mott-Littleton (ML) two-region strategy, as implemented in the computer code CASCADEdue to Leslie. Details ofthe method, including the construction ofPPs, are in the literature3. For semi-empirical INDO(intermediate neglect ofdifferential overlap) calculations computer codes developed at the University of Riga were …

Metabolic Status and Reaction to Heat of Normal and Tumor Tissue

1995

The occurrence of differential heating and differential thermal sensitivity between malignant tumors and normal tissues is thought to be due to limited heat dissipation and energy depletion in many solid tumors which in turn results from an inadequately functioning tumor microcirculation (Jain and Ward-Hartley 1984; Song 1984, 1991; Vaupel and Kallinowski 1987; Reinhold 1988; Vaupel et al. 1988a; Vaupel 1990). As a consequence of the latter pathophysiological condition, supply and drainage function are restricted in many solid tumors or, at least, in some tumor areas, thus creating a hostile metabolic microenvironment characterized by tissue hypoxia, acidosis, and energy depletion. Hypothermic preservation of lung allograft inhibits cytokine-induced chemoattractant-1, endothelial leucocyte adhesion molecule, vascular cell adhesi…

2007

Summary Organ dysfunction is a major clinical problem after lung transplantation. Prolonged cold ischaemia and reperfusion injury are believed to play a central role in this complication. The influence of cold preservation on subsequent warm reperfusion was studied in an isolated, ventilated and perfused rat lung. Rat lungs were flushed with cold Perfadex-solution and stored at 4°C for different time periods. Thereafter lungs were perfused and ventilated for up to 3 h. Physiological parameters, production of inflammatory mediators and leucocyte infiltration were measured before and after perfusion. Lungs subjected to a cold ischaemia time of up to 6 h showed stable physiological conditions …

Measurements of Tumor Blood Flow Using Intraperitoneal Deuterium and 2H-NMR Spectroscopy

1992

Tumors usually have a sparse, disorganized, and inefficient vascular network that leaves a large fraction of the tumor cells in an oxygen deprived and hostile metabolic microenvironment. Hence tumor blood flow, or more correctly nutritive perfusion, has important interactions with treatment efficacy. For example, hypoxic tumor cells, which occur in tumors with low blood flow, are less susceptible to radiation and are probably responsible for most radiation treatment failures (Adams, 1981). Similarly, cytotoxic drug delivery could be predicted by blood flow measurements, with clear implications regarding the expected success of chemotherapy. Thus, the ability to conveniently measure tumor bl…
