Protofibril formation of amyloid beta-protein at low pH via a non-cooperative elongation mechanism.
2005
Deposition of the amyloid beta-protein (Abeta) in senile or diffuse plaques is a distinctive feature of Alzheimer's disease. The role of Abeta aggregates in the etiology of the disease is still controversial. The formation of linear aggregates, known as amyloid fibrils, has been proposed as the onset and the cause of pathological deposition. Yet, recent findings suggest that a more crucial role is played by prefibrillar oligomeric assemblies of Abeta that are highly toxic in the extracellular environment. In the present work, the mechanism of protofibril formation is studied at pH 3.1, starting from a solution of oligomeric precursors. By combining static light scattering and photon correla…
Density as a constraint and the separation of internal excitation energy in TDHF
1985
We present a fast and efficient constrained Hartree-Fock iteration scheme which constraints the complete density distribution to remain constant. The scheme is particularly suited to a coordinate- or momentum-space representation. The technique is applied to separate the collective and the internal energy in a propagating TDHF state. We study the behavior of these two energies in an16O+16O collision.
Practical Applications of Models of Oxygen Supply, Diffusion, and Consumption
1996
It is the objective of this paper to describe, what models of oxygen supply, diffusion, and consumption have been and can be used for and to discuss some common problems in employing mathematical models of O2 transport. In a first part, four typical fields for model applications are selected from the wide variety of former investigations and are illustrated with some recent examples.
The diagnosis and management of gastric cancer: Expert discussion and recommendations from the 12th ESMO/World Congress on Gastrointestinal Cancer, B…
2011
Well-recognized experts in the field of gastric cancer discussed during the 12th European Society Medical Oncology (ESMO)/World Congress Gastrointestinal Cancer (WCGIC) in Barcelona many important and controversial topics on the diagnosis and management of patients with gastric cancer. This article summarizes the recommendations and expert opinion on gastric cancer. It discusses and reflects on the regional differences in the incidence and care of gastric cancer, the definition of gastro-esophageal junction and its implication for treatment strategies and presents the latest recommendations in the staging and treatment of primary and metastatic gastric cancer. Recognition is given to the ne…
Sensor Fusion Localization and Navigation for Visually Impaired People
2018
In this paper, we present an innovative cyber physical system for indoor and outdoor localization and navigation, based on the joint utilization of dead-reckoning and computer vision techniques on a smartphone-centric tracking system. The system is explicitly designed for visually impaired people, but it can be easily generalized to other users, and it is built under the assumption that special reference signals, such as colored tapes, painted lines, or tactile paving, are deployed in the environment for guiding visually impaired users along pre-defined paths. Differently from previous works on localization, which are focused only on the utilization of inertial sensors integrated into the s…
Eulerian two-fluid model of alkaline water electrolysis for hydrogen production
2020
Hydrogen storage is a promising technology for storage of renewable energy resources. Despite its high energy density potential, the development of hydrogen storage has been impeded, mainly due to its significant cost. Although its cost is governed mainly by electrical energy expense, especially for hydrogen produced with alkaline water electrolysis, it is also driven by the value of the cell tension. The most common means of electrolyzer improvement is the use of an electrocatalyst, which reduces the energy required for electrochemical reaction to take place. Another efficient means of electrolyzer improvement is to use the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD)-assisted design that allows the…
A new control parameter to predict micro-warping-induced job failure in LPBF of TI6AL4V titanium alloy
2023
Abstract Laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) includes a few printing techniques widely used, in recent years, concerning the additive manufacturing of Ti6Al4V alloys. These produced parts, typically utilized in sectors such as aerospace and biomedical, are characterized by very high added value. It is therefore fundamental to identify the influence of process parameters typical of LPBF technology on the occurrence of warping leading to process failure. This study deals with the characterization of single-track and “micro-scale” level warping phenomena which may lead to protrusion of material over the powder bed and process failure before normal termination. This phenomenon was investigated as a …
The nationality of companies in French law
2012
The development of international economic relations and the construction of an integrated European area, both from an economic and a political point of view, has revived the debate on the nationality of trading companies. The question is not so much whether trading companies have a nationality on an equal footing with natural persons – solutions have long been accepted by international doctrine and jurisprudence – but rather to determine how this notion has evolved and adapted to the constraints on the one hand, of a globalized market economy and, on the other hand, of European Union law which overturns the traditionally accepted solutions of nationality of trading companies into the legal …
Small ice particles at slightly supercooled temperatures in tropical maritime convection
2020
In this paper we show that the origin of the ice phase in tropical cumulus clouds over the sea may occur by primary ice nucleation of small crystals at temperatures just between 0 and −5 ∘C. This was made possible through use of a holographic instrument able to image cloud particles at very high resolution and small size (6 µm). The environment in which the observations were conducted was notable for the presence of desert dust advected over the ocean from the Sahara. However, there is no laboratory evidence to suggest that these dust particles can act as ice nuclei at temperatures warmer than about −10 ∘C, the zone in which the first ice was observed in these clouds. T…
Ethyl Hexanoate Transfer Modeling in Carrageenan Matrices for Determination of Diffusion and Partition Properties.
2007
; Aroma compound properties in food matrices, such as volatility and diffusivity, have to be determined to understand the effect of composition and structure on aroma release and perception. This work illustrates the use of mass transfer modeling to identify diffusion and partition properties of ethyl hexanoate in water and in carrageenan matrices with various degrees of structure. The comparison of results obtained with a diffusive model to those obtained with a convective model highlights the importance of considering the appropriate transfer mechanism. Modeling of the preliminary experimental steps ensures correct estimation of the conditions for the main aroma release step. The obtaine…
