Test-retest reliability of survey items on ownership and use of physical activity trackers
2019
Background: Researchers are interested in using digital tools, such as physical activity trackers (PAT), to promote and measure physical activity. PAT is a fast-growing research area that measures movement therefore, reliable questions on the ownership and use of PATs among adolescent populations need to be developed. Objective: The aim of this study was to conduct an intra-rater test-retest reliability study on PAT survey items used for surveillance purposes among young adolescents in ownership and use of smartphone applications (apps) and heart rate monitors (HRM). Methods: Young adolescents (N = 755; 11-, 13-, and 15-year-olds) in the Olomouc region of the Czech Republic were recruited t…
Lavatanssi-illan fyysinen aktiivisuus ja siihen yhteydessä olevat tekijät
2012
Kuuttila, Kirsi 2012. Lavatanssiko liikuntaa? Lavatanssi-illan fyysinen aktiivisuus ja siihen yhteydessä olevat tekijät. Liikuntapedagogiikan Pro gradu -tutkielma. Mittaukset toteutettiin tanssipaikka V2:lla Har…
Association between resting blood pressure and maximal blood pressure response to exercise and arterial health
2022
We investigated the longitudinal associations of blood pressure, cardiorespiratory fitness, and arterial stiffness among children. Arterial stiffening has been repeatedly shown to be a cardiovascular mortality predictor and can be observed early in childhood. As such, it is crucial to understand whether a child’s blood pressure, fitness level, and body composition can predict early signs of atherosclerosis and arterial stiffening. The current study examined the relationship between blood pressure, cardiorespiratory fitness, and arterial stiffness over time in children, using data from the Physical and Nutrition in Children (PANIC) Study. It is a physical and dietary intervention study condu…
Habitual physical activity and heart rate variability in 12-year old children
2012
ABSTRACT Wennman, Heini 2012. Habitual physical activity and heart rate variability in 12-year old children. Department of Biology of Physical Activity, University of Jyväskylä, 92p. The study of heart rate variability (HRV) provides useful information about the function of the cardiac autonomic nervous system. The effects of many environmental factors on HRV are well known, but the associations between physical activity (PA) and HRV, especially in children, are less investigated. Higher HRV is related to health and many pathologic conditions are associated with reduced HRV. Exercise causes HRV to diminish, but improves HRV in long term. PA promotes many health related changes in energy met…
Heart rate recovery after maximal and submaximal exercise
2012
Pasi Karjalainen (2012). Heart rate recovery after maximal and submaximal exercise. Department of Biology of Physical Activity, University of Jyväskylä, Master thesis in exercise physiology, 76 pages. Heart rate recovery (HRR) after exercise reflects autonomic control of the heart. Heart rate recovery (HRR) has shown to have prognostic value among asymptomatic populations and patients with diseases. In addition, changes in HRR may reflect the effects of training load. The role of parasympathetic reactivation in decrease of heart rate (HR) is known to be strong immediately after the cessation of exercise. It is also shown that HRR is affected by the activity of the sympathetic system that is…

Mitatun fyysisen kunnon sekä kehonkoostumuksen yhteys työperäiseen stressiin ylipainoisilla, liikuntaa harrastamattomilla henkilöillä
2013
TIIVISTELMÄ Mitatun fyysisen kunnon sekä kehonkoostumuksen yhteys työperäiseen stressiin ylipainoisilla, liikuntaa harrastamattomilla henkilöillä Maaria Mäkitervo Jyväskylän yliopisto Liikuntatieteellinen tiedekunta Terveystieteiden laitos Syksy 2013 53 sivua, 9 liitettä Työperäinen stressi on eräs työelämän keskeisimmistä haasteista ja sillä on mittavat vaikutukset terveydenhuollon kustannuksiin. Stressillä tiedetään olevan kiistaton vaikutus sydämen sykevaihteluun ja liikunnan on todettu laukaisevan stressiä ja parantavan sykevaihtelua. Näin voidaan tarkastella yksilön aerobisen kunnon vaikutusta sykevaihtelun kautta työperäisen stressin ilmentymiseen ja kokemiseen. Tämän pro gradu -tutki…

Post-exercise heart rate variability : a new approach to evaluation of exercise-induced physiological training load
2015
To improve maximal endurance performance, an optimal physiological training load, i.e. the balance between exercise and recovery, is required. In general, the goal of a single endurance exercise session is to transiently disturb body homeostasis after which a so-called supercompensation, an improvement in performance, can occur if the recovery period is adequate. The physical training load of a single exercise session consists of the combination of exercise intensity and duration. At the present time, there is no single tool to quantify the amount of disturbance of homeostasis that is equal to physiological training load of a single exercise session. Heart rate variability (HRV), the change…
Exploring in-class physical activity levels during physical education lessons in Finland
2017
This research aimed to measure in-class physical activity levels during physical education in grades seven to nine, and to determine the influence of gender and lesson content on such activity levels. Data was collected from 96 lessons across 14 secondary schools. Heart rate data consisted of 821 valid measurements. The mean heart rate across the data set was 135 beats per minute and students engaged in moderate-to-vigorous physical activity 41% of lesson time. Students were most active during game lessons and there was an evident gender difference, with boys being more active. However, when the impact of lesson content and gender on physical activity were tested simultaneously by multi-lev…
