The Influence of Crystal Size Distributions on the Rheology of Magmas: New Insights From Analog Experiments

2017

This study examines the influence of particle size distributions on the rheology of particle suspensions by using analogue experiments with spherical glass beads in silicone oil as magma equivalent. The analyses of 274 individual particle-bearing suspensions of varying modality (uni-, bi- tri- and tetramodality), as well as of polymodal suspensions with specific defined skewness and variance, are the first data set of its kind and provide important insights in the relationship between the solid particles of a suspension and its rheological behaviour. Since the relationship between the rheology of particle bearing suspensions and its maximum packing fraction ϕm is well established by several…

An expanded model and application of the combined effect of crystal-size distribution and crystal shape on the relative viscosity of magmas

2018

International audience; This study examines the combined effect of crystal-size distributions (CSD) and crystal shape on the rheology of vesicle free magmatic suspensions and provides the first practical application of an empirical model to estimate the relative effect of crystal content and CSD's on the viscosity of magma directly from textural image analysis of natural rock samples in the form of a user-friendly texture-rheology spreadsheet calculator. We extend and apply established relationships between the maximum packing fraction ϕm of a crystal bearing suspension and both its rheological properties and the polydispersity γ of a CSD. By using analogue rotational rheometric experiments…

Nitrogen Type and Availability Drive Mycorrhizal Effects on Wheat Performance, Nitrogen Uptake and Recovery, and Production Sustainability

2020

Plant performance is strongly dependent on nitrogen (N), and thus increasing N nutrition is of great relevance for the productivity of agroecosystems. The effects of arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi on plant N acquisition are debated because contradictory results have been reported. Using 15N-labeled fertilizers as a tracer, we evaluated the effects of AM fungi on N uptake and recovery from mineral or organic sources in durum wheat. Under sufficient N availability, AM fungi had no effects on plant biomass but increased N concentrations in plant tissue, plant N uptake, and total N recovered from the fertilizer. In N-deficient soil, AM fungi led to decreased aboveground biomass, which sugges…

Algorithmic Approach for Slot Filling Factors Determination in Electrical Machines

2018

In several industrial sectors, such as electric and hybrid traction, the demand for increasingly efficient and high power density electrical machines has grown considerably over the last few years. The improvement of slot filling factor of the electrical machines is an useful provision to satisfy this request. In particular, this topic has been the subject of interest for the industrial sector in recent years, since the technology of winding processes have evolved and allow an economically sustainable realization of windings with an ordered structure rather than randomly. The winding phase must be supported by an accurate design process in which it is possible to evaluate the maximum slot f…

Darboux integrable system with a triple point and pseudo-abelian integrals

2016

We study pseudo-abelian integrals associated with polynomial perturbations of Dar-boux integrable system with a triple point. Under some assumptions we prove the local boundedness of the number of their zeros. Assuming that this is the only non-genericity, we prove that the number of zeros of the corresponding pseudo-abelian integrals is bounded uniformly for nearby Darboux integrable foliations.

NMR Investigation of Structures of G-Protein Coupled Receptor Folding Intermediates

2016

Folding of G-protein coupled receptors (GPCRs) according to the two-stage model (Popot, J. L., and Engelman, D. M. (1990) Biochemistry 29, 4031-4037) is postulated to proceed in 2 steps: partitioning of the polypeptide into the membrane followed by diffusion until native contacts are formed. Herein we investigate conformational preferences of fragments of the yeast Ste2p receptor using NMR. Constructs comprising the first, the first two, and the first three transmembrane (TM) segments, as well as a construct comprising TM1-TM2 covalently linked to TM7 were examined. We observed that the isolated TM1 does not form a stable helix nor does it integrate well into the micelle. TM1 is significant…

Altered distribution and function of splenic innate lymphoid cells in adult chronic immune thrombocytopenia

2018

IF 7.607; International audience; Innate lymphoid cells (ILCs) have been characterized as innate immune cells capable to modulate the immune response in the mucosae. Human ILCs have been rarely described in secondary lymphoid organs except in tonsils. Moreover, their function and phenotype in human secondary lymphoid organs during autoimmune diseases have never been studied. We took advantage of splenectomy as a treatment of immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) to describe and compare splenic ILC from 18 ITP patients to 11 controls. We first confirmed that ILC3 represented the most abundant ILC subset in human non-inflamed spleens, accounting for 90% of total ILC, and that they were mostly constit…

Amorphous, Smart, and Bioinspired Polyphosphate Nano/Microparticles: A Biomaterial for Regeneration and Repair of Osteo-Articular Impairments In-Situ

2018

Using femur explants from mice as an in vitro model, we investigated the effect of the physiological polymer, inorganic polyphosphate (polyP), on differentiation of the cells of the bone marrow in their natural microenvironment into the osteogenic and chondrogenic lineages. In the form of amorphous Ca-polyP nano/microparticles, polyP retains its function to act as both an intra- and extracellular metabolic fuel and a stimulus eliciting morphogenetic signals. The method for synthesis of the nano/microparticles with the polyanionic polyP also allowed the fabrication of hybrid particles with the bisphosphonate zoledronic acid, a drug used in therapy of bone metastases in cancer patients. The r…

Precise temporal and spatial regulation of gene expression in the brain is a prerequisite for cognitive processes such as learning and memory. Epigenetic mechanisms that modulate the chromatin structure have emerged as important regulators in this context. While posttranslational modification of histones or the modification of DNA bases have been examined in detail in many studies, the role of ATP-dependent chromatin remodeling factors (ChRFs) in learning- and memory-associated gene regulation has largely remained obscure. Here we present data that implicate the highly conserved chromatin assembly and remodeling factor Chd1 in memory formation and the control of immediate early gene (IEG) r…

Sjogren's syndrome: Review of the aetiology, PathophysiologyPotential therapeutic interventions.

2016

Background Sjogren’s syndrome (SS) is an autoimmune disorder characterised by lymphocytic infiltration of exocrine glands, resulting in glandular dysfunction. Objectives: This study aims to review the aetiology of Sjogren’s syndrome, highlight aspects that contribute to the pathophysiology of the disease and explore treatment options that target different mediators of pathogenesis. Material and Methods The MEDLINE/PubMed and Google Scholar databases were searched systematically with the terms “Sjogren’s syndrome”; “clinical”; “treatment”; “management”. Eligible studies had to meet a predefined inclusion criteria. Results 912 identified studies were evaluated against the inclusion criteria. …
