Comparative Antitumor Effect of Preventive versus Therapeutic Vaccines Employing B16 Melanoma Cells Genetically Modified to Express GM-CSF and B7.2 i…
2012
Cancer vaccines have always been a subject of gene therapy research. One of the most successful approaches has been working with genetically modified tumor cells. In this study, we describe our approach to achieving an immune response against a murine melanoma model, employing B16 tumor cells expressing GM-CSF and B7.2. Wild B16 cells were injected in C57BL6 mice to cause the tumor. Irradiated B16 cells transfected with GM-CSF, B7.2, or both, were processed as a preventive and therapeutic vaccination. Tumor volumes were measured and survival curves were obtained. Blood samples were taken from mice, and IgGs of each treatment group were also measured. The regulatory T cells (Treg) o…
Etude numérique d'équations aux dérivées partielles non linéaires et dispersives
2011
Numerical analysis becomes a powerful resource in the study of partial differential equations (PDEs), allowing to illustrate existing theorems and find conjectures. By using sophisticated methods, questions which seem inaccessible before, like rapid oscillations or blow-up of solutions can be addressed in an approached way. Rapid oscillations in solutions are observed in dispersive PDEs without dissipation where solutions of the corresponding PDEs without dispersion present shocks. To solve numerically these oscillations, the use of efficient methods without using artificial numerical dissipation is necessary, in particular in the study of PDEs in some dimensions, done in this work. As stud…
Hard-sphere fluids in annular wedges: density distributions and depletion potentials.
2009
We analyze the density distribution and the adsorption of solvent hard spheres in an annular slit formed by two large solute spheres or a large solute and a wall at close distances by means of fundamental measure density functional theory, anisotropic integral equations and simulations. We find that the main features of the density distribution in the slit are described by an effective, two--dimensional system of disks in the vicinity of a central obstacle. For large solute--solvent size ratios, the resulting depletion force has a straightforward geometrical interpretation which gives a precise "colloidal" limit for the depletion interaction. For intermediate size ratios 5...10 and high sol…
Indefinite integrals involving Jacobi polynomials from integrating factors
2020
A method was presented recently for deriving integrals of special functions using two kinds of integrating factor for the homogeneous second-order linear differential equations which many special f...
A third integrating factor for indefinite integrals of special functions
2020
An integrating factor f ~ x is presented involving the terms in y ′ ′ x and q x y x of the general homogenous second-order linear ordinary differential equation. The new integrating factors obey se...
A New Software Tool for Design, Optimization, and Complete Analysis of Rotating Electrical Machines Windings
2015
In this paper, a new software tool developed by the authors for ac winding design, optimization, and complete analysis is presented. In particular, this software can be used as a valid aid in design and analysis for a wide variety of motor and generator windings with generic number of phases (including the case of those machines in which some slots are left empty), pole pairs, slot number, and so on. The calculation of winding factors and the evaluation of their harmonic distribution is also accomplished. The software is implemented in the MATLAB programming environment. By means of some examples, covering the most relevant winding types, the capabilities of this software will be shown. In …
High-pressure stability and compressibility ofAPO4(A=La, Nd, Eu, Gd, Er, and Y) orthophosphates: An x-ray diffraction study using synchrotron radiati…
2010
Room-temperature angle-dispersive x-ray diffraction measurements on zircon-type ${\text{YPO}}_{4}$ and ${\text{ErPO}}_{4}$, and monazite-type ${\text{GdPO}}_{4}$, ${\text{EuPO}}_{4}$, ${\text{NdPO}}_{4}$, and ${\text{LaPO}}_{4}$ were performed in a diamond-anvil cell up to 30 GPa using neon as pressure-transmitting medium. In the zircon-structured oxides we found evidence of a reversible pressure-induced structural phase transformation from zircon to a monazite-type structure. The onset of the transition is at 19.7 GPa in ${\text{YPO}}_{4}$ and 17.3 GPa in ${\text{ErPO}}_{4}$. In ${\text{LaPO}}_{4}$ a nonreversible transition is found at 26.1 GPa and a barite-type structure is proposed for …
Subwavelength beams with polarization singularities in plasmonic metamaterials
2014
We investigated the diffraction behavior of plasmonic Bessel beams propagating in metal-dielectric stratified materials and wire media. Our results reveal various regimes in which polarization singularities are selectively maintained. This polarization-pass effect can be controlled by appropriately setting the filling factor of the metallic inclusions and its internal periodic distribution. These results may have implications in the development of devices at the nanoscale level for manipulation of polarization and angular momentum of cylindrical vector beams. This research was funded by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness under the project TEC2011-29120-C05-01.
Structure of Liquids
2014
An Introduction to the description of the static structure of simple liquids is given. The principle quantity, which describes this structure is the structure factor, which can be measured with neutron and X-ray diffraction. The structure factor is the Fourier transform of the radial pair distribution function, which describes the statistics of the atoms around a given one. Several theories are introduced for calculating this quantities. It is shown that the structure of liquid metals is dominated by their hardcore repulsion. In the low-wavenumber limit the structure factor is related to the compressibility of the liquid. In this limit deviations from the hard-core model become importent, w…
Distribution of Pholeter gastrophilus (Digenea) within the stomach of four odontocete species: the role of the diet and digestive physiology of hosts
2005
We compared the distribution of the digenean Pholeter gastrophilus in the stomach of 27 harbour porpoises, Phocoena phocoena, 27 striped dolphins, Stenella coeruleoalba, 18 bottlenose dolphins, Tursiops truncatus, and 100 long-finned pilot whales, Globicephala melas. The stomach of these species is composed of 4 chambers of different size, structure and function. In all species, P. gastrophilus was largely restricted to the glandular region of the stomach, but the parasite tended to favour the fundic chamber in bottlenose dolphins and harbour porpoises, the pyloric chamber in pilot whales, and none in striped dolphins. However, predictability at infrapopulation level was generally low, sugg…
