Effects of Acute Stress on the Oscillatory Activity of the Hippocampus–Amygdala–Prefrontal Cortex Network

2021

Displaying a stress response to threatening stimuli is essential for survival. These reactions must be adjusted to be adaptive. Otherwise, even mental illnesses may develop. Describing the physiological stress response may contribute to distinguishing the abnormal responses that accompany the pathology, which may help to improve the development of both diagnoses and treatments. Recent advances have elucidated many of the processes and structures involved in stress response management; however, there is still much to unravel regarding this phenomenon. The main aim of the present research is to characterize the response of three brain areas deeply involved in the stress response (i.e., to an …

Driving factors for having visibility of sustainability contents in university degree titles

2020

Abstract Given the increasing concern about sustainability issues in society, graduates and postgraduates going into the labour market benefit from the inclusion of sustainability contents in university studies. Visibility of these contents is gained towards a potential employer if they are explicitly mentioned in the university degree title. This is the first paper to explore this trend. More precisely, the purpose of this study is to find explanatory causal combinations of factors for this trend in the Spanish setting. The methodological approach of this paper is based on fuzzy sets. More precisely, it follows fuzzy-sets Qualitative Comparative Analysis, which is an innovative approach in…

Hospital Wastewater as a Reservoir for Antibiotic Resistance Genes: A Meta-Analysis

2020

Background: The emergence and dissemination of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in the environment poses a huge global health hazard. Hospital wastewater (HWW), in which a high density of antibiotic residues and antibiotic-resistant bacteria are present, may be a reservoir of ARGs dissemination into the environment. Our meta-analysis comprehensively analyzes the prevalence of ARGs in HWW, as well as the influencing factors in ARGs distribution. Methods: Online databases were used to search for literature using the subject terms: “Drug Resistance” AND “Genes” AND “Hospitals” AND “Wastewater.” Two reviewers independently applied predefined criteria to assess the literature and extract data …

Minimum effective dose for antidepressants - an obligatory requirement for antidepressant drug evaluation?

1996

Extensive clinical trials are required for registration and approval of new antidepressants in most countries including the requirement that a minimal effective dose should be determined. The rationale for this requirement is to avoid the use of unnecessarily high doses. The implication is that for every antidepressant, a dose exists that serves as a threshold, below which all doses are not effective or are clearly less effective in treating a major depressive episode. Dose titration and fixed dose studies are used to determine the minimal effective dose, but both strategies have limitations and often do not allow definite establishment of a clear-cut minimal effective dose. The effort of e…

Enhanced flexible algorithm for the optimization of slot filling factors in electrical machines †

2020

The continuous development in the field of industrial automation and electric mobility has led to the need for more efficient electrical machines with a high power density. The improvement of electrical machines’ slot filling factors is one of the measures to satisfy these requirements. In recent years, this topic has aroused greater interest in the industrial sector, since the evolution of the winding technological manufacturing processes allows an economically sustainable realization of ordered winding arrangements, rather than random ones. Moreover, the manufacture of electrical machines’ windings must be preceded by an accurate design phase in which it is possible to evaluate the maximu…

A software for the evaluation of winding factor harmonic distribution in high efficiency electrical motors and generators

2013

In this paper a software developed for the determination of winding connections, the calculation of winding factors and the evaluation of their harmonic distribution of three and two phase windings is presented by using as input data simply the number of slots, pole pairs and phases. The software is implemented as a function in MATLAB environment. By means of some examples, covering the most relevant winding types, the capabilities of this software will be shown. Particularly, integer and fractional single and double layer winding can be treated. Some examples are presented and briefly discussed. The connections, the winding factor harmonic distribution, the electro-motive force (e.m.f) THD…

Electrophoresis of model colloidal spheres in low salt aqueous suspension

2004

We report on comprehensive measurements of the electrophoretic mobility μ of a highly charged spherical colloid in deionized or low salt aqueous suspensions, where fluid and crystalline order develops with increased packing fraction Φ. We propose the existence of a 'universal' shape of the μ(Φ) showing three distinct regimes: a logarithmic increase, a plateau and a logarithmic decrease. The position and the height of the plateau are found to be influenced by the particle surface properties and the electrolyte concentration. In particular, it starts once the counter-ion concentration becomes equal to the concentration of background electrolyte. This coincides only loosely with the range of Φ…

Evidence for general cognitive ability (g ) in heterogeneous stock mice and an analysis of potential confounds

2002

The heterogeneous stock (HS) is a genetically outbred line of mice established more than 30 years ago from an 8-way cross of C57BL/6, BALB/c, RIII, AKR, DBA/2, I, A/J and C3H inbred mouse strains. The present study compared the performance of 40 HS mice across a battery of diverse cognitive tasks under a variety of motivations. Indices of emotionality were also included in order to assess their influence on performance. All measures of ability loaded positively on an unrotated first principal component that accounted for 31% of the variance, suggesting the presence of a common factor of general cognitive ability (g) underlying all tasks. A first factor derived from anxiety indices correlate…

IDENTIFYING FACTORS INFLUENCING SCHOOL LEADERSHIP PRACTICES: CASE STUDY OF LATVIA

2020

Based on the analysis of research literature and empirical data, the study aims to identify significant factors affecting school leadership practices in Latvia. In addition to studies of scientific literature, the authors used qualitative research methods – in-depth interviews with 7 school leadership teams of the same municipality and expert focus group discussion to describe the influencing factors that are relevenat in the context of Latvia. As a result of the study, the authors identified that school leaders’ work experience, beliefs and mental models, social skills and impact of the external parties have an influence on their practices.
