A dynamical calibration of the mass–luminosity relation at very low stellar masses and young ages

Mass is the most fundamental parameter of a star, yet it is also one of the most difficult to measure directly. In general, astronomers estimate stellar masses by determining the luminosity and using the 'mass-luminosity' relationship, but this relationship has never been accurately calibrated for young, low-mass stars and brown dwarfs. Masses for these low-mass objects are therefore constrained only by theoretical models. NGC1600 - Cluster or Field Elliptical?

A study of the galaxy distribution in the field of the elliptical galaxy NGC1600 has been undertaken. Although this galaxy is often classified as a member of a loose group, all the neighbouring galaxies are much fainter and could be taken as satellites of NGC1600. The number density profile of galaxies in the field of this galaxy shows a decline with radius, with evidence of a background at approximately 1.3 Mpc. The density and number density profile are consistent with that found for other isolated early-type galaxies. Long term X-ray spectral variability of the nucleus of M81

We have analysed the soft X-ray emission from the nuclear source of the nearby spiral galaxy M81, using the available data collected with ROSAT, ASCA, BeppoSAX and Chandra. The source flux is highly variable, showing (sometimes dramatic: a factor of 4 in 20 days) variability at different timescales, from 2 days to 4 years, and in particular a steady increase of the flux by a factor of >~ 2 over 4 years, broken by rapid flares. After accounting for the extended component resolved by Chandra, the nuclear soft X-ray spectrum (from ROSAT/PSPC, BeppoSAX/LECS and Chandra data) cannot be fitted well with a single absorbed power-law model. ChandraX‐Ray Observation of the Orion Nebula Cluster. I. Detection, Identification, and Determination of X‐Ray Luminosities

In this first of two companion papers on the Orion Nebula Cluster (ONC), we present our analysis of a 63 Ksec Chandra HRC-I observation that yielded 742 X-ray detections within the 30'x30' field of view. To facilitate our interpretation of the X-ray image, here we collect a multi-wavelength catalog of nearly 2900 known objects in the region by combining 17 different catalogs from the recent literature. We define two reference groups: an infrared sample, containing all objects detected in the K band, and an optical sample comprising low extinction, well characterized ONC members. The morphological types of galaxies in the Local Supercluster

AbstractOn the basis of the Hyper – Leda Catalogue HyperLeda 8293 galaxies with heliocentric radial velocities below 2500 km s-1 were selected; 4570 had known morphological types (4366 had calculated b/a ratio). We checked the frequency of the distribution of various types in the LSC, finding spirals and irregulars most numerous, in accordance with expectations. The axial ratio of galaxy diameters of various types was studied, and the dependence of this parameter on the morphological type was noted.

In-Flight Calibrations of UFFO-Pathfinder

The Ultra-Fast Flash Observatory (UFFO), which will be launched onboard the Lomonosov spacecraft, contains two crucial instruments: UFFO Burst Alert & Trigger Telescope (UBAT) for detection and localization of Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) and the fast-response Slewing Mirror Telescope (SMT) designed for the observation of the prompt optical/UV counterparts. Here we discuss the in-space calibrations of the UBAT detector and SMT telescope. After the launch, the observations of the standard X-ray sources such as pulsar in Crab nebula will provide data for necessary calibrations of UBAT. Testing the companion hypothesis for the origin of the X-ray emission from intermediate-mass main-sequence stars

There is no straightforward explanation for intrinsic X-ray emission from intermediate-mass main-sequence stars. Therefore the observed emission is often interpreted in terms of (hypothesized) late-type magnetically active companion stars. We use Chandra imaging observations to spatially resolve in X-rays a sample of main-sequence B-type stars with recently discovered companions at arcsecond separation. We find that all spatially resolved companions are X-ray emitters, but seven out of eleven intermediate-mass stars are also X-ray sources. If this emission is interpreted in terms of additional sub-arcsecond or spectroscopic companions, this implies a high multiplicity of B-type stars. Firm …

VLBI-selected sample of Compact Symmetric Object candidates and frequency-dependent position of hotspots

The Compact Symmetric Objects (CSOs) are small (<1 kiloparsec) and powerful extragalactic radio sources showing emission on both sides of an active galactic nucleus and no signs of strong relativistic beaming. They may be young radio sources, progenitors of large FRII radio galaxies. We aim to study the statistical properties of CSOs by constructing and investigating a new large sample of CSO candidates on the basis of dual-frequency, parsec-scale morphology.
