Physical Parameters in Relativistic Jets from Compact Symmetric Objects

Compact symmetric objects (CSOs) conform a class of sources characterized by high luminosity radio emission located symmetrically on both sides of the active galactic nucleus on linear scales of less than 1 kpc. Given their small size, the hot spots of the jets in CSOs provide a unique laboratory for the study of the physics of relativistic jets and their environment close to the central engine. We present a simple model for the hot spots in CSOs assuming synchrotron emission, minimum energy and ram-pressure equilibrium with the external medium. Optical pulsations from a transitional millisecond pulsar

Weakly magnetic, millisecond spinning neutron stars attain their very fast rotation through a 1E8-1E9 yr long phase during which they undergo disk-accretion of matter from a low mass companion star. They can be detected as accretion-powered millisecond X-ray pulsars if towards the end of this phase their magnetic field is still strong enough to channel the accreting matter towards the magnetic poles. When mass transfer is much reduced or ceases altogether, pulsed emission generated by particle acceleration in the magnetosphere and powered by the rotation of the neutron star is observed, preferentially in the radio and gamma-ray bands. Abstract In this paper we prove that the problem of deciding whether a deterministic rational relation is star-free is recursively solvable, although the same problem for any rational relation is undecidable. We also prove that a rational relation is star-free if and only if it is aperiodic and deterministic.
The KeV Majoron as a dark matter particle

We consider a very weakly interacting KeV majoron as dark matter particle (DMP), which provides both the critical density $\rho_{cr} = 1.88 \times 10^{-29} h^{2}$ $g/cm^{3}$ and the galactic scale $M_{gal}$ $\sim m^{3}_{Pl}/m^{2}_{J} \sim 10^{12} M_{\odot} (m_{J}/1 KeV)^{-2}$ for galaxy formation. The majoron couples to leptons only through some new "directly interacting particles", called DIPS, and this provides the required smallness of the coupling constants. If the masses of these DIPS are greater than the scale $V_s$ characterizing the spontaneous violation of the global lepton symmetry they are absent at the corresponding phase transition ($T \sim V_s$) and the majorons are produced d…
Combination of measurements of the top-quark pair production cross section from the Tevatron Collider

We combine six measurements of the inclusive top-quark pair (tt̄) production cross section (σtt̄) from data collected with the CDF and D0 detectors at the Fermilab Tevatron with proton-antiproton collisions at s=1.96TeV. The data correspond to integrated luminosities of up to 8.8fb-1. We obtain a value of σtt̄=7.60±0.41pb for a top-quark mass of mt=172.5GeV. The contributions to the uncertainty are 0.20 pb from statistical sources, 0.29 pb from systematic sources, and 0.21 pb from the uncertainty on the integrated luminosity. The result is in good agreement with the standard model expectation of 7.35-0.33+0.28pb at next-to-next-to-leading order and next-to-next-to leading logarithms in pert…
Cross-section-constrained top-quark mass measurement from dilepton events at the tevatron

We report the first top quark mass measurement that uses a cross section constraint to improve the mass determination. This measurement is made with a dilepton $t\bar{t}$ event sample collected with the CDF II detector. From a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.2 fb$^{-1}$, we measure a top quark mass of $\rm{170.7^{+4.2}_{-3.9}(stat)\pm2.6(syst)}$ $\rm{\pm2.4(theory) GeV/{\it{c}}^{2}}$. The measurement without the cross section constraint results in a top quark mass of $\rm{169.7^{+5.2}_{-4.9}(stat)\pm3.1(syst) GeV/{\it{c}}^{2}}$.
Measurement of the charge asymmetry in top quark pair production in pp collisions at root s=7 TeV using the ATLAS detector

A measurement of the top-antitop production charge asymmetry A[subscript C] is presented using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.04 fb[superscript −1] of pp collisions at s√=7 TeV collected by the ATLAS detector at the LHC. Events are selected with a single lepton (electron or muon), missing transverse momentum and at least four jets of which at least one jet is identified as coming from a b-quark. A kinematic fit is used to reconstruct the t[bar over t] event topology. After background subtraction, a Bayesian unfolding procedure is performed to correct for acceptance and detector effects. Vertical grid refinement for stratocumulus clouds in the radiation scheme of a global climate model

Abstract. In this study, we implement a vertical grid refinement scheme in the radiation routine of the global aerosol-climate model ECHAM-HAM, aiming to improve the representation of stratocumulus clouds and address the underestimation of their cloud cover. The scheme is based on a reconstruction of the temperature inversion as a physical constraint for the cloud top. On the refined grid, the boundary layer and the free troposphere are separated and the cloud's layer is made thinner. The cloud cover is re-calculated either by conserving the cloud volume (SC-VOLUME) or by using the Sundqvist cloud cover routine on the new grid representation (SC-SUND). Most ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) are believed to be stellar mass black holes or neutron stars accreting beyond the Eddington limit. Determining the nature of the compact object and the accretion mode from broadband spectroscopy is currently a challenge, but the observed timing properties provide insight into the compact object and details of the geometry and accretion processes. Here we report a timing analysis for an 800 ks XMM-Newton campaign on the supersoft ultraluminous X-ray source, NGC 247 ULX-1.
